1. Free yourself
He went to work for his father's company, originally called Semler & Company, then a mixer and agitator supplier in São Paulo.
2. Manage the issue of ego
He clashed with his father, who supported a traditional autocratic style of management whereas young Semler favoured a decentralised style.
3. Find your definition of success
His father resigned as CEO and vested majority ownership in his son in 1980 when Ricardo was 21 years old.
4. Share as you go
On his first day as CEO, Ricardo Semler fired sixty percent of all top managers.

As of 2003, Semco had annual revenue of $212 million, and it employed 3,000 workers, as opposed to 90 in 1982.

The Caring Capitalist (2005): Some call it anarchic socialism, some cutting edge capitalism. At Brazilian manufacturer Semco, the workers have sacked the boss, and run the company themselves.

At the lavish reception, one of two receptionists meet and greet the great and mighty. But no-one really ever knows which one it will be at any given time. "'We are not sure which one will be there, because they set their own schedule" explains IT worker boss Joao Neto. There are hammocks to help workers think in comfort, and departments can choose their own furniture. Even salaries are set by the employees themselves, and bosses are just as likely to tell you to ask for more money than less. But although it sounds like a workers dream, the rest of the department keeps an eagle eye on lazy employees: "There is peer pressure for bad behaviour. If you're here just to profit from other people's efforts, you're not wanted". The easy going atmosphere has paid dividends -- annual profits at Semco are up to US$ 160m these days, from $ 4m when owner Ricardo Semler took over 25 years ago. Now he has turned his attention to teaching -- without the teachers. Like Semco, pupils at Lumiar primary school in Sao Paulo dictate the rules. Vive La Revolucion?

Ricardo Semler (born 1959 in São Paulo) is the CEO and majority owner of Semco Partners, a Brazilian company best known for its radical form of industrial democracy and corporate re-engineering. Under his ownership, revenue has grown from 4 million US dollars in 1982 to 212 million US dollars in 2003 and his innovative business management policies have attracted widespread interest around the world. Time featured him among its Global 100 young leaders profile series published in 1994 while the World Economic Forum also nominated him. The Wall Street Journal America Economia, The Wall Street Journal's Latin American magazine, named him Latin American businessman of the year in 1990 and he was named Brazilian businessman of the year in 1990 and 1992. Virando a Própria Mesa ("Turning Your Own Table"), his first book, became the best selling non-fiction book in the history of Brazil. He has since written two books in English on the transformation of Semco and workplace re-engineering: Maverick, an English version of "Turning Your Own Table" published in 1993 and an international bestseller, and The Seven Day Weekend in 2003.

He went to work for his father's company, originally called Semler & Company, then a mixer and agitator supplier in São Paulo.
2. Manage the issue of ego
He clashed with his father, who supported a traditional autocratic style of management whereas young Semler favoured a decentralised style.
3. Find your definition of success
His father resigned as CEO and vested majority ownership in his son in 1980 when Ricardo was 21 years old.
4. Share as you go
On his first day as CEO, Ricardo Semler fired sixty percent of all top managers.
5. Let go of the past
As of 2003, Semco had annual revenue of $212 million, and it employed 3,000 workers, as opposed to 90 in 1982.
6. Do the things that interest you
He was named Brazilian businessman of the year in 1990 and in 1992.
7. Have the courage now
The World Economic Forum named him as one of the Global Leaders of Tomorrow.
8. Give up control
He wrote a book Maverick on his experience at Semco which became a worldwide bestseller in 1993.
9. Know your limitations
He has been Vice President of the Federation of Industries of Brazil.
10. Ask three whys in a row
He founded the Lumiar School, a democratic school where children from 0 to 14 years old engage in projects of their interest.

The Caring Capitalist (2005): Some call it anarchic socialism, some cutting edge capitalism. At Brazilian manufacturer Semco, the workers have sacked the boss, and run the company themselves.

At the lavish reception, one of two receptionists meet and greet the great and mighty. But no-one really ever knows which one it will be at any given time. "'We are not sure which one will be there, because they set their own schedule" explains IT worker boss Joao Neto. There are hammocks to help workers think in comfort, and departments can choose their own furniture. Even salaries are set by the employees themselves, and bosses are just as likely to tell you to ask for more money than less. But although it sounds like a workers dream, the rest of the department keeps an eagle eye on lazy employees: "There is peer pressure for bad behaviour. If you're here just to profit from other people's efforts, you're not wanted". The easy going atmosphere has paid dividends -- annual profits at Semco are up to US$ 160m these days, from $ 4m when owner Ricardo Semler took over 25 years ago. Now he has turned his attention to teaching -- without the teachers. Like Semco, pupils at Lumiar primary school in Sao Paulo dictate the rules. Vive La Revolucion?

He went to work for his father's company, originally called Semler & Company, then a mixer and agitator supplier in São Paulo.
2. Manage the issue of ego
He clashed with his father, who supported a traditional autocratic style of management whereas young Semler favoured a decentralised style.
3. Find your definition of success
His father resigned as CEO and vested majority ownership in his son in 1980 when Ricardo was 21 years old.
4. Share as you go
On his first day as CEO, Ricardo Semler fired sixty percent of all top managers.
5. Let go of the past
As of 2003, Semco had annual revenue of $212 million, and it employed 3,000 workers, as opposed to 90 in 1982.
6. Do the things that interest you
He was named Brazilian businessman of the year in 1990 and in 1992.
7. Have the courage now
The World Economic Forum named him as one of the Global Leaders of Tomorrow.
8. Give up control
He wrote a book Maverick on his experience at Semco which became a worldwide bestseller in 1993.
9. Know your limitations
He has been Vice President of the Federation of Industries of Brazil.
10. Ask three whys in a row
He founded the Lumiar School, a democratic school where children from 0 to 14 years old engage in projects of their interest.

At the lavish reception, one of two receptionists meet and greet the great and mighty. But no-one really ever knows which one it will be at any given time. "'We are not sure which one will be there, because they set their own schedule" explains IT worker boss Joao Neto. There are hammocks to help workers think in comfort, and departments can choose their own furniture. Even salaries are set by the employees themselves, and bosses are just as likely to tell you to ask for more money than less. But although it sounds like a workers dream, the rest of the department keeps an eagle eye on lazy employees: "There is peer pressure for bad behaviour. If you're here just to profit from other people's efforts, you're not wanted". The easy going atmosphere has paid dividends -- annual profits at Semco are up to US$ 160m these days, from $ 4m when owner Ricardo Semler took over 25 years ago. Now he has turned his attention to teaching -- without the teachers. Like Semco, pupils at Lumiar primary school in Sao Paulo dictate the rules. Vive La Revolucion?
