March 9 -- Today’s dairy farm is a far cry from what ads and movies would have you believe. Cows go to robotic milking stations on their own, where they are identified, milked, and sent back out to the barn until the next milking. They are even fed by a Volkswagen-sized robot called the Vector. All this means a dairy farm of 200 cows can be easily run by four people. Bloomberg's Sam Grobart visited Sunny Glade Farm in Canada where robots handle most of the work and the cows like it just fine. (Video by: Brandon Lisy and Justin Beach)

The machinery and equipment required depends on the level of mechanization desired and the scale of operation. However, some machinery and equipments are essentially required such as the chaff cutter machine, milking pails, milk cans and minor implements. On farms maintaining more than 20 milch animals, machine milking may be economical and more convenient as compared to hand milking. Installation of fans and mistess cooling devices in animal sheds for protection against heat stress is also a must if one wishes to keep high yielding crossbred cows. Dairy farms with 50 or more milch animals may also require a milk cooler, electricity generator set and a utility vehicle for the procurement of farm supplies and marketing of produce besides a tractor with implements for the cultivation of fodder crops and their harvesting, transportation chaffing, processing etc.

Dairy farming is a class of agricultural, or an animal husbandry, enterprise, for long-term production of milk, usually from dairy cows but also from goats and sheep, which may be either processed on-site or transported to a dairy factory for processing and eventual retail sale.
Most dairy farms sell the male calves born by their cows, usually for veal production, or breeding depending on quality of the bull calf, rather than raising non-milk-producing stock.[citation needed] Many dairy farms also grow their own feed, typically including corn, and hay. This is fed directly to the cows, or is stored as silage for use during the winter season.
Dairy farming has been part of agriculture for thousands of years. Historically it has been one part of small, diverse farms. In the last century or so larger farms doing only dairy production have emerged. Large scale dairy farming is only viable where either a large amount of milk is required for production of more durable dairy products such as cheese, butter, etc. or there is a substantial market of people with cash to buy milk, but no cows of their own.
