A torch is a fire source, usually a rod-shaped piece of wood with a rag soaked in pitch and/or some other flammable material wrapped around one end. Torches were often supported in sconces by brackets high up on walls, to throw light over corridors in stone structures such as castles or crypts. This traditional use of the word lives on in the Olympic Torch, procession torches and the like.
A torch carried in relay by cross-country runners is used to light the Olympic flame which burns without interruption until the end of the Games. These torches and relay tradition were introduced in 1936 Summer Olympics by Carl Diem, the chairman of the event because during the duration of the Ancient Olympic Games in Olympia, a sacred flame burns inside of the temple of Hera, kept in custody by her priestess.
If a torch is made of sulfur mixed with lime, the fire will not diminish after being plunged into water. Such torches were used by the ancient Romans.
Procession torches are made from coarse hessian rolled into a tube and soaked in wax. There is usually a wooden handle and a cardboard collar to deflect any wax droplets. They are an easy, safe and relatively cheap way to hold a flame aloft in a parade, or to provide illumination in any after-dark celebration.

Plot: April's Shower is a comedy about love, romance and expectation. The story follows unpredictable twists and turns until it climaxes with a madcap finale. According to Ipaam, the agency which oversees the uses of wild animals, the jaguar’s participation in the event was illegal. “No request was made to authorize the participation of the jaguar “Juma” in the event of the Olympic torch,” Ipaam announced in a statement.
The incident is currently under investigation by Ipaam.
A joyful yellow jaguar named Ginga is the Brazillian Olympic team’s mascot.

Animal rights groups have condemned the killing, with some questioning why the animal was involved in the Olympic event.
"When will we learn? Wild animals held captive and forced to do things that are frightening, sometimes painful, and always unnatural are ticking time bombs," Brittany Peet, director of captive animal law enforcement at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals , said in a statement.
The animal called Juma was being kept at a zoo attached to a military jungle training camp.
It was rescued as a cub by soldiers after its mother died in the jungle and was brought up at the camp, the military said.
Jaguars seized from hunters are sometimes kept as mascots by jungle battalions and shown at military parades.

Rio 2016: Jaguar in Amazon torch relay shot dead.
The female jaguar escaped its handlers after the ceremony on Monday and attacked a soldier, a spokesman said.
Four tranquiliser darts failed to stop it and a soldier shot it with a pistol.
Organisers for the Rio Games said it had been a mistake to exhibit the Olympic torch next to a chained wild animal.
University of Brasilia animal behaviour scientist Joao Paulo Castro told "Youtube Channel Up & Top" that it was likely the animal escaped because it got stressed during the relay.
