STORYLINE:
The Luxor balloon tragedy raised concerns of another blow to the Egypt's vital tourism industry, decimated by two years of unrest since the 2011 revolution that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.
The southern city of Luxor has been hit hard, with vacant hotel rooms and empty cruise ships.
19 people were killed on Tuesday in what appeared to be the deadliest hot air ballooning accident on record. A British tourist and the Egyptian pilot, who was badly burned, were the sole survivors.
The crash added to the woes for residents of Luxor.
Scared off by the turmoil and tenuous security following the uprising, the number of tourists coming to Egypt fell to 9.8 million in 2011 from 14.7 million the year before, and revenues plunged 30 percent to 8.8 billion US dollars.
Last year saw a slight rise, but most tourists go to the beach resorts of the Red Sea, staying away from Nile Valley sites like Luxor.

While many Americans view Iran as a shadowy and perhaps even dangerous place to travel, others see the opportunity for a vacation. Officials in Iran have heralded the maiden voyage of the first private passenger train to travel from Europe to the Islamic Republic as part of a wider tourism boom in the country. However, with tickets going for as much as $40,000 per head it's unclear how many tourists will take to the tracks. Operators of the luxury tourist train — majestically named the Golden Eagle Danube Express — said they were surprised to discover the most common nationality among their passengers was American.

"That is, of course, highly regrettable. I think everything needs be done in order to clarify exactly what happened. I hope it will not have any sort of impact the upon overall policy that we are conducting in Afghanistan, because that has to decided out of other considerations, needless to say."

STORYLINE:
Pakistan's Foreign Minister strongly condemned Sunday's shooting of 16 Afghan civilians in the southern province of Kandahar, which was allegedly carried out by a US Army staff sergeant.
"The people who are responsible for that - or the person who's responsible for that - must be brought to justice," Hina Rabbani said at a news conference on Wednesday.
Rabbani made the comments after a meeting with Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt.
Bildt echoed his counterpart's concerns, but emphasised the importance of continued international assistance in Afghanistan.
"I hope it will not have any sort of impact the upon overall policy that we are conducting in Afghanistan, because that has to decided out of other considerations, needless to say," Bildt told reporters.
US authorities stated on Tuesday they had recovered surveillance footage they say proves only one perpetrator was involved in the shootings, which have further strained already shaky relations between the US and Afghanistan.
The incident has seemingly escalated Afghan violence in recent days.
A delegation investigating the shootings was meeting in the southern city of Kandahar on Wednesday when a bomb hidden in a motorcycle exploded about 600 yards (metres) away.
The blast killed one Afghan intelligence official and wounded three other people, but the delegation members were unharmed.
Rabbani also discussed other issues with Bildt on Wednesday, including the proposed Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline.
The pipeline, which is designed to deliver natural gas from Iran to Pakistan, has been strongly opposed by the US, who believes Iran is close to developing nuclear weapons.
"We have repeatedly said that we can not afford to be selective in pursuing energy sources and we will continue to pursue whatever we consider to be in our national interest," Rabbani told media on Wednesday.
