The Fan is a district of Richmond, Virginia, so named because of the "fan" shape of the array of streets that extend west from Belvidere Street, on the eastern edge of Monroe Park, westward to the Boulevard. (Though the streets rapidly resemble a grid after moving through what is now Virginia Commonwealth University). The Fan is one of the easterly points of the city's West End section, and is bordered to the north by Broad Street and to the south by VA 195, although the Fan District Association considers the southern border to be the properties abutting the south side of Main Street. The western side is sometimes called the Upper Fan and the eastern side the Lower Fan, though confusingly the Uptown district is located near VCU in the Lower Fan. Many cafes and locally owned restaurants are located here, as well as historic Monument Avenue, a boulevard featuring enormous equine statuary of Civil War Confederate generals and a statue of tennis icon Arthur Ashe. Development of the Fan district was strongly influenced by the City Beautiful movement of the late 19th century.
A district is a type of administrative division that, in some countries, is managed by local government. Across the world, areas known as "districts" vary greatly in size, spanning entire regions or counties, several municipalities, subdivisions of municipalities, school district, or political district.
In Afghanistan, a district (Persian / Pashto: ولسوالۍ Wuleswali) is a subdivision of a province. There are almost 400 districts in the country.
Electoral districts are used in state elections. Districts were also used in several states as cadastral units for land titles. Some were used as squatting districts. New South Wales had several different types of districts used in the 21st century.
In Austria, a district (Bezirk) is an administrative division normally encompassing several municipalities, roughly equivalent to the Landkreis in Germany. The administrative office of a district, the Bezirkshauptmannschaft, is headed by a Bezirkshauptmann. It is in charge of the administration of all matters of federal and state administrative law and subject to orders from the higher instances, usually the Landeshauptmann (governor) in matters of federal law and the Landesregierung (state government) in state law. While there are matters of administrative law the municipalities themselves are in charge of, or where there are special bodies, the district is the basic unit of general administration in Austria. Officials on the district level are not elected, but appointed by the state government. There are also independent cities in Austria. They are called Statutarstadt in Austrian administrative law. These urban districts do have the same tasks as a normal district.

VCU was founded in 1838 as the medical department of Hampden–Sydney College, becoming the Medical College of Virginia in 1854. In 1968, the Virginia General Assembly merged MCV with the Richmond Professional Institute, founded in 1917, to create Virginia Commonwealth University. Today, more than 31,000 students pursue 226 degree and certificate programs through VCU's 13 schools and one college. VCU's athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are collectively known as the VCU Rams. They are members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The VCU campus includes historic buildings such as the Ginter House, now used by the school's provost.
District 9 is a 2009 science fiction thriller film directed by Neill Blomkamp, written by Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell, and produced by Peter Jackson and Carolynne Cunningham. The film stars Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope, and David James. The film won the 2010 Saturn Award for Best International Film presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, and was nominated for four Academy Awards in 2009: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Visual Effects, and Best Editing.
The story, adapted from Alive in Joburg, a 2005 short film directed by Blomkamp and produced by Sharlto Copley and Simon Hansen, depicts humanity, xenophobia, and social segregation. The title and premise of District 9 were inspired by events in District Six, Cape Town during the apartheid era. The film was produced for US$30 million and shot on location in Chiawelo, Soweto, presenting fictional interviews, news footage, and video from surveillance cameras in a found footage format. A viral marketing campaign began in 2008, at the San Diego Comic-Con, while the theatrical trailer appeared in July 2009. Released by TriStar Pictures, the film opened on August 14, 2009, in North America and earned US$37 million in its opening weekend.

A short video inspired by the film District 9, by Neil Blomkamp and Peter Jackson. This is not part of the film, it is a fan video. I am a visual effects artist and really liked the visual effects of the film, so I took it upon myself to recreate one of the shots from the film, and this is the product of that endeavor.

Travel video about destination Kutna Hora in the Czech Republic. Kutna Hora is situated close to Prague and historically is one of the most important cities in the Czech Republic. In the Early Middle Ages the city gained its wealth from the mining of silver ore. In its heyday in the fourteenth century, the city had a population of around a hundred thousand and each year ten thousand miners extracted three million kilograms of silver from seven hundred metres below ground, which was equal to one third of the mined silver in the ancient world. In 1142 a Cistercian monastery was founded in today's Sedlec district along with the adjoining Gothic church of St. Mary, an imposing building with five naves and seven choir chapels. Following the demolition of the church by the Hussites in 1421, it...
Travel video about destination Yazd in Iran. The ancient desert city of Yazd is located within the centre of the State Of Iran and is one of the country’s oldest cities, set like a string of pearls along the Kavir coast. It is also a centre for the followers of the Zarathustra faith, the pious predecessors of Islam who fled to the city to escape Arab persecution. A small square is situated in the middle of the Old Town district of Fahadan, flanked by historic buildings such as a prison where, according to legend, Alexander The Great held captive various Achaemenid dignitaries and which was later used as a school. The narrow streets of the historic Old Town mainly consist of mud-built buildings with partially covered corridors, domes and numerous wind towers. The maze of narrow streets in ...
