The 48th Fighter Wing (48 FW) is part of the United States Air Force's Third Air Force, assigned to Headquarters Air Command Europe, and is based at RAF Lakenheath, England. The 48 FW is the only F-15 wing based in Europe. It was given the name "Statue of Liberty Wing" on 4 July 1954 and remains the only U.S. Air Force unit with both a name and a numerical designation.
The 48 FW operates in support of United States Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa, United States European Command and NATO.
The Liberty Wing has nearly 5,700 active-duty military members, 2,000 British and U.S. civilians, and includes a geographically separated unit at nearby RAF Feltwell. In addition to supporting two squadrons of F-15E Strike Eagle and one squadron of F-15C Eagle fighter aircraft, the Liberty Wing is responsible for the 56th Rescue Squadron's HH-60G Pave Hawk Combat Search and Rescue helicopters.
A wing is a type of fin with a surface that produces aerodynamic forces facilitating movement through air and other gases, or water and other liquids. As such, wings have an airfoil shape, a streamlined cross-sectional shape producing lift.
The word "wing" from the Old Norse vængr for many centuries referred mainly to the foremost limbs of birds (in addition to the architectural aisle.) But in recent centuries the word's meaning has extended to include lift producing appendages of insects, bats, pterosaurs, boomerangs, some sail boats and aircraft, or the inverted airfoil on a race car that generates a downward force to increase traction.
Various species of penguins and other flighted or flightless water birds such as auks, cormorants, guillemots, shearwaters, eider and scoter ducks and diving petrels are avid swimmers, and use their wings to propel through water.
A wing's aerodynamic quality is expressed as its lift-to-drag ratio. The lift a wing generates at a given speed and angle of attack can be one to two orders of magnitude greater than the total drag on the wing. A high lift-to-drag ratio requires a significantly smaller thrust to propel the wings through the air at sufficient lift.

Royal Air Force Lakenheath or RAF Lakenheath (IATA: LKZ, ICAO: EGUL) is a Royal Air Force station near the town of Lakenheath in Suffolk, England located 4.7 miles (7.6 km) north-east of Mildenhall, Suffolk and 8.3 miles (13.4 km) west of Thetford, Norfolk.
Although an RAF station, it hosts United States Air Force units and personnel. The host wing is the 48th Fighter Wing (48 FW), also known as the Liberty Wing, assigned to United States Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA).
The 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath is the Statue of Liberty Wing, the only USAF wing with both a number and a name. Since activation at Chaumont-Semoutiers Air Base, France, on 10 July 1952, Liberty Wing has been one of the premier fighter wings of the United States Air Forces in Europe, spending over 50 years as part of USAFE. The 48 FW has nearly 5,700 active-duty military members, 2,000 British and U.S. civilians, and includes a Geographically Separate Unit (GSU) at nearby RAF Feltwell.

RAF Lakenheath is home to the 48th Fighter Wing, also known as the Liberty Wing. In addition to supporting three combat-ready squadrons of F-15E Strike Eagle and F-15C Eagle fighter aircraft, the Liberty Wing houses the 56th Rescue Squadron's HH-60G Combat Search and Rescue helicopters. Historically, the 48th FW has been the foundation of U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s combat capability and remains so today. The Liberty Wing led the El Dorado Canyon raids into Libya in 1986 and was the first F-111 fighter unit to deploy to the Gulf during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The wing also anchored NATO forces during Operations Deliberate Force and Allied Force. Since Sept. 11, 2001, the 48th FW has played a key role in antiterrorism operations, flying combat missions and providing co...

As a change from railway videos, this is a short video of aircraft action at Lakenheath. This airbase is the home of the USAF 48th Fighter Wing (The Liberty Wing) and has F15-E and F15-C aircraft. There are occasional visits by C130 Hercules although most transports use the nearby Mildenhall Field. By good fortune, the wind was north-easterly on this occasion so the aircraft were taking off in this direction. It was a strong wind however, so I do apologise for a bit of camera shake and wind noise. My video, regretably cannot include the distinctive aroma of burnt kerosene, but I hope you enjoy the sight and sound of these fine aircraft.
At RAF Lakenheath, deploying is a regular part of life for those leaving, and for those left behind. But the routine of deployment doesn't make the homecoming any less sweet. Senior Airman Amanda Wowk has more.

"RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk is the largest USAF base in the UK with the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing in residence. Their big two day airshow always attracts something special. 1992 was no exception with rare displays from a USAF ' Wild Weasel' Phantom, dramatic 2 ship flying by French Jaguars and Mirage IIIs, no less than 6 of The Fighter Collection's veteran warbirds including the P38 Lightning and last but not least an impressive tactical attack by the home team's FIII's and F15E's. An RAF Phantom in one of its last ever displays gave as spirited a performance as the Jet Provost's was polished and good weather on both days made for some thrilling material all round."
