Ashley Nichole Simmons[2] (born February 5, 1986), is an American professional wrestler working for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) as Madison Rayne. She is a former three–time TNA Women's Knockout Champion and a two-time TNA Knockouts Tag Team Champion.
Simmons began her wrestling career on the independent circuit wrestling under the monikers Ashley Lane and Lexi Lane. She joined the all-female promotion Shimmer Women Athletes in 2007, where she was one half of the first-ever Shimmer Tag Team Champions with partner Nevaeh. In 2009, she joined TNA, aligning herself with Angelina Love and Velvet Sky as part of The Beautiful People. In March 2010, she, along Lacey Von Erich and Velvet Sky won the TNA Knockouts Tag Team Championship, with the three defending the title under the Freebird rule and becoming the longest reigning champions in the title's history. In April 2010 at Lockdown, she won her first TNA Women's Knockout Championship, a title she has held a total of three times. In addition, she was the first Knockout to hold both titles simultaneously, She also made appearances in Wrestlicious as Amber Lively.
Simmons grew up in West Lafayette, Ohio,[3] with her two older brothers.[7] During high school, Simmons was the Homecoming Queen and a varsity cheerleader, and she ran track and was a member of the drama club, as well.[1][2][8]
After high school, Simmons began training for fitness competitions, although she never entered any.[7] Initially she studied Radiology at college part time while working on the independent circuit.[1] She left college to pursue a wrestling career.[7] At the time she left school, Simmons had a 4.0 GPA.[7]
Simmons first got her start in professional wrestling shortly after graduating from high school.[1] She saw a poster for a local independent promotion, contacted the promoter, and began training a short time later under the name Lexi Lane.[1] After completing her training under Jeff Cannon, she started her wrestling career in the state of Ohio.[5] Her first match was in her former high school and was refereed by female wrestler Ivory.[5] In October 2006, she competed in World Xtreme Wrestling's Elite 8 Tournament.[2] Lane also competed in Ohio Championship Wrestling (OCW), where she became the promotion's first ever OCW Women's Champion in March 2007.[2] She lost the title in November, regained it in May 2008, and lost it to Sara Del Rey in February 2009.[2] In Ohio, Lane wrestled Nevaeh in several promotions as part of a scripted rivalry between the two.[5]
On October 13, 2007, she made her debut in Shimmer Women Athletes as Ashley Lane.[2][9] On the taping of Volume 15 of their DVD series, she teamed with Lorelei Lee in a losing effort to Portia Perez and Nicole Matthews.[9] On Volume 16, she lost to Alexa Thatcher.[9]
Lane then began teaming with Nevaeh, and they made their team debut in losing to The Experience (Lexie Fyfe and Malia Hosaka) on the Volume 17 taping, then scoring a win against The Minnesota Homewrecking Crew (Lacey and Rain) on Volume 18.[5] They beat the duo of Veronika Vice and Cat Power on Volume 19,[5] and then lost to The International Home Wrecking Crew (Rain and Jetta) on Volume 20.[9] On October 19, Lane and Nevaeh emerged victorious from a six-team tag team gauntlet match to crown the first Shimmer Tag Team Champions.[9] Later in the evening, they successfully defended the belts against The Canadian NINJAs (Portia Perez and Nicole Matthews).[9] At Volume 26 on May 3, 2009, Lane and Nevaeh lost the Shimmer Tag Team Championship to The NINJAs.[2][9]
On April 19, 2008, Lane appeared in Shimmer's sister promotion Ring of Honor, competing in a Four Corner Survival match against Daizee Haze, Lacey, and MsChif.[4] Lane made a second appearance at Southern Hostility on December 6 in a match against Haze, Sara Del Rey, and Serena Deeb.[4]
On October 1, 2011, Lane returned to Shimmer as fan favorite, calling out former partner Nevaeh for turning on MsChif and Jessie McKay during a tag team match. Nevaeh in turn claimed that Lane had turned her back on Shimmer by leaving the promotion in 2009, which led to a brawl between the two. Later in the same event, Nevaeh defeated Lane in her return match.[10] The following day Lane teamed with Mia Yim in a losing effort against the team of Nevaeh and Sassy Stephie.[11]
In 2009, Lane took part in the first season tapings of Wrestlicious, which began airing on television in March 2010. In the promotion, she played in the role of "Cheerleader" Amber Lively.[12] She debuted in the third episode of Takedown (aired on March 17), teaming with Lacey Von Erich and winning by disqualification against the team of Draculetta and White Magic.[13]
On August 20, 2009, Rayne was kicked out of The Beautiful People. They humiliated her by placing a brown paper bag over her head.
Rayne's apology was written on a brown paper bag.
Lane debuted in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) as Madison Rayne on the January 8 episode of TNA Impact!, where she was defeated by Awesome Kong.[2] She returned on the February 12 episode of Impact! in a TNA Knockouts Gauntlet match, and was one of the finalists, but was eliminated by Sojo Bolt.[14] The following week, she began her first storyline by slapping and walking out on her tag team partner Taylor Wilde in a match against The Beautiful People (Angelina Love and Velvet Sky).[2] On the March 5 episode of Impact!, Rayne aligned herself with The Beautiful People after assisting them in winning a four-way tag team match.[2]
At Destination X in March, Rayne made her pay-per-view debut, teaming with Love and Sky against The Governor, Wilde and Roxxi in a losing effort.[15] At Hard Justice in August, Rayne cost Love her Knockout Title when her interference in the match backfired.[2] On the following episode of Impact!, Rayne was scheduled to face Love in a match, but before it started, Love attacked her from behind.[16] After Love had pinned Rayne, Sky showed up holding a brown paper bag and put it on Rayne's head to humiliate her.[16] Rayne was then saved by Tara and Christy Hemme.[2] On the September 10 episode of Impact!, Rayne and partner Roxxi lost to The Beautiful People in a match that was part of a tournament to crown the inaugural Knockouts Tag Team Champions.[2] The following week, Rayne, after helping Love and Sky advance to the finals of the tournament, was welcomed back into The Beautiful People.[2][17] At No Surrender Rayne replaced Love, who had been released from her contract, due to visa issues, prior to the event, and teamed up with Sky in the tournament finals, where they were defeated by the team of Sarita and Taylor Wilde.[2]
On October 1, Lacey Von Erich made her debut and joined Rayne and Sky as the third member of the new Beautiful People.[2][18] Rayne gained her first victory in TNA on the October 8 episode of Impact! by scoring the deciding fall in an eight-Knockout elimination match where she, Sky, Alissa Flash and Traci Brooks defeated Sarita, Taylor Wilde, Hamada and Christy Hemme.[19]
Love returned to the company on the January 14, 2010, episode of Impact!, but instead of re-joining The Beautiful People, she attacked them.[20] Several weeks later on March 8, Rayne and Sky defeated the teams of Love and Tara and Sarita and Wilde in a three-way match to win the vacant Knockouts Tag Team Championship.[21] Under the Freebird rule, all three members of The Beautiful People were considered champions, and any combination of two members could defend the title.[7] At Lockdown in April, Rayne and Sky partnered against Tara and Angelina Love in a tag team steel cage match, during which Rayne pinned Tara to win Love's title.[7][22] With the win, she became the first person to hold both Knockout Championships simultaneously. The following month at Sacrifice, Rayne defeated Tara in a Title vs. Career match, causing Tara to retire from TNA and ending the storyline rivalry between Tara and The Beautiful People.[23] At Slammiversary VIII Rayne retained her title against Roxxi in another Title vs. Career match.[24]
On July 11 at Victory Road Rayne lost the Women's Knockout Championship to Angelina Love in another Title vs. Career match via disqualification due to outside interference from a person incognito in a motorcycle helmet. Prior to the match it was announced that the title would change hands via disqualification, if either Velvet Sky or Lacey Von Erich interfered in the match.[25] However, the title was returned to Rayne on the July 22 episode of Impact! when it was declared that there was no proof that the person who had interfered in the match was either Sky or Von Erich, making Rayne a two-time Women's Knockout Champion.[26][27] After weeks of arguing amongst each other over Rayne's recent attitude, the Beautiful People agreed to a truce on the July 29 episode of Impact!.[28] However, on the following episode of Impact!, Rayne and the mystery woman inadvertently cost Sky and Von Erich the TNA Knockouts Tag Team Championship in a match against Hamada and Taylor Wilde, when their interference backfired.[29][30] The following week Rayne lost the Women's Knockout Championship to Angelina Love, after a distraction caused by Velvet Sky attacking the mystery woman.[31] Rayne received her rematch for the title on the following week's episode of Impact!, but was again defeated by Love, after an interference from Velvet Sky, who accompanied Love to the ring. After the match Rayne and the mystery woman beat down Love and Sky.[32] Rayne's mysterious ally was finally unmasked as Tara on the September 2 episode of Impact!, when the two of them defeated the reunited Beautiful People in a tag team match.[33] At No Surrender Rayne was defeated by Velvet Sky in a singles match.[34] On the September 16 episode of Impact! Rayne and Tara turned on Lacey Von Erich, after she and Rayne failed to regain the TNA Knockouts Tag Team Championship from Hamada and Wilde. Von Erich was then saved by Love and Sky, who took her back into the Beautiful People.[35] On the September 30 episode of Impact! Rayne signed a waiver to allow Tara to return to the ring, after losing a Title vs. Career match, which was supposed to end her TNA career.[36] Rayne attempted to regain the Women's Knockout Championship in a Four Corners match with Love, Sky and Tara on October 10 at Bound for Glory, but was unsuccessful, when Tara pinned Sky to win the title. After the match the outraged Rayne went after special referee Mickie James, but ended up being laid out by her.[37] At the following day's tapings of the October 14 episode of Impact!, Tara laid down for Rayne and let her pin her to win the championship back, making her a three time Women's Knockout Champion[38][39] On the December 16 episode of Impact!, Rayne and Tara defeated Mickie James and Miss Tessmacher to advance to the finals of a tournament for the vacated TNA Knockouts Tag Team Championship.[40] The following week they were defeated in the finals by the team of Angelina Love and Winter.[41]
On January 9, 2011, at Genesis, Rayne successfully defended the Women's Knockout Championship against Mickie James, following interference from Tara.[42] Later that same month, Rayne debuted a new gimmick of a beauty queen and dubbed herself the "Queen Bee of the Knockouts". Around this time she also began using a loaded glove as her signature weapon to knock out her opponents.[8][43] The following month at Against All Odds Rayne again successfully defended her title against James, this time in a Last Knockout Standing match, after another interference by Tara.[44] Afterwards Rayne, claiming to now be done with James, announced the beginning of an open challenge series intended to find her new opponents, and, as part of it, successfully defended the Women's Knockout Championship against former knockouts ODB, Roxxi and Alissa Flash.[45][46][47] On the March 17 episode of Impact!, Rayne was challenged to a one last title match by Mickie James, which she accepted with the added stipulation that should James fail to beat her, she would have her hair shaved off.[47] On April 8, Rayne became the longest reigning TNA Women's Knockout Champion in history by breaking the previous record of 178 days, set by Awesome Kong. On April 17 at Lockdown, Rayne lost the Women's Knockout Championship to Mickie James in a steel cage Title vs. Hair match, ending her reign at 188 days.[48] During the past months, Tara had begun feeling uncomfortable over the brutality of Rayne's attacks towards James and when Rayne asked for a rematch for the Women's Knockout Championship, James agreed to give her one on the condition that should she be unable to regain the title, Tara would be released from her exclusive contract with Rayne.[49][50] On May 15 at Sacrifice, Rayne failed in her attempt to regain the Women's Knockout Championship, when Tara turned on her.[51]
Rayne attacked Tara on the June 9 episode of Impact Wrestling, costing her and Mickie James their tag team match against Angelina Love and Winter.[52] The two faced each other in a singles match on the July 14 episode of Impact Wrestling, where Tara was victorious after distracting Rayne with her tarantula Poison.[53] Rayne returned on the September 29 episode of Impact Wrestling, defeating Tara to earn a shot at the Women's Knockout Championship at Bound for Glory.[54] On October 16 at Bound for Glory, Rayne was defeated by Velvet Sky in the four-way title match, which also included Mickie James and Winter.[55] On the following episode of Impact Wrestling, Rayne aligned herself with Gail Kim and the Vice President of the Knockouts Division, Karen Jarrett.[56] On the November 3 episode of Impact Wrestling, Rayne and Kim defeated Brooke Tessmacher and Tara to win the Knockouts Tag Team Championship.[57] The following week they made their first title defense, defeating Mickie James and Velvet Sky.[58] On December 11 at Final Resolution, Rayne caused a distraction during a Women's Knockout Championship match between Gail Kim and Mickie James, costing James the title.[59] After Karen Jarrett was, in storyline, fired from TNA on the December 15 episode of Impact Wrestling, Rayne took over her role as the Vice President of the Knockouts Division,[60] until Sting revoked her power on December 29 episode of Impact Wrestling.[61] Later that same night, Rayne interfered in the main event between Gail Kim and Mickie James, once again costing James the Women's Knockout Championship.[61] On the January 5 episode of Impact Wrestling, Rayne and Kim retained their tag team title against James and Traci Brooks.[62] On the January 19 episode of Impact Wrestling, Rayne was defeated by James in a steel cage match.[63] After walking out on Gail Kim at Against All Odds, Rayne became the number one contender to her TNA Women's Knockout Championship by winning a battle royal on the February 16 episode of Impact Wrestling.[64] In the following weeks, tension between Rayne and Kim began to be teased with the two negatively interfering in each other's matches.[65][66] On the March 8 episode of Impact Wrestling, Kim and Rayne lost the Knockouts Tag Team Championship to Eric Young and ODB.[67] On March 18 at Victory Road, Rayne failed to capture the Women's Knockout Championship from Kim.[68] On the March 29 episode of Impact Wrestling, Kim and Rayne reconciled and remained together as a team.[69]
