Father of Meg Sargent, portrait artist and actress. Cecil Claude Holland was born in Gravesend-On-Thames, England, son of Richard Henry Holland, an English sea captain. At the age of sixteen he sailed from England to Vancouver, B.C., where he disembarked and began a new life in the Americas. He helped with the reconstruction of San Francisco after the earthquake of 1906.
Holland performed as an actor in touring companies and eventually wound up in Hollywood around 1915. Volunteered for the U.S. Army during World War I, serving in France, and was granted U.S. citizenship as a result. Being an expert in applying his own character make-up, Holland started doing make-up for other actors in the films in which he appeared, eventually leaving acting in favor of full-time make-up. He was the first head of the make-up department at MGM.
Described in the Los Angeles Times as "The Man Of A Thousand Faces", due to his ability to transform himself into many disparate characters. Ultimately this moniker was inherited by his friend Lon Chaney. Was quite adept at construction, building a self-designed glider and an automobile. Proficient oil painter, wood carver, sculptor and stage magician. Strong ability as a mimic of various English and American accents. Lived in the Beverly Hills and Van Nuys sections of Los Angeles.

$3.7-million cleanup plan proposed for skid row

In a break with the city's earlier confrontational stance, Los Angeles' chief administrative officer Monday proposed a $3.7-million skid row cleanup program that would increase 24-hour bathroom access for homeless people and expand storage for their belongings. The proposal, which must be approved by the City Council, calls for setting aside part of a skid row parking lot where homeless people can check their shopping carts and small bins for the day. The plan would also expand a seven-day storage operation by 500 bins, and move a 90-day storage facility east of Alameda Street into the heart of skid row. The increased round-the-clock bathroom access would be funded by the city at existing skid row shelters and social service agencies.

Turning the Cecil Hotel into homeless housing was supposed to be a quick and innovative way to get skid row residents off the streets. But a proposal for hundreds of homeless units in the hotel collapsed recently in the face of opposition from downtown business leaders and social service providers, backed by Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina. They argued the neighborhood is oversaturated with homeless housing and other services. "Supervisor Molina's strong opinion is that the skid row area is the way it is because of an over-concentration of services," Roxane Marquez, Molina's press deputy, said Friday.

The city of Los Angeles is dropping an appeal of a court ruling banning the seizure and destruction of property that homeless people leave unattended on public sidewalks, Rob Wilcox, spokesman for City Atty. Mike Feuer, said Monday. Feuer's decision ends three years of legal wrangling over health and safety on skid row. Eight skid row residents filed suit in 2011, accusing city workers, accompanied by police, of confiscating and dumping their personal possessions -- medication, identification, cellphones and toiletries.

Holland
Holland is a region and former province on the western coast of the Netherlands. The name Holland is also frequently used to informally refer to the whole of the country of the Netherlands. This usage is commonly accepted in other countries, but in the Netherlands and particularly in other regions of the country it could be found undesirable or even insulting.
From the 10th to the 16th century, Holland proper was a unified political region within the Holy Roman Empire as a county ruled by the Counts of Holland. By the 17th century, Holland had risen to become a maritime and economic power, dominating the other provinces of the newly independent Dutch Republic.
The area of the former County of Holland roughly coincides with the two current Dutch provinces of North Holland and South Holland, which together include the Netherlands' three largest cities: the capital city of Amsterdam; Rotterdam, home of Europe's largest port; and the seat of government of The Hague.

Los Angeles (
i/lɒs ˈændʒəlᵻs/ loss AN-jə-ləs or loss AN-jə-liss) (Spanish for "The Angels"), officially the City of Los Angeles and often known by its initials L.A., is the second-largest city in the United States after New York City, the most populous city in the state of California, and the county seat of Los Angeles County.
Situated in Southern California, Los Angeles is known for its mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, sprawling metropolis, and as a major center of the American entertainment industry. Los Angeles lies in a large coastal basin surrounded on three sides by mountains reaching up to and over 10,000 feet (3,000 m).
Historically home to the Chumash and Tongva, Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542 along with the rest of what would become Alta California. The city was officially founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. The city experienced rapid growth with the discovery of oil.

At the age of sixteen he sailed from England to Vancouver, B.C., where he disembarked and began a new life in the Americas. He helped with the reconstruction of San Francisco after the earthquake of 1906.
Holland performed as an actor in touring companies and eventually wound up in Hollywood around 1915. Volunteered for the U.S. Army during World War I, serving in France, and was granted U.S. citizenship as a result. Being an expert in applying his own character make-up, Holland started doing make-up for other actors in the films in which he appeared, eventually leaving acting in favor of full-time make-up. He was the first head of the make-up department at MGM.
Described in the Los Angeles Times as "The Man Of A Thousand Faces", due to his ability to transform himself into many disparate characters. Ultimately this moniker was inherited by his friend Lon Chaney. Was quite adept at construction, building a self-designed glider and an automobile. Proficient oil painter, wood carver, sculptor and stage magician. Strong ability as a mimic of various English and American accents. Lived in the Beverly Hills and Van Nuys sections of Los Angeles.

In a break with the city's earlier confrontational stance, Los Angeles' chief administrative officer Monday proposed a $3.7-million skid row cleanup program that would increase 24-hour bathroom access for homeless people and expand storage for their belongings. The proposal, which must be approved by the City Council, calls for setting aside part of a skid row parking lot where homeless people can check their shopping carts and small bins for the day. The plan would also expand a seven-day storage operation by 500 bins, and move a 90-day storage facility east of Alameda Street into the heart of skid row. The increased round-the-clock bathroom access would be funded by the city at existing skid row shelters and social service agencies.

Turning the Cecil Hotel into homeless housing was supposed to be a quick and innovative way to get skid row residents off the streets. But a proposal for hundreds of homeless units in the hotel collapsed recently in the face of opposition from downtown business leaders and social service providers, backed by Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina. They argued the neighborhood is oversaturated with homeless housing and other services. "Supervisor Molina's strong opinion is that the skid row area is the way it is because of an over-concentration of services," Roxane Marquez, Molina's press deputy, said Friday.

The city of Los Angeles is dropping an appeal of a court ruling banning the seizure and destruction of property that homeless people leave unattended on public sidewalks, Rob Wilcox, spokesman for City Atty. Mike Feuer, said Monday. Feuer's decision ends three years of legal wrangling over health and safety on skid row. Eight skid row residents filed suit in 2011, accusing city workers, accompanied by police, of confiscating and dumping their personal possessions -- medication, identification, cellphones and toiletries.

In 1567, the much-traveled Italian, Lodovico Guicciardini, referred to Amsterdam as 'The Venice of the North'. Today, the view across the main square and royal castle gives little hint that the city is supported by stakes and that Amsterdam is the largest lakeland village in the world.
The bicycle is one of the city's main features. Parking spaces have been designed specially for this mode of transport and it shows that even in a large city, there is an alternative way of getting about.
In the city centre, there are nearly 7,000 protected houses and warehouses, most of which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The 300 year old Magere Brug is of wood construction and is one of the most beautiful drawbridges in the world.
The Bloemenmarkt has been in existence since the 17th century and in bygone days, fresh flowers were delivered by boat and sold on board. Here a great variety of colorful tulips and bulbs is offered for sale, as well as many exotic plants and seeds.
New Church is almost 600 years old but due to it's lack of worshippers, it is now used as a venue for exhibitions and concerts which fund its continued maintenance. Built around 1300 A.D., Old Church is the oldest religious building in the city. During the Middle Ages, it served as a refuge for vagrants but today it is surrounded by a sex and entertainment district.
In 1682, the city fathers decided to create a leisure area east of the city, in the centre of which the Artis Zoo was subsequently established, the oldest zoo on the European continent.
Amsterdam possesses an inescapable charm that is adored by both aged hippies and trendy teenagers alike. It is Europe's irresistible 'Capital of Cool'!

Strengthen Our School: Keep the Promise to Fully Fund Public Education
On Monday, October 27, 2014, the Tupelo Association of Educators and Mississippi Association of Educators (MAE) in conjunction with Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton co-sponsored the education panel presentation Strengthen Our Schools: Keep the promise to fully fund public education.
State and local leaders discussed the critical underfunding of Mississippi's public schools, the impact underfunding has on students and communities, and how the ballot initiative Better Schools, Better Jobs will protect each child's fundamental right to educational opportunity through the 12th grade.
"Our message is clear. Our students, educators, and communities, as well as our local businesses, towns, and cities deserve thriving public schools," said MAE President Joyce Helmick.
"Mississippi educators are committed to keeping the promise to fully fund public education and are working to ensure the ballot initiative
Better Schools, Better Jobs is added to our State constitution. We know that when State elected leaders fully fund our public schools year in and year out, our students will thrive and so will the communities and businesses where they live."
Since 2009, State leaders have underfunded Mississippi's public schools by $1.5 billion which could fund smaller class sizes, early childhood education, purchase needed textbooks and technology, and provide for more arts, academics, and athletics for our students.
