A primary energy factor (PEF) for electricity describes the ratio between end-user consumption of electricity and primary energy consumption. In recent years, the EU has implemented regulatory use of PEFs in the energy policy framework. As a result, PEFs now play a role in the regulation of production and consumption of electricity throughout Europe.
A key challenge is the lack of professional and/or political agreement on how the PEF shall be determined. Up until today, approaches used to determine PEFs have lacked foundation in objective methodologies, and the discussions have often been plagued by sectorial interest and political goals. Regulatory application of PEFs can create enormous challenges for European authorities and other energy market interests in the future. Depending on the case, the determination of a PEF may push end-users to alter their consumption of energy, decisions on energy efficiency and/or choice of energy fuels. Thus, PEFs may affect European countries’ ability to achieve long-term energy- and climate goals.
In this webinar, Andreas Aamodt presentes from a framework to determine PEFs for electricity. He also discusses to what degree such conversion factors are appropriate or required for use in the context of EU energy policy.

As you indubitably know, large pieces of equipment like a bottle washer consume huge amounts of energy. It doesn't have to be like this! The remedy is to integrate a unit-type cogeneration plant, which as it produces electricity also generates heat, which in its turn can be passed directly to the consumer, which is the bottle washer. The cogeneration plant utilises up to 90 per cent of the fuel or primary energy deployed.

Spain has become the first country to use wind power as their primary source of energy.
In 2013, energy from wind farms made up 20 point 9 percent of the power used by Spain, with nuclear power in close second providing 20 point 8 percent.
Renewable energy sources reportedly make up a total of 42 point 4 percent of the power used by Spain with just over 14 percent of the country's energy coming from hydroelectric power, and just over 3 percent from solar power.
The use of wind power increased by 13 point 2 percent from the previous year, producing a record setting 54,478 Gigawatt hours of electricity.
The Spanish Wind Energy Association released a statement saying: "Spain is the first country in the world where wind energy was the technology that most contributed to the coverage of demand in a full year."
Although nuclear power plants technically produced more energy than the wind farms during 2013, the electricity it takes to run a nuclear power plant gave wind the upper hand.

Primary energy is an energy form found in nature that has not been subjected to any conversion or transformation process. It is energy contained in raw fuels, and other forms of energy received as input to a system. Primary energy can be non-renewable or renewable.
The concept of primary energy is used in energy statistics in the compilation of energy balances, as well as in the field of energetics. In energetics, a primary energy source (PES) refers to the energy forms required by the energy sector to generate the supply of energy carriers used by human society.
Primary energy sources should not be confused with the energy systems (or conversion processes) through which they are converted into energy carriers.
Primary energy sources are transformed in energy conversion processes to more convenient forms of energy (that can directly be used by society), such as electrical energy, refined fuels, or synthetic fuels such as hydrogen fuel. In the field of energetics, these forms are called energy carriers and correspond to the concept of "secondary energy" in energy statistics.

A primary energy factor (PEF) for electricity describes the ratio between end-user consumption of electricity and primary energy consumption. In recent years, the EU has implemented regulatory use of PEFs in the energy policy framework. As a result, PEFs now play a role in the regulation of production and consumption of electricity throughout Europe.
A key challenge is the lack of professional and/or political agreement on how the PEF shall be determined. Up until today, approaches used to determine PEFs have lacked foundation in objective methodologies, and the discussions have often been plagued by sectorial interest and political goals. Regulatory application of PEFs can create enormous challenges for European authorities and other energy market interests in the future. Depending on the case, the determination of a PEF may push end-users to alter their consumption of energy, decisions on energy efficiency and/or choice of energy fuels. Thus, PEFs may affect European countries’ ability to achieve long-term energy- and climate goals.
In this webinar, Andreas Aamodt presentes from a framework to determine PEFs for electricity. He also discusses to what degree such conversion factors are appropriate or required for use in the context of EU energy policy.

The remedy is to integrate a unit-type cogeneration plant, which as it produces electricity also generates heat, which in its turn can be passed directly to the consumer, which is the bottle washer. The cogeneration plant utilises up to 90 per cent of the fuel or primary energy deployed.

In 2013, energy from wind farms made up 20 point 9 percent of the power used by Spain, with nuclear power in close second providing 20 point 8 percent.
Renewable energy sources reportedly make up a total of 42 point 4 percent of the power used by Spain with just over 14 percent of the country's energy coming from hydroelectric power, and just over 3 percent from solar power.
The use of wind power increased by 13 point 2 percent from the previous year, producing a record setting 54,478 Gigawatt hours of electricity.
The Spanish Wind Energy Association released a statement saying: "Spain is the first country in the world where wind energy was the technology that most contributed to the coverage of demand in a full year."
Although nuclear power plants technically produced more energy than the wind farms during 2013, the electricity it takes to run a nuclear power plant gave wind the upper hand.
