The European Union's most successful policy field, enlargement has transformed not only the institutions of the EU; it has also had a transformative impact on those countries that have joined over the last 40 years. In this workshop, participants explored the new insights into the enlargement policy (the conditions for membership and the steps towards joining the Union). They also explored some of the more political and problematic rounds of enlargement with a particular focus on Britain and Turkey.
Workshop Leader: Michael Geary
Michael J. Geary is Assistant Professor of Modern Europe and the European Union at Maastricht University in the Netherlands and Global Fellow with the Global Europe Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. He has previously been Fulbright-Schuman Professor at the Catholic University of American (D.C.) and a European Parliament-Bronisław Geremek Research Fellow at the College of Europe (Warsaw, Poland). He is the author of two books on themes relating to EU integration and enlargement, the most recent, Enlarging the European Union: The Commission Seeking Influence, 1961-1973 was published by Palgrave Macmillan in September 2013. A native of Ireland and a First Class graduate of the National University of Ireland, he holds a Ph.D. from the European University Institute, Florence, Italy.

The peaceful transformation in postcommunist Europe is a tribute not only to the peoples and leaders of those 10 countries, but also to the umbrella provided by the European Union. Dr. Michael Leigh, who has served as director-general for enlargement since 2006, highlighted the successes of the enlargement process to date as well as the main challenges to come.

This is how the Guardian describes the contents of the ad:
The video, entitled Growing Together, features a white woman dressed in yellow -- the colour of the stars of the EU -- walking calmly through a warehouse. As a gong sounds, she looks behind her as an aggressive Chinese-looking man shouting kung fu slogans jumps down in the style of the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
As he moves towards her, an Indian-looking man in traditional dress wielding a knife levitates towards her. He is a master of kalaripayattu, a martial art from the southern Indian state of Kerala. As she deals with him, a black man with dreadlocks cartwheels towards her in the style of capoeira, the Brazilian martial art.
The woman stares at the men. She then multiplies herself to form a circle around the men who drop their weapons and sit down. The woman's yellow outfit then turns into the stars of the EU.
The video shows the words: "The more we are, the stronger we are." It then says: "Click here to learn more about EU enlargement."

Enlargement of the European Union
The process of expanding the European Union (EU) through the accession of new member states began with the Inner Six, who founded the European Economic Community (the EU's predecessor) in 1958, when the Treaty of Rome came into force. Since then, the EU's membership has grown to twenty-eight, with the latest member state being Croatia, which joined in July 2013.
The most recent territorial enlargement of the EU was the incorporation of Mayotte in 2014. The most notable territorial reductions of the EU, and its predecessors, were the exit of Algeria upon independence in 1962 and the exit of Greenland in 1985.
Currently, accession negotiations are under way with several states. The process of enlargement is sometimes referred to as European integration. This term is also used to refer to the intensification of co-operation between EU member states as national governments allow for the gradual harmonisation of national laws.
To join the European Union, a state needs to fulfil economic and political conditions called the Copenhagen criteria (after the Copenhagen summit in June 1993), which require a stable democratic government that respects the rule of law, and its corresponding freedoms and institutions. According to the Maastricht Treaty, each current member state and the European Parliament must agree to any enlargement.

European Union
The European Union (EU) is a politico-economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. It covers an area of 4,324,782 km2, with an estimated population of over 508 million. The EU operates through a system of supranational institutions and intergovernmental-negotiated decisions by the member states. The institutions are: the European Parliament, the European Council, the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central Bank, and the Court of Auditors. The European Parliament is elected every five years by EU citizens.
The EU has developed an internal single market through a standardised system of laws that apply in all member states. Within the Schengen Area, passport controls have been abolished. EU policies aim to ensure the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital, enact legislation in justice and home affairs, and maintain common policies on trade,agriculture,fisheries, and regional development. The monetary union was established in 1999 and came into full force in 2002. It is currently composed of 19 member states that use the euro as their legal tender.

The European Union's most successful policy field, enlargement has transformed not only the institutions of the EU; it has also had a transformative impact on those countries that have joined over the last 40 years. In this workshop, participants explored the new insights into the enlargement policy (the conditions for membership and the steps towards joining the Union). They also explored some of the more political and problematic rounds of enlargement with a particular focus on Britain and Turkey.
Workshop Leader: Michael Geary
Michael J. Geary is Assistant Professor of Modern Europe and the European Union at Maastricht University in the Netherlands and Global Fellow with the Global Europe Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. He has previously been Fulbright-Schuman Professor at the Catholic University of American (D.C.) and a European Parliament-Bronisław Geremek Research Fellow at the College of Europe (Warsaw, Poland). He is the author of two books on themes relating to EU integration and enlargement, the most recent, Enlarging the European Union: The Commission Seeking Influence, 1961-1973 was published by Palgrave Macmillan in September 2013. A native of Ireland and a First Class graduate of the National University of Ireland, he holds a Ph.D. from the European University Institute, Florence, Italy.

I'm not the owner of this video. The European Commission was forced to withdraw this video in March 2012 after it was criticised as "racist." This video was created to promote the enlargement of the European Union.
This is how the Guardian describes the contents of the ad:
The video, entitled Growing Together, features a white woman dressed in yellow -- the colour of the stars of the EU -- walking calmly through a warehouse. As a gong sounds, she looks behind her as an aggressive Chinese-looking man shouting kung fu slogans jumps down in the style of the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
As he moves towards her, an Indian-looking man in traditional dress wielding a knife levitates towards her. He is a master of kalaripayattu, a martial art from the southern Indian state of Kerala. As she deals with him, a black man with dreadlocks cartwheels towards her in the style of capoeira, the Brazilian martial art.
The woman stares at the men. She then multiplies herself to form a circle around the men who drop their weapons and sit down. The woman's yellow outfit then turns into the stars of the EU.
The video shows the words: "The more we are, the stronger we are." It then says: "Click here to learn more about EU enlargement."
