Follow-the-leader

In a marching band, follow-the-leader is a visual effect in which one band member follows the next. The move can be from side to side, front to back, or diagonal. Advanced follow-the-leader movements may have Bézier curves.

"Follow-the-leader" can also refer to a children's game where one child plays the "leader" and leads others around a playground or an area, making repetitive actions that the others subsequently follow.

Follow the leader (game)

Follow the leader is a children's game. First a leader or "head of the line" is chosen, then the children all line up behind the leader. The leader then moves around and all the children have to mimic the leader's actions. Any players who fail to follow or do what the leader does are out of the game. When only one person other than the leader remains, that player becomes the leader, and the game begins again with all players joining the line once again.

Other versions

In 2007, The Wiggles wrote a song "Follow the Leader" about the game for The Wiggles' album Getting Strong (Wiggle and Learn). The song was available on DVD in The Wiggles' You Make Me Feel Like Dancing.

The Leader (Corning)

The Leader is an American daily newspaper published in Corning, New York. It is owned by GateHouse Media.

The newspaper covers the city of Corning and surrounding villages such as Addison, Bath and Erwin, in Steuben County, and Horseheads, in Chemung County.

History

The history of The Leader stretches back to two competing newspapers in Corning in the mid-19th century. Its earliest predecessor was The Corning Journal, a weekly newspaper established in 1847 as "an independent family newspaper, free from party politics". George W. Pratt served as editor of the Journal for a half-century, from 1851 until his death in 1906. His son, future Congressman Harry H. Pratt, ran the paper until 1918.

The weekly Corning Sun debuted in 1853, later changing its name to the Southern Tier Farmer and then, in April 1857, the Corning Democrat, to reflect its ties to the Democratic Party. The Democrat established a daily newspaper in 1884, and in 1903 changed its name to The Evening Leader. Another future congressman, Edwin Underhill, served as publisher of The Evening Leader and oversaw its repudiation of 19th century-style partisan journalism.

The Leader was a radical weekly newspaper, published in London from 1850 to 1860 at a price of 6d.

Founders

George Henry Lewes and Thornton Leigh Hunt founded The Leader in 1850. They had financial backing from Edmund Larken, who was an unconventional clergyman looking for a vehicle for "Christian liberal" views. Others involved were George Dawson and Richard Congreve. After a year Larken and Holyoake took over the rest of the shares.

Contributors

Lewes contributed theatre criticism under the pseudonym 'Vivian'. Later editors appear to have included Edward Frederick Smyth Pigott (proprietor from the end of 1851 to 1860) and Frederick Guest Tomlins. Contributors included Thomas Spencer Baynes,Wilkie Collins,George Eliot, Andrew Halliday, the future theatre manager John Hollingshead (1827–1904), the future politician James Mackenzie Maclean (1835–1906), the future anthropologist John McLennan, Gerald Massey, the art critic Henry Merritt (1822–1877), Edmund Ollier (1826–1886), Herbert Spencer, and the political journalist Edward Michael Whitty (1827–1860). The paper carried correspondence from William Edward Forster (proposing state farms and workshops) and Barbara Bodichon (on prostitution).

Religion in The Simpsons

Religion is one of the themes on the American animated television series The Simpsons. Much of the series' religious humor satirizes aspects of Christianity and religion in general. However, some episodes, such as "Bart Sells His Soul" and "Alone Again, Natura-Diddily", can be interpreted as having a spiritual theme. The show has been both praised and criticized by atheists, agnostics, liberals, conservatives and religious people in general for its portrayal of faith and religion in society. The show can function as a mediator of biblical literacy among younger generations of irreligious viewers.

Analysis

Although The Simpsons often mocks religion, it has received support from some groups claiming to be religious. In a 2001 article for The Christian Century, John Dart argued that

On December 2009, an article published in L'Osservatore Romano, the Holy See's official newspaper, praised The Simpsons for its "realistic" way of dealing with religion. "Homer finds in God his last refuge, even though he sometimes gets His name sensationally wrong. But these are just minor mistakes, after all; the two know each other well", the article said. The Simpson family is often seen attending church, a practice described by Dart as "rarely seen or mentioned in other TV shows." Simpsons creator Matt Groening has also stated that the Simpsons is one of the few shows on television where the family attends church regularly. The characters in the family are often seen praying. William Romanowski, author of the book Pop Culture Wars: Religion and the Role of Entertainment in American Life, noted that "The Simpsons is not dismissive of faith, but treats religion as an integral part of American life. Episodes that I’ve seen are not so much irreverent toward religion, but poke fun at American attitudes and practices."
