TOPIC: PHYLUM CNIDARIA GENERAL FEATURES
1. The phylum ‘Cnidaria’ (Gr. knide, nettle or stinging cells) comprises the animals with stinging cells or nematocysts.
2. These animals also possess the cavity ‘coelenteron’ (Coelom + Enteron), so formerly known as ‘Coelenterates’.
3. Cnidarians (Coelenterates) are radially symmetrical animals with cell-tissue grade of body organization
4. Body wall is diploblastic with two germ layers: ecotoderm and endoderm (gastroderm).
5. All cnidarians are aquatic (also Porifera and Echinodermata), mostly marine.
6. Solitary (Hydra) or colonial (Obelia), sedentary (Obelia) or free swimming (Aurelia).
7. Cnidarians exhibit dimorphism with polypoid and medusoid stage (Metagenesis or alternation of generation).
8. A sexual phase is generally polyp and sexual phase is medusa. 9. Some members like Physalia (Portugese man-of-war) exhibits polymorphism i.e., occurrence of several morphological types like dactylozooid (protective polyp without mouth and with a long basal tentacle), gastrozooid (feeding polyp with a mouth and a long tentacle) gonozooid (reproductive polyp which produces sexual medusae or gonophores).

Cnidaria (
/naɪˈdɛəriə/ with a silent c) is a phylum containing over 10,000species of animals found exclusively in aquatic and mostly marine environments. Their distinguishing feature is cnidocytes, specialized cells that they use mainly for capturing prey. Their bodies consist of mesoglea, a non-living jelly-like substance, sandwiched between two layers of epithelium that are mostly one cell thick. They have two basic body forms: swimming medusae and sessile polyps, both of which are radially symmetrical with mouths surrounded by tentacles that bear cnidocytes. Both forms have a single orifice and body cavity that are used for digestion and respiration. Many cnidarian species produce colonies that are single organisms composed of medusa-like or polyp-like zooids, or both. Cnidarians' activities are coordinated by a decentralized nerve net and simple receptors. Several free-swimming Cubozoa and Scyphozoa possess balance-sensing statocysts, and some have simple eyes. Not all cnidarians reproduce sexually. Many have complex lifecycles with asexual polyp stages and sexual medusae, but some omit either the polyp or the medusa stage.
