Playwright/Director's
Notes:
When coming to
UW-L I had no intentions to write a play ever in my life.
Play writing was my second least favorite type of writing and this project was a daunting task. I do plan to one day write a novel, and that's how this started. I participate in
National Novel Writing Month where you are challenged to write a 50,
000 word novel in the month of November. The original story I planned involved magic, a prophecy, and traveling to an alternate universe. The story I ended up writing was a slice-of-life about a group of college kids. I still don't know how that happened. I did know that the final story was good and needed to be shared. I decided to dedicate my senior capstone project to telling this story.
Kevin, the main character, is working on his senior capstone project for his art major. He is creating a collection of artwork in various media that show no matter what our differences are, we all love. His story became my capstone project as well.
People told Kevin their stories, and he showed them through his drawings. Now, I'm telling two of those stories today with these scenes. Neither of these stories is complete; they are but quick snapshots of love. I have been working with this story for almost my whole time at UW-L.
I've taken all I've learned and used it to now share this story with a wider audience. I'm not sure where the story will go after this. Hopefully it will get published in some form, maybe even performed as a full staged production.
Whatever happens, I'm very glad to share this story with you today and for all the support I've gotten for it.
To my wonderful cast: Thank you for helping me to bring this story to life. You all came in so excited and accomplished so much in a short amount of time. Thank you for putting up with all the printing and different versions of the script we went through. I'm so glad to have been able to work with all of you.
To the UW-L
Theater Faculty:
Thank you for everything you have taught me, in class and outside of it. I have enjoyed working with all of you. A special thanks to
Beth Cherne for being my advisor and having so much trust in me. No matter how crazy my ideas might have been, you let me run with them and guided me through everything.
To my friends in
La Crosse, JC's
Village, RU, and Theater students, thank you for all you have done for me over the years and being there to support me.
To my family:
Mary, I know you are here in spirit. Thank you for all your support through this project and my life.
Mom and Dad, Thank you for always being there and continuing to love me and support me, even when you don't always understand what I'm doing.
To my "sister" Amy: Of course we would both have our senior shows the same weekend on opposite sides of the country. I know you're here with me in spirit.
Break a leg!
To
Cody and
Shannon: You two have been through it all from the very first nano and all the versions of this story, not to mention everything else that has happened the past 9 years we've known each other. Thank you for always answering my late night calls, responding to my crazy texts and messages, and being there for me anytime day or night.
There are many people who could not make it today, but have still been a huge help and support. You all mean so much to me, especially my
KFF family. You girls are always there for me to talk to and fangirl with. Thank you for being a huge support, even though you could not make it.
To
Sara: You are always there, and have from the very beginning been a part of this as much as you could. You mean so much to me, and
I love you.
I can't wait to see how the rest of our story goes, and maybe one day
I'll write it down.
To all of you who came to see the show, thank you so much.
Having you in the audience is the biggest support I could have! If you feel so inclined afterwards, tell me your story.
Tell me your story of love, if it's happy or sad, long or short, many people, only one, still looking, found early, lost, kept, torn, mended, whatever it is, I want to know.
Maybe one day I'll tell it.
