The Thousand Islands constitute an archipelago of 1,864 islands that straddles the Canada-U.S. border in the Saint Lawrence River as it emerges from the northeast corner of Lake Ontario. They stretch for about 50 miles (80 km) downstream from Kingston, Ontario. The Canadian islands are in the province of Ontario, the U.S. islands in the state of New York. Canada is home to the majority of islands at just over two-thirds in Ontario.
The 1,864 islands range in size from over 40 square miles (100 km2) to smaller islands occupied by a single residence, or uninhabited outcroppings of rocks that are only home to migratory waterfowl. To count as one of the Thousand Islands, emergent land within the river channel must have at least one square foot (0.093 m2) of land above water level year-round, and support at least two living trees.
Large freighters frequently ply the Saint Lawrence Seaway, but the area has so many shoals and rocks that foreign vessels must use maritime pilots to help them travel through the hazardous waterway. Under the Canadian span, a vessel just less than 25 feet (7.6 m) offshore can find itself in over 200 feet (61 m) of water. Similarly, rocks and shoals less than two feet (61 cm) underwater can be found in the center of channels 90 feet (27 m) deep.
10000 (ten thousand) is the natural number following 9999 and preceding 10001.
Many languages have a specific word for this number: in Ancient Greek it is μύριοι (related to the word myriad in English), in Aramaic ܪܒܘܬܐ, in Hebrew רבבה (revava), in Chinese 萬/万 (Mandarin wàn, Cantonese maan6, Hokkien bān), in Japanese 万/萬 [man], in Korean 만/萬 [man], and in Thai หมื่น [meun]. It is often used to mean an indefinite very large number.
The Greek root was used in early versions of the metric system in the form of the decimal prefix myria-.
The number 10000 can also be written 10,000 (UK and US), 10.000 (Europe mainland), 10 000 (transition metric), or 10•000 (with the dot raised to the middle of the zeroes; metric).
The Ten Thousand (Ancient Greek: οἱ Μύριοι) were a group of mercenary units, mainly Greek, drawn up by Cyrus the Younger to attempt to wrest the throne of the Persian Empire from his brother, Artaxerxes II. Their march to the Battle of Cunaxa and back to Greece (401–399 BC) was recorded by Xenophon (one of its leaders) in his work, The Anabasis.
The "ten thousand" marched inland and fought the Battle of Cunaxa and then marched back to Greece during the years 401 BC to 399 BC. Xenophon stated in The Anabasis that the Greek heavy troops scattered their opposition twice during the battle; only one Greek was even wounded. Only after the battle did they hear that Cyrus had been killed, making their victory irrelevant and the expedition a failure.
The "ten thousand" were in the middle of a very large empire with no food, no employer, and no reliable friends. They offered to make their Persian ally Ariaeus king, but he refused on the grounds that he was not of royal blood and so would not find enough support among the Persians to succeed. They offered their services to Tissaphernes, a leading satrap of Artaxerxes, but he refused them, and they refused to surrender to him. Tissaphernes was left with a problem; a large army of heavy troops, which he could not defeat by frontal assault. He supplied them with food and, after a long wait, led them northwards for home, meanwhile detaching Ariaeus and his light troops from their cause.
The Ten Thousand Islands are a chain of islands and mangrove islets off the coast of southwest Florida, between Cape Romano (at the southern end of Marco Island) and the mouth of Lostman's River. Some of the islands are high spots on a Submergent coastline. Others were produced by mangroves growing on oyster bars. Despite the name, the islets in the chain only number in the hundreds.
The northern part of the Ten Thousand Islands, between Cape Romano and Everglades City, is in the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. The southern part of the Ten Thousands Islands, south of Everglades City, is in Everglades National Park. The 99-mile long Wilderness Waterway begins at Everglades City and ends at Flamingo at the southern tip of the Florida peninsula. Administrative control of the islands is split between Collier County and Monroe County.
The Ten Thousand Islands were used and occupied by Native Americans for thousands of years. Evidence of former living sites can be found under as much as four feet of water. A number of shell rings and other shell complexes have been identified in or adjacent to the Ten Thousand Islands. The Horr's Island archaeological site at the northern end of the Ten Thousand Islands was occupied year-round 3,500 years ago, and other sites are presumed to have been inundated by a rise in sea level. The material culture of the Indians living in the Ten Thousand Islands was distinctive enough to be classified as at a least a sub-area of the Glades culture area.
An island /ˈaɪlənd/ or isle /ˈaɪl/ is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water. Very small islands such as emergent land features on atolls can be called islets, skerries, cays or keys. An island in a river or a lake island may be called an eyot or ait, or a holm. A grouping of geographically or geologically related islands is called an archipelago, e.g. the Philippines.
An island may be described as such despite the presence of an artificial land bridge, for example Singapore and its causeway, or the various Dutch delta islands, such as IJsselmonde. Some places may even retain "island" in their names for historical reasons after being connected to a larger landmass by a wide land bridge, such as Coney Island or Coronado Island. Conversely, when a piece of land is separated from the mainland by a man-made canal, for example the Peloponnese by the Corinth Canal, it is generally not considered an island.
There are two main types of islands: continental islands and oceanic islands. There are also artificial islands.

I finally got around to making the video for this trip (14 hour flights will do that to you). Canoe camping trip to the beautiful Ten Thousand Islands. We stopped and camped at Picnic Key after rough waves the first day, and then the next day was flat calm. We found a log on the beach that was on fire already when we got onto the island, so we took that as a good omen and stayed on Picnic. All in all, it was a great weekend. Enjoy!
We paddled our kayaks from the boat ramp at Collier Seminole State Park down the Black Water River out to the barrier Islands on the Gulf of Mexico stopping/camping at Jack-fish Island in the Ten Thousand Islands for the night. Waking up early to catch the in going tide before it became an out going tide we rose to a misting foggy morning paddle, but also smooth calm waters and a cool temperature all the way back to the boat ramp at Collier Seminole State Park. Three days and two nights in the northern part of the Everglades - the Ten Thousand Islands. We canoed through Indian Key Pass to Tiger and then Picnic Key about 16 miles total. Fished for Speckled Trout and enjoyed the 48 degree bug-free nights.
We leave you this morning at Florida's Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, where birds are waking up to a brand new day.
The Ten Thousand Island natural refuge is in southwest Florida's coast. It has thousands of years of human history beginning with the shell mounds of the Calusa Indians. In more recent history, in the late 1800s & early 1900s, settlers built crude houses and cisterns on some of the islands and lived there. Shown in this short film is a Calusa "shell mound" and the ruins of a more recent settlement abandoned in the early to mid-1900s. Also shown is the incredible beauty of this natural and protected paradise. You can fish, sail, and kayak here. Harp music by: Tomas PhUsIoN http://dig.ccmixter.org/licenses

A visit to Indonesia and Jakarta should also include a trip to any of the islands on Thousand Islands. The original plan was to visit Putri Island, but I got sea sick and had to stop on the first island from Jakarta called Pari, where only local Indonesian tourists go. On this particular day, it seemed like I had the whole island to myself. For the next six hours I enjoyed some jaw dropping beach and mangrove views. I also spent time eating bakso beef noodle soup for the first time, as well as delicious Batagor fried dumpling and tofu. I also snacked on Otak Otak fish cakes. This was such an amazing day. -------------------------------------------------- About Me: I'm Kyle Le and I live, travel, and eat in Vietnam and many Asian countries. This is the first film about the once abandoned immigrant hospital on Ellis Island. In the era before antibiotics, tens of thousands of immigrant patients were separated from family, detained in the hospital, and healed from illness before becoming citizens. 350 babies were born, and ten times that many immigrants died on Ellis Island, 3,500 were buried in pauper's graves around New York City.
Vienna's Danube Island, a river island artificially created some 20 years ago, has become a recreational retreat for tens of thousands of city dwellers. To tourists, it is an attraction praised in every traveller's guide. Sun worshipers, cyclists, skaters and night owls invade the island from the first days of spring until the fading of the autumn sun. No-one associates the island with wildlife and wilderness, and yet, unnoticed by most visitors, a secret army of wild animals has invaded the banks, forest and bushland right in the middle of a big river and a large city. Stone martens, beavers, rabbits, deer, herons, cormorants and black kites, various fishes, toads, frogs and insects have conquered the island and turned it into their own hunting and breeding grounds.
This is the story of one man and an island. Brendon Grimshaw purchased the island in 1962 and set about making the island habitable. He did this with the help of one other man, Rene Antoine Lafortune. Brendon Grimshaw, a British national, was editor to some of the most important newspapers in Africa. But in 1972, he gave it all up to go and live on Moyenne Island, which he purchased for ten thousand pounds. In the thirty-six-years that he has lived on the island, Brendon and his friend, Rene Lafortune, planted sixteen-thousand trees, built 4,8 kilometers of nature paths, and brought and bred 109 giant land tortoises, creating an island of incredible beauty now worth 34 million Euros. Come with us on this journey and discover why an 82-year-old man fears his island will one day be destro...

Known for its strange fauna, the Indonesian island of Flores may now have offered the world the strangest yet. The hobbit was an adult female no larger than a three-year-old child with a skull less than one-third the size of a modern human's. NOVA presents exclusive coverage of new excavations that were undertaken in the summer of 2007 at the site of Ling Bua on the island of Flores, Indonesia. These are the first investigations of the cave site since the sensational discovery of tiny and bizarre human fossil bones at the site in 2004. No more than 3 feet tall when fully grown, these tiny humans survived in the cave for tens of thousands of years, hunting the huge and fierce Komodo dragons that roamed their remote island home. In Alien from Earth, NOVA explores the latest evidence in a fu...

Oral storytelling has enjoyed a major resurgence in the last few years, with the massive popularity of The Moth, This American Life and even TED, and an explosion of breathless announcements about ‘the power of storytelling’. But for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the power of storytelling is not exactly breaking news – it’s knowledge that is tens of thousands of years old. Australia has many rich oral traditions, and the endurance of these traditions to the present day says more about the value of storytelling than anything. Curated and hosted by Genevieve Grieves – with guests including actor and filmmaker Pauline Whyman, elder and storyteller Larry Walsh and writer Hannah Donnelly – this night of yarns explores the theme of country through storytelling approaches...
Ten thousand glimmering like coals in our chest
Ball bearings drawn to the magnetic breath
Of ten thousand weeping with wings on their tears
Amidst ten thousand voices for ten thousand years
For ten thousand graves yawning unlocked and unlatched
Now ten thousand holes with rocks on their backs
Ten thousand tombs gaping wide singing the praise
Of ten thousand bodies unlaced and unlaid
As the ten thousand highways unfold their doors
For the ten thousand standing on Nineveh's shores
Where the blood of a husband silences wars
For the girl who rises to meet him
And she sings
World, I have overcome you
World, I have overcome you
World, I have overcome
By my song and the blood of a son
Ten thousand rivers
Run red like my veins
Where the bones of men hum
Like a rattling cage
For sinew to cling to
And wind to remain
In ten thousand lungs
For ten thousand days
Breathing like a choir
Of holes in the ground
Where the cynical have lain
Where the cynical go down
Save the gravity of time
Lets go of her drowned
Like ten thousand sparrows
Unlocked and unwound
As the ten thousand highways unfold their doors
For the ten thousand standing on Nineveh's shores
Where the blood of a husband silences wars
For the girl who rises to meet him
And she sings
World, I have overcome you
World, I have overcome you
World, I have overcome
