How easy is it for a disease to be passed from one person to another? That's what the reproductive number, R0 (pronounced "R-naught") can tell us. In this video, I will explain what happens when the R0 values are less than, equal to, or greater than 1. Next, I will compare R0 values for many diseases with which you are familiar, and I'll finish by explaining the three factors that determine the value for R0 for any given disease - as well as to describe the challenges that epidemiologists have when calculating it.

For example, airborne illnesses are transmitted the fastest and easiest. Therefore, they tend to have a higher R0 value than those spread through direct contact
Countries have been trying to find out the R0 value of COVID-19 as a metric to find out the transmission rate of the virus
But the R0 value is not a constant number
The estimates can vary by location, depending on factors such as how often people come into contact with each other and the efforts taken to reduce viral spread
Preliminary studies estimated a global R0 value for COVID-19 to be between 2 and 3.This means each infected person has spread the virus to an average of 2 to 3 people
But some recent studies suggest COVID-19 has an even higher R0 value
According to Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, between April 13 and May 10, the R0 value of COVID-19 in India remained steady at 1.29
