In our pilot episode we look at the new Ridley Scott film "THE MARTIAN" starring Matt Damon.
How accurate was the science? We examine every scientific subject including Getting Your Ass to Mars, Martian Weather & Gravity, Rover Technology, Mark Watney as the MacGyver of Mars, and the film's portrayal of NASA astronauts and scientists.
We went to the World Premiere of the film at the Toronto International Film Festival and talked to Director RIDLEY SCOTT, Author ANDY WEIR, Screenwriter DREW GODDARD, and stars MATT DAMON, JEFF DANIELS and MACKENZIE DAVIS.
We also visited NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and got their take on the film, including interviews Astronaut DREW FEUSTEL, Director of Planetary Science JIM GREEN, and Mars Researchers CARRIE BRIDGE, MATTHEW HEVERLY and KATIE STACK-MORGAN.

As an adjective, the term Martian is used to describe anything pertaining to the planet Mars.
However, a Martian is more usually a hypothetical or fictional native inhabitant of the planet Mars.[citation needed] Historically, life on Mars has often been hypothesized, although there is currently no solid evidence of life there at present. Some scientists have theorized that there is evidence of fossilized microbes in the meteorite ALH84001.
The idea of intelligent Martians was popularized by Percival Lowell and in fiction, especially by Edgar Rice Burroughs's John Carter (Barsoom) series, H.G. Wells's The War of the Worlds and Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles. Despite the observation by Alfred Wallace that Mars's atmosphere was too thin to support an Earth-like ecology, various depictions of a Martian civilization were popular throughout the 20th century. The first pictures of Mars returned by space probes dashed hopes of contacting Martians, although claims of past Martian civilizations have continued into the 21st century (see Cydonia for one such claim).

Neil deGrasse Tyson (
/ˈniːəl dəˈɡræs ˈtaɪsən/ born October 5, 1958) is an American astrophysicist and science communicator. He is currently the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space, and a research associate in the department of astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History. Since 2006 he has hosted the educational science television show NOVA scienceNOW on PBS, and has been a frequent guest on The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Real Time with Bill Maher, and Jeopardy!. It was announced on August 5, 2011, that Tyson will be hosting a new sequel to Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage television series.
Tyson was born as the second of three children in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, but was raised in the Bronx. His mother, Sunchita Feliciano Tyson, was a gerontologist and his father, Cyril deGrasse Tyson, was a sociologist, human resource commissioner for the New York City mayor, John Lindsay, and was the first Director of HARYOU. Tyson attended the Bronx High School of Science (1972–1976, astrophysics emphasis) where he was captain of the wrestling team and was editor-in-chief of the school's Physical Science Journal. Tyson had an abiding interest in astronomy from the age of eleven, following his visit to the Hayden Planetarium at age nine. Tyson recalls that "so strong was that imprint [of the night sky] that I'm certain that I had no choice in the matter, that in fact, the universe called me." He obsessively studied astronomy in his teens, and eventually even gained some fame in the astronomy community by giving lectures on the subject at the age of fifteen.

Matthew Paige "Matt" Damon (born October 8, 1970) is an American actor, screenwriter, and philanthropist whose career was launched following the success of the film Good Will Hunting (1997) from a screenplay he co-wrote with friend Ben Affleck. The pair won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and a Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay for their work. Damon alone received multiple Best Actor nominations, including an Academy Award for his lead performance in the film.
Damon has since starred in commercially successful films such as Saving Private Ryan (1998), the Ocean's trilogy, and the Bourne series, while also gaining critical acclaim for his performances in dramas such as Syriana (2005), The Good Shepherd (2006), and The Departed (2006). He garnered a Golden Globe nomination for portraying the title character in The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in Invictus (2009). He is one of the top 40 highest grossing actors of all time. In 2007, Damon received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was named Sexiest Man Alive by People magazine. How accurate was the science? We examine every scientific subject including Getting Your Ass to Mars, Martian Weather & Gravity, Rover Technology, Mark Watney as the MacGyver of Mars, and the film's portrayal of NASA astronauts and scientists.
We went to the World Premiere of the film at the Toronto International Film Festival and talked to Director RIDLEY SCOTT, Author ANDY WEIR, Screenwriter DREW GODDARD, and stars MATT DAMON, JEFF DANIELS and MACKENZIE DAVIS.
We also visited NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and got their take on the film, including interviews Astronaut DREW FEUSTEL, Director of Planetary Science JIM GREEN, and Mars Researchers CARRIE BRIDGE, MATTHEW HEVERLY and KATIE STACK-MORGAN.

Pressing questions that keep me awake when I’m trying to take a nap.. Have these politicians who want to double the minimum wage to $15 an hour really thought this through, or are they just trying to buy votes?. The real problem with this is seldom addressed. To wit. The experienced worker now making $15 will also expect a raise to at least $25 ... But why haven’t we spotted any Martians driving SUVs? ... What does that tell us? ... ....

He plays the grim and introspective William Stanaforth, who has volunteered for either a suicide mission or the greatest act of blind faith ever ... Oh, and he'll never return home to Earth ... ....

I have a reasonably decent PC for video editing and so decided to get the Oculus Rift when it went up for pre-order in January (I’d also been following the Rift’s progress obsessively for years). Now months later it’s finally arrived, and there’s no doubt it’s the future. Perhaps the future of movies too ... The likes of The Martian and The Conjuring have already had VR experiences made to accompany them ... ....
