Before their third headline appearance at Glastonbury, Matt Bellamy of Muse spoke about his desire to strip back the production and remind everyone that Muse are a rock band who can really rock. Well, they certainly did the latter but if this is his idea of stripped back he'd be the best dressed man at a nudist colony. Although this production was inevitably toned down from Muse's spectacular hi-tech indoor arena show, it wasn't exactly back to basics. No budget could buy you the spectacular setting of a gorgeous star and moonlit night at Worthy farm, where the Pyramid stage arises amid a vast sea of people. But the audience is Glastonbury's real special effect. With their flares and flags, their sheer size spreading up the hillside, and air of participatory singalong enthusiasm they lend a character that no hi-tech effect could match. And with darkness descending , Muse didn't exactly stint on the lights, LED screens, confetti and fireworks. But for all their science fictional themes and integration of digital electronica and techno influences into the power trio at format, at heart Muse are an old fashioned heavy rock band who can really really play. Really. Bellamy is a virtuoso electric guitarist with a fluid touch, daring imagination and axe hero swagger. He incorporates classical motifs into his riffs and leads, sometimes soloing like a wild baroque organist. And he plays the piano flamboyantly well too, and sings like a choir boy crossed with Freddie Mercury. He is one of the most copiously talented band leaders since Prince, and while Muse didn't pay tribute to the Minneapolis wonder their debt to him was clear in a slick, sexy performance of Supermassive Black Hole. Bellamy is more than ably supported by rhythm section Dominic Howard and Chris Wolstenholme, who offered up a techno-influenced drum and bass solo to show they could make a monumental noise without their band leader. They wound down near the end with apocalyptic ballad The Globalist serenading the destruction of "the great nation we were." But despite the overtly political themes of their current album Drones, Bellamy made no mention of the historic events of the day. I suspect that this is because the conspiracy theorist and fan of small-is-better, city state politics was one of the few at Glastonbury who always favoured Brexit. But set closer Knights of Cydonia's motif of "you and I must fight for our rights" had Glastonbury punching the air and roaring. Whatever your convictions, Muse's fantastic full tilt performance made sure that this strange day ended on a blazing high note for everyone, another reminder that live music at it's best can be a particularly stirring demonstration of the power of community and togetherness.
