Vårdö

Vårdö is an island municipality of Åland, an autonomous territory of Finland.

The municipality has a population of 442 (30 June 2015) and covers an area of 572.66 square kilometres (221.11 sq mi) of which 471.16 km² (181.92 sq mi) is water. The population density is 4.35 inhabitants per square kilometre (11.3/sq mi).

The municipality is unilingually Swedish.

Two notable Finnish authors, Sally Salminen and Anni Blomqvist, were born in Vårdö. Blomqvist spent her whole life on the small Vårdö island of Simskäla.

Chirpăr

Chirpăr (German: Kirchberg; Hungarian: Kürpöd) is a commune located in Sibiu County, Romania. It is composed of four villages: Chirpăr, Săsăuş (Sachsenhausen; Szászház), Vărd (Werd; Vérd) and Veseud (Zied; Vessződ). Chirpăr and Veseud villages have fortified churches.

Architecture

The village church was erected by the local Transylvanian Saxon community in the 12th century. It was initially built as a Romanesque basilica, made of stone.

History

In 1910 the Agnita to Sibiu railway line was completed with at station at Vărd however the line was closed in 2001. An active restoration group has since been formed aiming to restore the entire line to working condition.
