Tey was the wife of Kheperkheprure Ay (occasionally "Aya"), who was the penultimate pharaoh of Ancient Egypt's 18th dynasty. She was also the wetnurse of Queen Nefertiti.

Her husband, Ay filled an important role in the courts of several pharaohs – Amenhotep III, Akhenaten and Tutankhamen – before ascending the throne himself, as the male line of the royal family became extinct. He is believed to be connected to the royal family; he was likely a brother of Queen Tiye (wife of Amenhotep III), the father of Nefertiti (wife of Akhenaten) and a grandfather of Ankhesenamen (wife of Tutankhamen).

Family

On inscriptions from the Amarna period Tey is called “nurse of the Great Royal Wife”. This indicates that even if Ay was Nefertiti's father, as he is usually believed to be, Tey was not her mother; according to this theory she was possibly the second wife of Ay after Nefertiti's mother died. It has been proposed that Mutbenret was their daughter and later married Horemheb, Ay's successor on the throne. It is also possible that Ay's intended successor, Nakhtmin, was his son, possibly by Tey.

Tey may have had a sister called Mutemnub. A dignitary named Ay is called second priest of Amun, high priest of Mut and Steward of Queen Tey on a statue now in the Brooklyn Museum. This man's parents are recorded on the statue as Mutemnub and Nakhtmin. Mutemnub is said to be a sister of Queen Tey, and the inscription is usually interpreted to mean that she was the sister of Tey, wife of Ay.

Amarna

Tey is depicted in her husband's unused Amarna tomb. On the North Wall, East Side a reward scene is depicted. Aye and Tey are shown before the window of appearances. Akhenaten is shown in a Khepresh crown and Nefertiti in her well-known blue crown (in this case decorated with three uraei). Meritaten, Meketaten and Ankhesenpaaten are shown in the window of appearances as well. The eldest two seem to be throwing rewards to Aye and Tey, while Ankhesenpaaten stands on the pillow before Nefertiti and is caressing her chin.

Tey is also mentioned on a wooden box. The box is inscribed for The true scribe of the king whom he loves, troop commander, overseer of cavalry, and Father of the God, Ay. And the text mentions: The much-valued one, the sole one (unique) of Re, appreciated by the Great Royal Wife, the mistress of the house, Tiy.

Queen of Egypt

When Ay took the throne after the death of Tutankhamen, Tey became his Great Royal Wife. Queen Tey also held the titles Hereditary Princess (''iryt-p`t''), Great of Praises (''wrt-hzwt''), Lady of The Two Lands (''nbt-t3wy''), Great King’s Wife, his beloved (''hmt-niswt-wrt meryt.f''), and Mistress of Upper and Lower Egypt (''hnwt-Shm’w T3-mhw'').

Queen Tey is depicted in the tomb of Ay (WV23) in the Valley of the Kings. She appears behind Ay in a scene where Ay appears to be pulling lotus flowers from a marsh. The images are rather severely damaged. Tey may have been buried with her husband in WV23, and fragments of female human bones found in the tomb may be Tey's.

Tey is also depicted in a rock chapel dedicated to fertility god Min in Akhmim.

Alemayehu Eshete () (also written Alèmayèhu Eshèté in French) is an Ethiopian Ethio-jazz singer active since the 1960s who primarily sings in Amharic. Eshete's talent was recognized by colonel Rètta Dèmèqè who invited the young singer to perform with Addis Ababa's famous Police Orchestra. Eshete had his first hit ("Seul") in 1961 before moving on to found the orchestra Alèm-Girma Band with Girma Bèyènè. Over the course of 15 years, Eshete released some 30 singles until the arrival of the communist Derg junta, which forced Eshete and many other artists into exile.

Alemayehu Eshete has since gained fame in Europe and the Americas with the release of Buda Musique's ''Ethiopiques'' series of compilations on compact disc. ''Ethiopiques Volume 9'' is devoted entirely to recordings of Eshete's earlier music, and ''Volume 22'' covers his career between 1972 and 1974. Other songs have also appeared on Volumes 3, 8, 10, and 13 or the series. In 2008 Eshete toured the United States with fellow Ethiopian singer Mahmoud Ahmed, backed by Boston's 10-piece Either/Orchestra.

Muhammad Owais Raza Qderi (Urdu, Arabic: , born 8 July 1970 in Karachi) is a Pakistani who has travelled widely as a ''Naat khawan'' (reciter of ''naat'').

Biography

AlHaaj Muhammad Owais Raza Qadri is the crownless king of present day Sana Khawans around the world and undoubtedly the most heartily loved, popular and legend of Sana Khawans, known for his melodious voice and unique style of expressing his great love and respect for the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He emerged with a revolutionary voice and unique style with a zeal to surpass his own targets and a performer par excellence. Today he is an ideal for millions of Ushaqan-e-Rasool across the globe. He is a legend at the age of 38, and the journey has just begun. There are millions of Owais Raza Qadri's fans worldwide who deeply admire and are inspired with him. They longed to know about the personal details which are still undiscovered and how he spent his daily life, so some information was collected about his daily routine. Further information will continue to be added day by day, Insha-Allah-o-Rabb-ul Aalameen. Muhammad Owais Raza Qadri was born on 17th. October 1969 in Pakistan. Owais Raza Qadri was married in 1994 and has four children: two daughters and two sons named Mohammad Anis Raza and Mohammad Afif Raza. He started reciting naats at the age of 8 only. He was inspired by AlHaaj Yousuf Ashrafi (late) who was his ideal Naat Khawan also. He did not take special naat classes but acquired the companionship of "Ushaqaan-e-Rasool". All naats are his favorites. Reciting the Kalaam of Imam-e-Ahle-sunnat, Alahazrat Shah Ahmed Raza Khan Sahib Barelvi is most liked by Owais Raza Qadri. His first album was released in 1983 and after that numerous albums have been released. He has traveled to many countries of the world spreading the message of Islam and love for Muhammad including England, Canada, Dubai, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, India, Hijaz-e-Muqaddas South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Malawi, Kenya, Maurtus, Botswana, Mapoto, Zambia, Suwaziland, Bangaladesh, Syria etc. Owais Qadri's services for the promotion of naats were recently acknowledged by the Government of Pakistan when he was given the award of Best Naat Khawan in 2007. As a token of respect, he was also weighed in silver by Barkati Foundation in 2008. There are no formalities for the bookings of Mehfil-e-Naat, however, privilege is given to areas where something could be done to promote Islam. Regarding his future plans, Owais Qadri states that he will continue reciting naats and work for getting people back to the path of Sala'at-o-Sunnat. Muhammad Owais Raza Qadri advises new naat khawans that Naat Khawani is Ibaadat and before reciting any naat essential knowledge should be collected about it and special care should be taken to ensure that it is not objectionable by Islamic Shariah. It is best to check all naats with a learned scholar. Furthermore, they should restrain from such acts which can be criticized by others. Addressing the young generation, Muhammad Owais Raza Qadri remarks that undoubtedly success lies within the fact that we must walk on the path guided to us by Allah and Muhammad, leave the way of strangers and always believe in death. Acquire adequate knowledge of Islam and recite at least one Ruku of the Quran (Kanzul Iman) with translation.

Career

Beginning in 1983, he has released several albums, despite having taken no formal na'at classes. Qadri has traveled to England, Canada, Dubai, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, India, Hijaz-e-Muqaddas South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Malawi, Kenya, Maurtus, Botswana, Mapoto, Zambia, Suwaziland, Bangaladesh, Syria etc. to recite Anasheed .In vagra Bharuj India,more than 500,000 people attended one of his performances,In Hyderabad, India, more than 200,000 people attended one of his performances, creating the record for most number of attandees in a Mehfil-e-Na'at. In the course of his performances, he advises young people to acquire adequate knowledge of Islam and to recite at least one ruku of the Qur'an and its Kanzul Iman translation.

Awards

2007 - In recognition of his promotion of ''naats'' the Government of Pakistan recognized him as Best Naat Khawan for 2007.

2008 - The Barkati Foundation ceremonially weighed him in silver in recognition of his services for the promotion of na'ats.

Shahid Mahmood (Urdu: شاہد محمود) (born March 17, 1939, Lucknow, British India) is a former Pakistani cricketer who played in one Test in 1962. He is known for being the first man from Pakistan to take all ten wickets in a first class innings. He again replicated the feat some years later.

Noorjehan or Noorjehan (Punjabi, }}) was the adopted stage name for Allah Wasai (September 21, 1926 – December 23, 2000) who was a legendary singer and actress in British India and Pakistan. Her career spanned seven decades. She was renowned as one of the greatest and most influential singers of her time in South Asia and was given the honorific title of Malika-e-Tarannum (}}, ). Along with Ahmed Rushdi, she holds the highest record of film songs in the history of Pakistani cinema. She is also considered to be the first female Pakistani film director.

In 1957, Jehan was awarded the President's Award for her acting and singing capabilities.

Early life

Noor Jehan (Gurmukhi: ਨੂਰ ਜਹਾਂ, Shahmukhi: ‏ ﻧﻮﺭ ﺟﮩﺎﮞ), born in Kasur, Punjab, British India was one of the eleven children of professional musicians Madad Ali and Fateh Bibi.

Career

Wasai began to sing at the age of five or six years old and showed a keen interest in a range of styles, including traditional folk and popular theatre. Realising her potential for singing, her mother sent her to receive early training in classical singing under Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan who was also a native of Kasur. He instructed her in the traditions of the Patiala Gharana of Hindustani classical music and the classical forms of ''thumri'', dhrupad, and khyal. At the age of nine, Wasai drew the attention of Punjabi musician Ghulam Ahmed Chishti, who would later introduce her to stage in Lahore. He composed some ghazals, naats and folk songs for her to perform, although she was more keen in breaking into acting or playback singing. Once her vocational training finished, Wasai pursued a career in singing alongside her sisters in Lahore and would usually take part in the live song and dance performances prior to screenings of films in film theatres.

The family moved to Calcutta (now Kolkata) in hope of developing the movie careers of Wasai and her sisters. During their stay in Calcutta, the renowned singer Mukhtar Begum, encouraged Wasai and her two older sisters to join film companies and recommended them to various producers. She also recommended them to her husband, Agha Hashar Kashmiri, who owned a ''maidan theatre'' (a tented theatre to accommodate large audiences). It was here that Wasai received the stage name Baby Noor Jehan. Her older sisters were offered jobs with one of the Seth Sukh Karnani companies, Indira Movietone and they went on to be known as the ''Punjab Mail''. Wasai would later adopt Mukhtar Begum's way of performance and sari attire.

In 1935, K.D. Mehra directed ''Pind di Kuri'' in which Jehan acted along with her sisters. She next acted in a film called ''Missar Ka Sitara'' (1936) by the same company and sang in it for music composer, Damodar Sharma. Baby Noor Jehan also played the child role of Heer in the film ''Heer-Sayyal'' (1937). After a few years in Calcutta, Noor Jehan returned to Lahore in 1938. In 1939, Ghulam Haider composed songs for Jehan which led to her early popularity. She then recorded her first song ''Shala Jawaniyan Mane'' for Dalsukh M. Pancholi's movie ''Gul Bakavli''.

Prior to ''Khandaan'' Jehan was cast as a child artist. It was in 1942 that she played the main lead opposite Pran. ''Khandaan'''s success saw her shifting to Bombay (now Mumbai), where she shared melodies with Shanta Apte in ''Duhai'' (1943). It was in this film that Noor Jehan lent her voice for the second time, to another actress named Husn Bano. In 1945 Jehan played the lead role, alongside Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, in the movie ''Bari Maa''.

In 1945, she achieved a milestone, when she sung a Qawwali with Zohrabai Ambalewali and Amirbai Karnataki which was "Aahen Na Bhareen Shikave Na Kiye". This was the first ever Qawwali recorded in female voices in South Asian films.

Noor Jehan's (Deepa govindarajan) last film in India was ''Mirza Sahibaan'' (1947) which starred Prithviraj Kapoor's brother Trilok Kapoor. Noor Jehan sang 127 songs in Indian films and the number of talking films she made from 1932 to 1947 was 69. The number of silents was 12. Fifty-five of her films were made in Bombay, eight in Calcutta, five in Lahore and one in Rangoon (now Yangon), Burma.

Acting career in Pakistan

After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, Jehan decided to move to Pakistan along with her husband Shaukat Hussain Rizvi. She left Bombay and settled in Karachi with her family.

Three years after settling in Pakistan, Noor Jehan starred in her first film in Pakistan, ''Chan wey'' (1951), opposite Santosh Kumar, which was also her first Punjabi film as a heroine. Shaukat and Noor Jehan directed this film together making Noor Jehan Pakistan's first female director. Noor Jehan's second film in Pakistan was ''Dopatta'' (1952) which turned out to be an even bigger success than ''Chan wey'' (1951).

Her penultimate film as an actress/singer was ''Mirza Ghalib'' (1961). This contributed to the strengthening of her iconic stature. She gained another audience for herself. Her rendition of Faiz Ahmed Faiz's ''Mujh se pehli si mohabbat mere mehboob naj maang'' is a unique example of ''tarranum'', reciting poetry as a song. Noor Jehan last starred in ''Baaji'' in 1963, though not in a leading role. Noor Jehan bade farewell to acting in 1963 after a career of 33 years (1930 to 1963). The pressure of being a mother of six children and the demanding wife of a hero (Ejaz Durrani) forced her to give up her career. Noor Jehan made 14 films in Pakistan, ten in Urdu, four in Punjabi.

Noor Jehan as a playback singer

After quitting acting she took up playback singing. She made her debut as a playback singer in 1960 with the film ''Salma''. Her first initial playback for a Pakistani film was for ''Jan-e-Bahar'' (1958), in which she sang the song ''Kaisa Naseeb Layi Thi'', picturised on Musarrat Nazir. She received many awards, including the highest Pakistani honour in entertainment, ''Tamgha-e-Imtiaz'' (''The Pride of Performance'') in 1966, Pakistan's top civil award. She sang a large number of duets with Ahmed Rushdi, Mehdi Hassan, Masood Rana and Mujeeb Aalam.

She had a great understanding and friendship with many great singers of Asia, for example with the late great Alam Lohar and many more singers also.

In the 1990s Jehan also sang for then débutante actresses Neeli and Reema. For this very reason, Sabiha Khanum affectionately called her ''Sadabahar'' (evergreen). Her popularity was further boosted with her patriotic songs during the 1965 war between Pakistan and India.

Jehan visited India in 1982 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Indian talkie movies, where she met Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in New Delhi and was received by Dilip Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar in Mumbai.

Last years and death

In 1986, on a tour of North America, Jehan suffered from chest pains and was diagnosed with angina pectoris after which she underwent a surgery to install a pacemaker. In 2000, Jehan was hospitalised in Karachi and suffered a heart attack. On Saturday afternoon, December 23, 2000, Noor Jehan breathed her last, as a result of heart failure. Her funeral took place at Jamia Masjid Sultan, Karachi and she was buried at the Gizri Graveyard near the Saudi Consulate in Karachi.
