These tips cover what a mix engineer needs to achieve a great recording mix for an artist. There are several things that we as mix engineers need in order to achieve a decent mix.
1. The quality of the recording is the most important
2. Music and vocals need to be tracked out individually, with no plug-in's on them
3. No mp3 files. Professional standard format files such as .wav or .aiff files of 24bit/ 44.1 kHz or higher.

Full Sail University Recording Arts graduate/Grammy-winning Mix Engineer Leslie Brathwaite returned to campus in 2011 for the school's Hall of Fame ceremony. During his visit, he met with five selected Recording Arts students for an intimate conversation inside the flagship recording studio the Audio Temple. In this conversation, the Hall of Fame grad answers questions about his twenty years in the music business, gives advice about landing internships (and keeping the job once you're in there), and offers his insight to the future of the music industry.
After graduating from Full Sail's Recording Arts program, Leslie relocated to Atlanta and soon developed a working relationship with acclaimed producer Dallas Austin, with whom he'd assist on such '90s classics as Boyz II Men's 'II' and Outkast's 'Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik.'
Since that breakthrough, Leslie's credits have spanned the world of rap and R&B;, and include collaborations with artists such as Jay Z, Mary J. Blige, Ludacris, Akon, Madonna, T.I., Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac, Ciara, and Young Jeezy. In addition to chart success, he has also been recognized with multiple Grammy statues, including nods for his work on the Monica/Brandy single "The Boy Is Mine," as well as TLC's multiplatinum album 'Fanmail.'

Mixing engineer
A mix engineer or mixing engineer is a person responsible for combining ("mixing") the different sonic elements of a piece of recorded music (vocals, instruments, effects etc.) into a final version of a song (also known as "final mix" or "mixdown"). He or she mixes the elements of a recorded piece together to achieve a good balance of volume, while at the same time deciding other properties such as pan positioning, effects, and so on.
The best mixing professionals typically have many years of experience and training with audio equipment, which has enabled them to master their craft. A mixing engineer occupies a space between artist and scientist, using their skill at assessing the harmonic structure of sound to enable them to fashion highly appealing timbres. Their work is found in all modern music, but many artists now mix and produce their own music with a digital audio workstation and a computer.
A more technical definition: an audio engineer in sound recording, audio editing and sound systems who balances the relative volume and frequency content of a number of sound sources. Typically, these sound sources are the different musical instruments in a band or vocalists, the sections of an orchestra and so on.

Jay Z
Shawn Corey Carter (born December 4, 1969), known by his stage name Jay Z (formerly Jay-Z), is an American rapper, record producer, entrepreneur, and investor. He is one of the most financially successful hip hop artists and entrepreneurs in America. In 2014, Forbes estimated Jay Z's net worth at nearly $520 million. He is one of the world's best-selling artists of all time, having sold more than 100 million records, while receiving 21 Grammy Awards for his musical work, and numerous additional nominations. Consistently ranked as one of the greatest rappers ever, he was ranked number one by MTV in their list of The Greatest MCs of All-Time in 2006. On December 11, 2009, Jay Z was ranked as the tenth-most successful artist of the 2000s by Billboard as well as the fifth top solo male artist and fourth top rapper behind Eminem, Nelly, and 50 Cent. He was also ranked the 88th greatest artist of all time by Rolling Stone.
