The Twilight Samurai
The Twilight Samurai or Tasogare Seibei (たそがれ清兵衛, literally "Twilight Seibei") is a 2002 Japanese film directed by Yoji Yamada. Set in mid-19th century Japan, a few years before the Meiji Restoration, it follows the life of Seibei Iguchi, a low-ranking samurai employed as a bureaucrat. Poor, but not destitute, he still manages to lead a content and happy life with his daughters and senile mother. Through an unfortunate turn of events, the turbulent times conspire against him.
The Twilight Samurai was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 76th Academy Awards, Japan's first in twenty two years, losing to the French Canadian (Québec) film Les Invasions Barbares. The Twilight Samurai also won an unprecedented 12 Japanese Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay.
The film was inspired by the short story "The Bamboo Sword" by Shuhei Fujisawa.
Plot
At the start of the film, the main character, Iguchi Seibei, becomes a widower when his wife succumbs to tuberculosis. His wife receives a grand funeral, more than what a low-ranking samurai such as Seibei could afford. Seibei works in the grain warehouse, accounting for stores inventory for the samurai clan. His samurai colleagues mock him behind his back with the nickname Tasogare (Twilight). When evening approaches, Seibei rushes home to look after his senile elderly mother and two young daughters, Kayano and Ito, instead of bonding with his supervisor and other samurai colleagues over customary nights of dinner, geisha entertainment, and sake drinking. Even though he is a samurai, Seibei neglects his appearance, failing to bathe and being shabbily dressed. The well-being of his young daughters and medicine for his mother take priority over new clothes or the monthly bath fee and his daughters say they are both happy, even without a mother.

Yoji Yamada
Yoji Yamada (山田 洋次, Yamada Yōji, born September 13, 1931 in Toyonaka, Osaka) is a Japanese film director best known for his Otoko wa Tsurai yo series of films and his Samurai Trilogy (The Twilight Samurai, The Hidden Blade and Love and Honor).
He was born in Osaka. But because of the work of his father, who was an engineer for the South Manchuria Railway, from the age of 2 he was brought up in Dalian, China. Following the end of World War II, he came back to Japan and subsequently he lived in Yamagata Prefecture.
After receiving his degree from Tokyo University in 1954, he entered Shochiku and worked under Yoshitaro Nomura as a scriptwriter or as an assistant director.
He has won many awards throughout his lengthy career and is well respected in Japan and by critics throughout the world. He wrote his first screenplay in 1958, and directed his first movie in 1961. Yamada continues to make movies to this day.
He once served as president of the Directors Guild of Japan, and is currently a guest professor of Ritsumeikan University.

Rie Miyazawa
Rie Miyazawa (宮沢 りえ, Miyazawa Rie, born on April 6, 1973) is a Japanese actress and former fashion model. She has done glamour modeling too, having released four photobooks. She is also well known as former fiancé of sumo wrestler Takanohana, to whom she was engaged for 2 months, and for her years of fighting anorexia nervosa.
Life and career
Rie Miyazawa was born in Tokyo and raised by her mother. Since her debut at age 11 in an advertisement for Kit Kat, she has many films, television shows, commercials, stage appearances and photo books to her credit. She starred in the children's comedy Bokura no Nanokakan Sensō (Seven Days' War) and Tokyo Elevator Girl. Miyazawa made her debut as a singer on 15 September 1989.
She gained notoriety in 1991 with the publication of a Fine art nude photography book, Santa Fe, and even more publicity in 1992 by her engagement to sumo star Takanohana. The engagement was called off in 1993. In September 1994 she cut her wrists with a broken glass in what she described as an "accident". The tabloids focused on Miyazawa's drinking session, fights with her mother, and her escape to a nearby hotel as signs of a failed suicide attempt. Miyazawa, however, continued to pursue her career as an actress, including a performance in Kon Ichikawa's movie Chushingura that year. But the following February she pulled out of the drama Kura and in November backed out of the musical Kyote.

Shuzo still enjoys driving his own car. His oldest son Konosuke (Masahiko Nishimura) and his wife Fumie (Yui Natsukawa) notice a dent on Shuzo’s car. They worry that Shuzo is now too old to safely drive. They make a plan to have Shuzo return his driver's license. Shuzo's daughter Taizo (Shozo Hayashiya) and her husband Shigeko (Tomoko Nakajima) and Shuzo's youngest son Shota (Satoshi Tsumabuki) and his girlfriend Noriko (Yu Aoi) are also worried about Shuzo’s driving. Yet, Shuzo is too stubborn to quit.
One day, while Shuzo is driving with bar owner Kayo (Jun Fubuki), he happens to meet Ginnpei Maruta (Nenji Kobayashi). They graduated from the same school in their home town of Hiroshima. For the first time in 40 years, Shuzo and Ginnpei drink alcohol together at Kayo’s bar. Shuzo then lets Ginnpei stay at his house. Soon, a new disturbance arises at the Hirata family.

One of Japan's early environmentalist Minagata Kumagusu (1867-1941) was strongly opposing this merger, worrying that the consolidation would ruin not only historical buildings and antiquities, but by cutting trees, would also damage the natural surroundings and the scenery around them (plus the microorganisms living there - Minagata was a slime mold pioneer researcher). After protest letters (Minagata was himself arrested during the protests) and the failure of this campaign, in 1920s these measures stopped but lots of displacement and stories about curses due to the move of local deities ensued.

There were some inappropriate rumors started. Stating that Falcaro Sensei was not trained in advanced waza and that he does not posses the ability to apply advanced skills. This video addresses the rumors and displays proof that they are unfounded. Many of these methods are considered very advanced. Falcaro Sensei is not in the habit of showing them to the public. We find it strange that, in a world of information technology, if the information is not provided / accessible quickly and easily the perception is that technology does not exist. There were some inappropriate rumors started. Stating that Falcaro Sensei was not trained in advanced waza and that he does not posses the ability to apply advanced skills. This video addresses the rumors and displays proof that they are unfounded.
Many of these methods are considered very advanced. Falcaro Sensei is not in the habit of showing them to the public. We find it strange that, in a world of information technology, if the information is not provided / accessible quickly and easily the perception is that technology does not exist.
