Having filmed this vlog, I actually abandoned it when first looking back at the footage. It didn't feel as though enough was said or shown. Then I made a full U-turn and recovered it into what it is today!

Street photography
Street photography is photography that features the chance encounters and random accidents within public places. Street photography does not necessitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment. Though people usually feature directly, street photography might be absent of people and can be of an object or environment where the image projects a decidedly human character in facsimile or aesthetic.
Framing and timing can be key aspects of the craft with the aim of some street photography being to create images at a decisive or poignant moment. Street photography can focus on emotions displayed, thereby also recording people's history from an emotional point of view. Similarly, Social documentary photographers document people and their behavior in public places for the purpose of recording people's history and other purposes; photojournalists work in public places, capturing newsworthy events, which may include people and property visible from public places; services like Google Street View also record the public place at a massive scale.

What are the best technical settings for street photography? Should you shoot fully-manual? Should you use "P" (program) mode? Should you zone focus? There is no "best" settings in street photography--just use what best works for you. For me, that means shooting in "P" (program) mode where my camera automatically chooses the aperture and shutter speed. I keep my ISO 1600-3200 (for a fast shutter speed), center-point autofocus, and I focus on composition, overcoming my fears, and interacting with others when shooting. http://erickimphotography.com/blog

While Street Photography can be practiced anywhere, New York City in particular, is a place that lends itself to the art (afterall, our sidewalks are 18% grey!) But street shooting does require a certain discipline. In this class, photographer Mel DiGiacomo will discuss how to know the light, how to learn the vocabulary of your lenses, and how to put aside the technical aspects and keep thinking to a minimum to keep your shooting instinctual. Whether you are shooting people or things, Mel will get you thinking in different ways to help stretch your photography muscles.

Mastering composition to get more keepers is the best thing to do in street photography. If you shoot film, you'll save lots of it. If you shoot digital, you'll save the headache of choosing the best photo of 60 which are identical.

In the video I'm using my Pivothead sunglasses to record the video, a Zoom H1 to record audio. The Leica R4 SLR camera, Summicron 50mm f/2, and Kodak Portra 160.
Note: None of the photos are cropped, which explains the black frame around each image (from the film). Also, none of the pictures are manipulated with cloning out distractions. Just simple processing is done, that's it. Sorry it's shaky. I wanted to use YouTube stabilization, but it made it worse.
It's said that most professionals get about one keeper per roll. That's a pretty horrible ratio if you ask me, but that's not saying all of my shots are keepers. I know they aren't all good. Heck, you might think they all suck, but that doesn't matter to me. What matters is that I'm always learning, and always pushing myself to get better at street photography by applying composition techniques...not the rule of thirds!
Hopefully this video teaches you that when you learn composition, you can discipline yourself. Practice control and wait for the shot that will be worthy of your collection. Babe Ruth didn't swing at every ball...he waited for the perfect pitch to hit his homeruns. Working the scene is like using a machine gun at target practice. You hope to get a bullseye, but wouldn't you rather be a sniper and nail it?
