Accompanying slides can be found at www.cs.caltech.edu Spin Transformations of Discrete Surfaces Keenan Crane, Ulrich Pinkall, Peter Schröder SIGGRAPH 2011 Abstract: We introduce a new method for computing conformal transformations of triangle meshes in R3. Conformal maps are desirable in digital geometry processing because they do not exhibit shear, and therefore preserve texture fidelity as well as the quality of the mesh itself. Traditional discretizations consider maps into the complex plane, which are useful only for problems such as surface parameterization and planar shape deformation where the target surface is flat. We instead consider maps into the quaternions, which allows us to work directly with surfaces sitting in R3. In particular, we introduce a quaternionic Dirac operator and use it to develop a novel integrability condition on conformal deformations. Our discretization of this condition results in a sparse linear system that is simple to build and can be used to efficiently edit surfaces by manipulating curvature and boundary data, as demonstrated via several mesh processing applications.

Creating Virtual 3D Statues from Photos
During the spring semester of 2012, the students of the class Digital 3D Geometry Processing (lgg.epfl.ch at the School of Computer and Communication Sciences (ic.epfl.ch) at EPFL (http created a virtual museum of 3D statues. The goal of the project was to explore the use of geometry processing algorithms for digital reconstruction and conservation of sculptural art. This artwork becomes accessible in a virtual exhibition that brings together statues located in and around Lausanne, Switzerland. The digital 3D models have been acquired by taking multiple photographs of each physical statue. Using a novel reconstruction software provided by the EPFL startup company Pix4D, these photographs are turned into digital 3D point clouds. Several algorithms and software tools are then used to clean and complete this data and extract a textured surface mesh suitable for display. The video shows the main stages of the class project work and the final virtual museum, created in a collective effort of the entire student team. In today's wolrd technology has become a staple for schools, just as important as reading, writing and arithmetic. Children live in a digital age where mobile devices are as necessary as groceries. A small but growing group of educators in the valley is trying to exploit twitter-like technology to enhance their classrooms. Technology is everywhere, touching almost every part of our lives, our communities, our homes. These days, it is also in our schools. A part of everyday learning in the classroom. McAllen Superintendent Dr. James Ponce says his district is doing something many across the nation have not done. The district secured mobile devicesfor all 25000 of it's students. They're using ipads and tools like facetime to revolutionize the student teacher learning experience. Children as young as 5 years old are thriving and loving the idea. By January 2012 more than 5 thousand Ipad2's and more than 4 hundred Ipod touch devices will be in the hands of both teachers and students. It's an initiative Dr. Ponce says is already increasing student academic achievement and closing the gap for at-risk children. He says the move into the digital world will not only make the students more competitive, but also increase the value of the community of McAllen. Mudbox 2012 - Local Mirror planes help to enforce model symmetry. Sculpt Tools, such as smooth are used to modify geometry quickly and easily by allowing users to simply "brush" edits onto their models. Mudbox 2012 - Keyboard hotkeys allow users to change sculpt tool characteristics such as size and magnitude. Keyboard hotkeys also allow for rapid manipulation of the model display. Sculpt tools such as Flatten enable users to quickly affect profound changes to model geometry. Freeze functionality ensures that areas of the model which are selected will remain unaffected by subsequent sculpt edits. 3ds Max 2012 - Mudbox 2012 can automatically export data directly to a 3ds Max 2012 scene.

Animation depicting Fuller's geometric explorations - Whitney Museum
Digital animation by Michelle Chang with Helen Han and Temple Simpson. This animation presents the geometry that is the basis of many of Fuller's key ideas and concepts. At the beginning, twelve spheres are packed as closely as possible around a single central sphere. As the spheres shrink and disappear, they generate a polyhedron in which all edges and all radii are of equal length. This shape is what Fuller called a vector equilibrium. One of the characteristics of a vector equilibrium is its ability to contract by folding in on itself. The animation demonstrates how this simple geometric shape can be transformed to create several complex polyhedra. Next, it produces a different version of a vector equilibrium that Fuller called tensegrity—short for a stable structure of tensional integrity. In the last part of the animation, a map of the entire globe is transferred onto the vector equilibrium, which unfolds to produce a flat map of the earth made from six squares and eight triangles. Unlike conventional world maps, Fuller's vector equilibrium map represents the world with minimal distortions to the relative size of the continents. Digital Rendering & Compositing Workflow Montage | Maya, Photoshop, Mari, Nuke
READ: This project was mostly a short rendering stress test for my new computer build. The set was modeled in Maya, textures were done in Photoshop & Mari, and the final images were rendered with Mental Ray and composited with Nuke. I spent a little over a week and a half on it including rendering. THE SYSTEM: CoolerMaster HAF 922 w/ Asus M4A88TD-V motherboard. AMD 1090T @ Stock 3.2Ghz on 6 physical cores. 16GB of DDR3 G.Skill RAM Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 w/ 2GB of video memory. WD 640GB main drive. 1500, 2000 (3.5 Terabytes) of storage/backup drives. Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I may run a dual boot with Linux (Fedora) later. Benchmark Scores after OS install and drivers: Maxon's CINEBENCH v11.5 CPU: 5.64 OpenGL: 38.94 FPS Unigine's Heaven - DirectX11 video card test: 1280x720 windowed. Everything on highest settings, anti-aliasing disabled. Tessellation on the "extreme" preset. (About half of maxed) Average FPS: 33.1 Scores: 829 MODELING: As you can see in the video the overall modeling is basic at best- I didn't even open up zBrush or Mudbox for sculpting detail or really do any kind of UV layouts. This is because I wanted to get to the rendering stage as quickly as possible. I payed little if no attention to scaling, units or generating any kind of reasonable detail here because I'm saving such intensive workloads for the much bigger, full-scale kind of projects.
