Every year, publications like Forbes release lists detailing the generosity of society’s richest philanthropists. But the raw numbers of their donations don’t tell the whole story of how ultra-wealthy charitable giving tends to work. We took that data and put it on a big chart that highlights exactly how much of each billionaire’s personal wealth is going toward charitable giving.
This video outlines how wealth inequality creates a distorted view of the generosity of America’s billionaires. We examine the causes their money goes to support, like education and public health. And we break down the actual methods they use to move massive amounts of donated money around, like foundations and secretive donor-advised funds.
Measuring wealth and philanthropic giving is difficult and subjective. We relied on Forbes’s specific methodology for our chart, but lists like the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s “The Philanthropy 50” use their own methods. https://www.philanthropy.com/article/the-philanthropy-50/#id=browse_2022
Correction: In a previous version of this video, the equation at 1:05 was incorrectly flipped. We've updated the animation.
Here is the original Forbes list we mention in the video:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbeswealthteam/2023/01/23/americas-top-givers-2023-the-25-most-philanthropic-billionaires/?sh=320dd0692e9e
If you’re wondering why Elon Musk isn’t on the Forbes list despite a $5.7 billion donation of Tesla shares in 2021, it’s probably because it was speculated that the money went to a donor-advised fund:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/elizahaverstock/2022/02/15/elon-musk-reports-donating-57-billion-to-charity-but-there-is-no-trace-of-that-gift-yet/?sh=4d2dd8fd2782
They also do their own guide on “giving scores”:

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- Local philanthropist Lois Rosenthal has passed away. The longtime supporter of the arts died Sunday at the age of 75.

Covington's Carnegie Center | Kentucky Life | KET
The city of Covington received a total of $75,000 from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie for the 1904 construction of a library and performance hall. That performance hall is one of the unique features about this Kentucky Carnegie library; in later years, Carnegie refused to donate funds for anything but library space.
As part of our ongoing series on the history of the original Carnegie libraries of Kentucky and their current uses, we take a tour of the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center, the largest arts venue in Northern Kentucky.

Did you know this Ohio State Buckeye designed more than 600 buildings?
🚌
Austin Eldon Knowlton was a trained architect who spent most of his career in construction. His company designed, financed, and built more than 160 college and university buildings on every central college campus in Ohio and more than 200 elementary and secondary school buildings. His companies have also constructed more than 35 major hospitals and 43 United States Post Offices. In his lifetime, he designed more than 600 buildings.
He rejoined his father's firm after graduation. After his father's retirement from the business, "AE" and "CE" founded the Knowlton Construction Company in 1937. Although Dutch suffered from dyslexia, he could add long columns of numbers in his head and used a slide rule to calculate construction bids.[citation needed]
A. E. "Dutch" Knowlton's company specialized in educational, health care, and commercial buildings. At his alma mater alone, he designed the Fawcett Center, Hitchcock Hall, Houck House, Jones Graduate Tower, the School of Allied Medical Professions, Wilce Health Center, Drake Union, and Larkins Hall addition (the latter demolished 2005 to make way for a new Recreation and Physical Activities Center).[citation needed]
In 1967, Knowlton was the majority shareholder with 30% of the Cincinnati Bengals and Paul Brown and others and later served as chairman. That same year, Knowlton gained a majority interest in the Cincinnati Reds, purchasing 15% from William O. DeWitt, Jr. to total 29%. He raised championship American Saddlebred horses at Emerald Farms. He was a Trustee of the Little Brown Jug Society, which runs the Triple Crown of Harness Racing for Pacers in Delaware, Ohio. He was also a Little Brown Jug Society trustee for harness racing in Delaware, Ohio.
In 1981, Knowlton established The Austin E. Knowlton Foundation to promote and advance higher education. The Foundation has made many charitable gifts, including funding the Knowlton Library of the Logan County District Library in memory of his parents and The Ohio State University.
In 1994, Ohio State University renamed its School of Architecture the "Austin E. Knowlton School of Architecture." University President E. Gordon Gee praised the gift from Knowlton that made it possible for OSU to provide the finest architectural education possible. A new building designed by the firm of Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects of Atlanta, Georgia, Knowlton Hall, opened for the School of Architecture in the fall of 2004. In 1995, Ohio State presented an Honorary Doctorate of Architecture to A. E. Knowlton.

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- Local philanthropist Lois Rosenthal has passed away. The longtime supporter of the arts died Sunday at the age of 75.
She and her husband, Richard, donated millions of dollars to the Cincinnati Art Museum in 2002. That donation allowed the museum to stop charging admission to guests.
She also supported the Cincinnati Cooks. That's a program that helps disadvantage people get on their feet by learning to work in food service. It's one of the many things the Rosenthals did to support the Freestore Foodbank.
The Rosenthal Foundation also supports the Ohio Innocence Project, the Contemporary Arts Center and the Uptown Arts Program.

Mr. Roger Grein is successful businessman, internationally recognized softball coach, one of Cincinnati's great Philanthropy Ambassadors, and founder of Magnified Giving. An entrepreneur since age seven, Roger made his first, significant philanthropic contribution as a young teenager and has been freely giving of his time, talent and treasure for the past sixty years. As the founder and coach of Jake Sweeney girls softball team, his teams won regional, state, national and world championships. We hope you enjoy Roger's amazing and inspirational story.
An important aspect of Mr. Grein’s story is his legacy of philanthropy and inspiring service through Magnified Giving, which he founded in 2008, with the mission to educate, inspire, and engage students in life-long philanthropy. The vision of Magnified Giving is for every high school student in America, beginning in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, to someday have an opportunity to learn firsthand how to be generous and wise philanthropists through hands-on experience. Participating school groups are challenged to determine how they want to invest more than $1000 in a nonprofit. Since 2008, the organization has educated over 25,000 young philanthropists in 97 schools in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

Haile, Jr./U.S. Bank Foundation, maintaining a focus on strengthening Cincinnati’s distinctive urban neighborhoods, building a talented regional workforce, and encouraging a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation. Eric also oversees People’s Liberty (peoplesliberty.org), the foundation’s 8,000 square foot philanthropic lab, as an experimental platform for innovative grant making.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

How did we get here… from here?
We officially opened in March 1994 with 4 volunteer doctors, 1 nurse and 12 beds.
The Hospital of the Protestant Episcopal Church served 38 children, without fee, in its first year.
“A child is not a little man”
Benjamin Knox Rachford, MD
Influenced by Frederick Forchheimer, MD, Benjamin Knox Rachford, MD, was the first physician in Cincinnati to devote his practice to children and was appointed the first chair of Pediatrics at UC College of Medicine in 1901.
Our official affiliation with UC’s College of Medicine began in 1926. That was also the year Cincinnati Children’s residency program was accredited.
Arch Irwin Carson, MD, President of the Medical Staff, 1908-1917
Carson was a prominent surgeon. He was noted as being the father of UC football and is in the UC athletic Hall of Fame.
In her 1909 annual report, Governess (Head Nurse) A. Eliza Gordon recounted “teaching 560 boys and 499 girls, mending 31,058 garments, sewed on 19,920 buttons, mated 9,951 pairs of stockings, and recited 1,889 stories on Fridays."
Mary Emery, William Cooper Procter, Albert Graeme, MD, The trio that started it all and got the modern department of pediatrics off to a good start.
The B.K. Rachford Professor & Chair of Pediatrics was endowed by Cincinnati philanthropist Mary Emery in 1920.
The hospital’s second home in 1887 was on Mason Street near Christ Hospital in Mount Auburn, with 20 beds and two wards.
In 1927, the new hospital was lauded by architect W.H. Sears as “superior to all others” and “best in the United States” for its “contemporary architecture”
“Things don’t just happen. You make them happen”
William Cooper Procter, President of the Children’s Hospital Board of Trustees, 1921-1924
“This (still functional) American Optical manual microtome was used at Cincinnati Children’s nearly 100 years ago. It cut extremely think slices of material, known as sections, allowing preparation of samples for observation.”
Kenneth Blackfan, MD The first B.K Rachford Professor & Chair of Pediatrics, 1922-1923. Before leaving for Harvard, Blackfan was instrumental in recruiting Dr. Albert Graeme Mitchell.
Albert Graeme Mitchell, MD The second B.K. Professor & Chair of Pediatrics, 1924-1941. Mitchell emphasized research and practice while overseeing the planning and staffing of the new Children’s Hospital.
Robert Lyon, MD, was Mitchell’s second full-time appointment and became one of the most important contributors to pediatric healthcare in Cincinnati
Waldo Nelson, MD, Mitchell’s third full-time appointment, took over the role of editor of the Textbook of Pediatrics..
Children’s Hospital was the first pediatric hospital with a building dedicated to research, In 1928, Procter gifted $2.5M ($38M today) to build and endow a Research Foundation.
“This facility will be a beacon of light to men and women who are seeking to blaze a trail for child health.” President Herbert Hoover, May 1931
Ruth Lyons, a local icon and trailblazer for women in broadcasting, created the Ruth Lyons Children’s Fund in 1939 to provide toys and cheer for patients at Cincinnati Children’s and area hospitals. Those efforts continue to this day.
Josef Warkany, MD, was among the first to join the new Research Foundation, arriving in 1932 from Vienna. He is known as the “Father of Teratology” (the study of birth defects).
Samuel Rapoport, MD, joined the Research Foundation in 1937 from Vienna and perfected a preservation for whole blood, which was used by the military in WWII.
Albert Sabin, MD, was hired as director of Virology and went on to discover the oral polio vaccine in the late 1950s.
Thousands of families came to Cincinnati Children’s for the free polio vaccine on “Sabin Sunday” – April 24, 1960
A. Ashley Weech, MD The third B.K. Rachford Professor & Chair of Pediatrics, 1942-1963. Weech got us through the shortages of WWII and recruited Katie Dodd, MD, from Vanderbilt and division directors for many emerging pediatric subspecialties
Frederic Silverman, MD, was part of Dr. Weech’s Dream Team and led Radiology from 1947-1975.
In 1943, Katherine Dodd, MD, became the first woman to hold a full-time faculty position.
In the 1950s, Cincinnati Children’s became a leader in open-heart surgery. The bubble-defoam oxygenator heart-lung machine helped the team perform the first open-heart surgery in 1952.
In 1957, Lester Martin, MD, joined as first director of Pediatric Surgery. He performed the first pediatric kidney transplant in the state of Ohio and the first liver transplant at Cincinnati Children’s.
“I know of no disease that got worse because someone studied it”
Edward Pratt, MD
Edward Pratt, MD The fourth B.K. Rachford Professor and Chair of Pediatrics, 1963-1979. Pratt consolidated all pediatric care and residency training and invigorated the Research Foundation.
