Standing at 552 metres above sea level, the Peak is the highest mountain on Hong Kong Island and a natural signaling post for incoming cargo ships in the nineteenth century. The more privileged early residents, however, found it the perfect retreat from Hong Kong scorching summer heat.
Sedan chair
Governor Sir Richard MacDonnell's summer home (circa 1868) was built there to take advantage of the cooler but humid climes. Soon other wealthy residents followed suit. Many of them traversed up and down the steep Peak paths by sedan chair, which were carried by their personal staff of uniformed bearers. From 1904, the Peak was designated an exclusive residential area reserved only for expatriates although this practice ended in 1947.
Further development of the Peak did not really occur until Alexander Findlay Smith, who had worked for Scotland's Highland Railway, managed to petition the Governor, Sir John Pope-Hennessy, in 1881 to operate tram routes. One of them connected the south of Murray Barracks to Victoria Gap on the Peak. The Peak had attracted its prestigious residents since the 19th century.
The Peak Hotel
Mr. Findlay Smith was hoping the tram route would increase visitor traffic and boost business at the erstwhile Peak Hotel, which opened eight years earlier in 1873 on land he owned. Unfortunately, the hotel was destroyed in a fire in 1938.
With a regular and reliable form of public transportation now available, the Peak quickly became renowned for its spectacular views of the city and the harbour. Today, the Peak attracts some seven million visitors a year, making it one of Hong Kong's top tourist destinations.

Hong Kong skyline is nothing short of amazing, and it's best admired at Victoria Peak.
The city has more buildings above 100m and 150m than any other city in the world.
Hong Kong also holds the title for the world's biggest skyline with a total of 7,681 skyscrapers, placing it ahead of New York City, even though New York is larger in area.

Peak Tram Ride along with stunning views of Hong Kong Island and Victoria Harbor from The Peak (太平山).
We are visiting Victoria Peak. One thing I find fascinating about Hong Kong is that they use bamboo scaffolding to make buildings. Unbelievable and it works.
So we're on the tram now and we're traveling all the way up to Victoria Peak and it's really steep.
Well, well what do you think? We're so high up it's scary. I'm not going near the edge.

So we took the tram all the way up and it was a bit of a scary ride because it is super steep and you're kind of leaning back in your seat kind of holding on to the rail in front of you. But we survived and the views are pretty impressive. Like once we got up here we had to go through a mall like just several levels and now we're up here on top and it's a beautiful sunny day. It's nice. How many time have you been here? This is my second time here. My first time here was 2008. My very first time I went backpacking, so that's a long time ago. Has it changed a lot? Well, there is some new buildings obviously yeah. So the skyline has changed a little bit but when I came before it was late at night and this place was packed. It's nice to come around this of day between say four and six o'clock because there is hardly anyone here. We can find little quiet areas to just rest in the shade. It's great. Hong Kong without a doubt has the most impressive skyline I've ever seen. Just phenomenal.

Victoria Peak (Chinese: 太平山, or previously- 扯旗山) is a mountain in Hong Kong. It is also known as Mount Austin, and locally as The Peak. The mountain is located in the western half of Hong Kong Island. With an altitude of 552 m (1,811 ft), it is the highest mountain on the island proper, but not in the entirety of Hong Kong, an honour which belongs to Tai Mo Shan.
The actual summit of Victoria Peak is occupied by a radio telecommunications facility and is closed to the public. However, the surrounding area of public parks and high-value residential land is the area that is normally meant by the name The Peak. It is a major tourist attraction which offers views over Central, Victoria Harbour, and the surrounding islands.
As early as 19th century, the Peak attracted prominent European residents because of its panoramic view over the city and its temperate climate compared to the sub-tropical climate in the rest of Hong Kong. The sixth Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Richard MacDonnell had a summer residence built on the Peak circa 1868. Those that built houses named them whimsically, such as The Eyrie, and the Austin Arms. Victoria Peak Bus Ride Part 1. Bus ride is HK$9.80 per person and half price for kids. Prices correct as of Sep 2015. http://www.hk-victoria-peak.com/bus-15-peak.html We were in Hong Kong. After taking the Star Ferry from Kowloon side to Hong Kong side, we found the bus stop to take Citybus 15 that would bring us up to Victoria Peak. The bus ride would take between 40 min and 1 hour, depending on traffic. This was the cheapest (or most cost effective) way to get up to Victoria peak. Cheapest Way to Get to Victoria Peak Hong Kong Bus Ride Citybus Number 15 Part 1
Victoria Peak Bus Ride Part 1. Bus ride is HK$9.80 per person and half price for kids. Prices correct as of Sep 2015. http://www.hk-victoria-peak.com/bus-15-peak.html We were in Hong Kong. After taking the Star Ferry from Kowloon side to Hong Kong side, we found the bus stop to take Citybus 15 that would bring us up to Victoria Peak. The bus ride would take between 40 min and 1 hour, depending on traffic. This was the cheapest (or most cost effective) way to get up to Victoria peak. Standing at 552 metres above sea level, the Peak is the highest mountain on Hong Kong Island and a natural signaling post for incoming cargo ships in the nineteenth century. The more privileged early residents, however, found it the perfect retreat from Hong Kong scorching summer heat.
Sedan chair
Governor Sir Richard MacDonnell's summer home (circa 1868) was built there to take advantage of the cooler but humid climes. Soon other wealthy residents followed suit. Many of them traversed up and down the steep Peak paths by sedan chair, which were carried by their personal staff of uniformed bearers. From 1904, the Peak was designated an exclusive residential area reserved only for expatriates although this practice ended in 1947.
Further development of the Peak did not really occur until Alexander Findlay Smith, who had worked for Scotland's Highland Railway, managed to petition the Governor, Sir John Pope-Hennessy, in 1881 to operate tram routes. One of them connected the south of Murray Barracks to Victoria Gap on the Peak. The Peak had attracted its prestigious residents since the 19th century.
The Peak Hotel
Mr. Findlay Smith was hoping the tram route would increase visitor traffic and boost business at the erstwhile Peak Hotel, which opened eight years earlier in 1873 on land he owned. Unfortunately, the hotel was destroyed in a fire in 1938.
With a regular and reliable form of public transportation now available, the Peak quickly became renowned for its spectacular views of the city and the harbour. Today, the Peak attracts some seven million visitors a year, making it one of Hong Kong's top tourist destinations.

It's nice. How many time have you been here? This is my second time here. My first time here was 2008. My very first time I went backpacking, so that's a long time ago. Has it changed a lot? Well, there is some new buildings obviously yeah. So the skyline has changed a little bit but when I came before it was late at night and this place was packed. It's nice to come around this of day between say four and six o'clock because there is hardly anyone here. We can find little quiet areas to just rest in the shade. It's great. Hong Kong without a doubt has the most impressive skyline I've ever seen. Just phenomenal.

We were in Hong Kong. After taking the Star Ferry from Kowloon side to Hong Kong side, we found the bus stop to take Citybus 15 that would bring us up to Victoria Peak. The bus ride would take between 40 min and 1 hour, depending on traffic. This was the cheapest (or most cost effective) way to get up to Victoria peak. You could take the peak tram but that would be much more expensive. Peak tram one-way will cost HK$28 per adult.

A cold wave from the north led to snowfall yesterday in several of the nation’s highest mountains, while simultaneously triggering higher air pollution levels in southern Taiwan.
