Uncle's Dream Audiobook Fyodor DOSTOYEVSKY Uncle's Dream Fyodor DOSTOYEVSKY (1821 - 1881), translated by Frederick WHISHAW (1854 - 1934) Uncle’s Dream by Fyodor Dostoyevsky was written following his five year exile to Siberia where he was sent to serve in a hard labor camp. Following what could only have been a harrowing and harsh existence in Russia’s infamous prison for political and social prisoners, one would expect Dostoyevsky’s work to have been dark and bitter. Rather, Uncle’s Dream is a humorous and yet scathing commentary on Russian provincial high-society. The story of elderly Prince K. who comes to visit the town of Mordasoff, lorded over by the imperious Maria Alexandrovna, is one of love, hate, deceit and greed. Standing reluctantly at Maria Alexandrovna’s side is her haughty daughter, Zina, who has few friends of her own. The prince’s companion and distant relative is Paul Mosgliakoff, suitor to Zina. Maria Alexandrovna and Zina are the central characters in the charade to lure the senile prince into a marriage of convenience (not for him but for Maria Alexandrovna and Zina). They, and a host of lesser characters, are brought to life in full color by Dostoyevsky’s masterful wordsmithing. Uncle’s Dream is a must listen for any fan of not only Dostoyevsky, but of Russian literature and the “goings-on” of the Russian “upper crust.” (Summary by Greg Giordano) Genre(s): Published 1800 -1900 Language: English Tags : fyodor dostoevsky crime and punishment by fyodor dostoevsky fyodor dostoyevsky books crime and punishment by fyodor dostoyevsky dostoevsky biography fyodor dostoevsky books the possessed dostoevsky dostoevsky brothers karamazov crime and punishment fyodor dostoyevsky the double fyodor dostoyevsky fyodor dostoevsky crime and punishment fyodor dostoevsky biography crime and punishment fyodor dostoevsky white nights dostoyevsky inquisitor karamazov author dostoevsky the devils dostoevsky dostoyevsky novel dostoevsky double dostoevsky the brothers karamazov dostoevsky fyodor devils dostoevsky brothers karamazov pevear best novelists dostoevsky the possessed fyodor dostoevsky the double the idiot by dostoevsky dostoevsky poor folk biography of writer dostoevsky novel dostoyevsky demons russian writer dostoevsky dostoevsky karamazov the idiot by fyodor dostoyevsky the double fyodor dostoevsky dostoevsky works poor folk dostoevsky fyodor dostoyevsky quotes dostoevsky in russian the double by dostoevsky fyodor dostoevsky best books fyodor mikhailovich dostoyevsky the idiot fyodor the idiot fyodor dostoyevsky double dostoevsky dostoevsky collection idiot by dostoevsky the brothers karamasov crime and punishment by dostoevsky the double fyodor dostoevsky brothers dostoevsky as a novelist dostoevsky quotes crime and punishment brothers karamasov crime and punishment fyodor best dostoevsky the double by fyodor dostoyevsky best dostoevsky books russian biography the brothers dostoevsky writer dostoevsky biography of dostoevsky books by fyodor dostoevsky brothers karamazov dostoevsky demons by fyodor dostoyevsky fydor dostoyevsky dostoevsky crime brothers dostoevsky dostoevsky author best fyodor dostoevsky books works of dostoevsky biography of fyodor dostoevsky russian novelist dostoevsky russian author quotes biography dostoevsky fyodor mikhaylovich dostoyevsky fyodor dostoyevsky biography the double by fyodor dostoevsky books of dostoevsky about dostoevsky crime and punishment by fyodor fyodor dostoyevsky quote crime punishment dostoevsky best russian author best books of dostoevsky who was fyodor dostoevsky best of dostoevsky dostoevsky writer dostoevsky moscow fyodor dostoevsky double dostoevsky short stories author dostoevsky dostoevsky fyodor russian writer dostoevsky dostoevsky in russian fyodor dostoevsky short stories books by fyodor dostoevsky dostoevsky stories writer dostoevsky free short novel short stories by dostoevsky books of dostoevsky short novella novel short who was fyodor dostoevsky fyodor dostoevsky books free download dostoevsky writer dostoevsky siberia dostoevsky novella dream novella
Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov (Russian: Влади́мир Влади́мирович Набо́ков, pronounced [vlɐˈdʲimʲɪr nɐˈbokəf] ( listen), also known by the pen name Vladimir Sirin; 22 April [O.S. 10 April] 1899c -- 2 July 1977) was a Russian-American novelist. Nabokov's first nine novels were in Russian. He then rose to international prominence as a writer of English prose. He also made serious contributions as a lepidopterist and chess composer. Nabokov's Lolita (1955) is his most famous novel, and often considered his finest work in English. It exhibits the love of intricate word play and synesthetic detail that characterised all his works. The novel was ranked fourth in the list of the Modern Library 100 Best Novels; Pale Fire (1962) was ranked at 53rd on the same list, and his memoir, Speak, Memory, was listed eighth on the Modern Library nonfiction list. He was a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction seven times, but never won it. Nabokov's first writings were in Russian, but he came to his greatest distinction in the English language. For this achievement, he has been compared to Joseph Conrad, yet Nabokov viewed this as a dubious comparison, as Conrad composed in French and English. Nabokov disdained the comparison for aesthetic reasons, lamenting to the critic Edmund Wilson, "I am too old to change Conradically" -- which John Updike later called, "itself a jest of genius".[22] Nabokov translated many of his own early works into English, sometimes in cooperation with his son Dmitri. His trilingual upbringing had a profound influence on his artistry. Nabokov himself translated into Russian two books that he had originally written in English, Conclusive Evidence and Lolita. The "translation" of Conclusive Evidence was made because of Nabokov's feeling of imperfection in the English version. Writing the book, he noted that he needed to translate his own memories into English, and to spend a lot of time explaining things that are well known in Russia; then he decided to re-write the book once again, in his first native language, and after that he made the final version, Speak, Memory (Nabokov first wanted to name it "Speak, Mnemosyne"). Nabokov was a proponent of individualism, and rejected concepts and ideologies that curtailed individual freedom and expression, such as totalitarianism in its various forms, as well as Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis.[23] Poshlost, or as he transcribed it, poshlust, is disdained and frequently mocked in his works.[24] On translating Lolita, Nabokov writes, "I imagined that in some distant future somebody might produce a Russian version of Lolita. I trained my inner telescope upon that particular point in the distant future and I saw that every paragraph, pock-marked as it is with pitfalls, could lend itself to hideous mistranslation. In the hands of a harmful drudge, the Russian version of Lolita would be entirely degraded and botched by vulgar paraphrases or blunders. So I decided to translate it myself."[25] Nabokov published under the pseudonym "Vladimir Sirin" in the 1920s to 1940s, occasionally to mask his identity from critics.[26] He also makes cameo appearances in some of his novels, such as the character "Vivian Darkbloom" (an anagram of "Vladimir Nabokov"), who appears in both Lolita and Ada, or Ardor. Nabokov is noted for his complex plots, clever word play, and use of alliteration. He gained both fame and notoriety with his novel Lolita (1955), which tells of a grown man's devouring passion for a twelve-year-old girl. This and his other novels, particularly Pale Fire (1962), won him a place among the greatest novelists of the 20th century. His longest novel, which met with a mixed response, is Ada (1969). He devoted more time to the composition of this novel than any of his others. Nabokov's fiction is characterised by linguistic playfulness. For example, his short story "The Vane Sisters" is famous in part for its acrostic final paragraph, in which the first letters of each word spell out a message from beyond the grave. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nabakov

A Novel in Nine Letters Audiobook Fyodor Dostoyevsky The bibliography of Fyodor Dostoyevsky comprises novels, novellas, short stories, essays and other literary works. Raised by a literate family, Dostoyevsky discovered literature at an early age, beginning when his mother introduced the Bible to him. Nannies near the hospitals—in the grounds of which he was raised—introduced Dostoyevsky to fairy tales, legends and sagas. His mother's subscription to the Library of Reading gave him access to the leading contemporary Russian and non-Russian literature. After his mother's death, Dostoyevsky moved from a noble school to a military academy and despite the resulting lack of money, he was captivated by literature until his death . : Wikipidia Tags : fyodor dostoevsky crime and punishment by fyodor dostoevsky crime and punishment by fyodor dostoyevsky fyodor dostoevsky books dostoevsky biography fyodor dostoyevsky books the possessed dostoevsky the double fyodor dostoyevsky crime and punishment fyodor dostoyevsky fyodor dostoevsky biography fyodor dostoevsky crime and punishment author dostoevsky crime and punishment fyodor dostoevsky white nights dostoyevsky inquisitor karamazov dostoevsky the grand inquisitor the devils dostoevsky dostoyevsky novel books by dostoevsky fyodor karamazov brothers karamazov pevear dostoevsky fyodor dostoevsky the possessed devils dostoevsky fyodor dostoevsky the brothers karamazov the idiot by dostoevsky the idiot by fyodor dostoyevsky dostoevsky poor folk dostoevsky best books dostoevsky karamazov dostoevsky novel the brothers of karamazov dostoyevsky demons russian writer dostoevsky dostoevsky works dostoyevsky fyodor biography of writer fyodor dostoyevsky quotes brothers karamazov by fyodor dostoevsky crime and punishment by dostoevsky poor folk dostoevsky dostoevsky collection idiot by dostoevsky the idiot fyodor dostoevsky st petersburg dostoevsky in russian the brothers karamazov fyodor dostoevsky the idiot fyodor dostoyevsky the brothers karamasov quotes by dostoevsky fyodor mikhailovich dostoyevsky best dostoevsky books crime and punishment fyodor brothers karamasov dostoevsky as a novelist a karamazov dostoevsky brothers dostoevsky quotes crime and punishment dostoevsky quotes brothers karamazov russian biography fyodor dostoevsky best books writer dostoevsky the brothers dostoevsky demons by fyodor dostoyevsky biography of dostoevsky best dostoevsky fydor dostoyevsky brothers karamazov dostoevsky the brothers karamazov dostoevsky fyodor dostoevsky brothers karamazov best fyodor dostoevsky books biography of fyodor dostoevsky the brothers karamazov by dostoevsky books by fyodor dostoevsky works of dostoevsky dostoevsky crime quotes of dostoevsky brothers dostoevsky dostoevsky author russian author quotes fyodor mikhaylovich dostoyevsky best russian novelists st petersburg dostoevsky dostoevsky karamazov brothers crime and punishment by fyodor biography of russia dostoevsky the brothers about dostoevsky death and punishment dostoevsky best novel

The two years before he wrote Crime and Punishment (1866) had been bad ones for Dostoyevsky. His wife and brother had died; the magazine he and his brother had started, Epoch, collapsed under its load of debt; and he was threatened with debtor's prison. With an advance that he managed to wangle for an unwritten novel, he fled to Wiesbaden, hoping to win enough at the roulette table to get himself out of debt. Instead, he lost all his money; he had to pawn his clothes and beg friends for loans to pay his hotel bill and get back to Russia. One of his begging letters went to a magazine editor, asking for an advance on yet another unwritten novel — which he described as Crime and Punishment. One of the supreme masterpieces of world literature, Crime and Punishment catapulted Dostoyevsky to the forefront of Russian writers and into the ranks of the world's greatest novelists. Drawing upon experiences from his own prison days, the author recounts in feverish, compelling tones the story of Raskolnikov, an impoverished student tormented by his own nihilism, and the struggle between good and evil. Believing that he is above the law, and convinced that humanitarian ends justify vile means, he brutally murders an old woman — a pawnbroker whom he regards as "stupid, ailing, greedy…good for nothing." Overwhelmed afterwards by feelings of guilt and terror, Raskolnikov confesses to the crime and goes to prison. There he realizes that happiness and redemption can only be achieved through suffering. Infused with forceful religious, social, and philosophical elements, the novel was an immediate success. This extraordinary, unforgettable work is reprinted here in the authoritative Constance Garnett translation. Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (September 9, 1828 – November 20, 1910 was a Russian writer who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays. Tolstoy is equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer. His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal twentieth-century figures as Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. Tolstoy was born in Yasnaya Polyana, the family estate in the Tula region of Russia. The Tolstoys were a well-known family of old Russian nobility. He was the fourth of five children of Count Nikolai Ilyich Tolstoy, a veteran of the Patriotic War of 1812, and Countess Mariya Tolstaya (Volkonskaya). Tolstoy's parents died when he was young, so he and his siblings were brought up by relatives. In 1844, he began studying law and oriental languages at Kazan University. His teachers described him as "both unable and unwilling to learn." Tolstoy left university in the middle of his studies, returned to Yasnaya Polyana and then spent much of his time in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. In 1851, after running up heavy gambling debts, he went with his older brother to the Caucasus and joined the army. It was about this time that he started writing. House Of The Dead by Fyodor Dostoyevsky | Part 1: http://youtu.be/leJmlqpidDQ Accused of political subversion as a young man, Dostoyevsky was sentenced to four years of hard labor at a Siberian prison camp — a horrifying experience from which, years later, he developed this semi-autobiographical memoir of a man condemned to penal servitude for murdering his wife. Describing in relentless detail the physical and mental suffering of the convicts, this haunting and remarkable work ranks amoung Dostoyevsky's greatest masterpieces. One of the most powerful and significant authors in all modern fiction, Fyodor Dostoevsky was the son of a harsh and domineering army surgeon who was murdered by his own serfs (slaves), an event that was extremely important in shaping Dostoevsky's view of social and economic issues. He studied to be an engineer and began work as a draftsman. However, his first novel, Poor Folk (1846), was so well received that he abandoned engineering for writing. In 1849, Dostoevsky was arrested for being a part of a revolutionary group that owned an illegal printing press. He was sentenced to be executed, but the sentence was changed at the last minute, and he was sent to a prison camp in Siberia instead. By the time he was released in 1854, he had become a devout believer in both Christianity and Russia - although not in its ruler, the Czar. During the 1860's, Dostoevsky's personal life was in constant turmoil as the result of financial problems, a gambling addiction, and the deaths of his wife and brother. His second marriage in 1887 provided him with a stable home life and personal contentment, and during the years that followed he produced his great novels: Crime and Punishment (1886), the story of Rodya Raskolnikov, who kills two old women in the belief that he is beyond the bounds of good and evil; The Idiots (1868), the story of an epileptic who tragically affects the lives of those around him; The Possessed (1872), the story of the effect of revolutionary thought on the members of one Russian community; A Raw Youth (1875), which focuses on the disintegration and decay of family relationships and life; and The Brothers Karamazov (1880), which centers on the murder of Fyodor Karamazov and the effect the murder has on each of his four sons. These works have placed Dostoevsky in the front rank of the world's great novelists. Dostoevsky was an innovator, bringing new depth and meaning to the psychological novel and combining realism and philosophical speculation in his complex studies of the human condition. This collection, unique to the Modern Library, gathers seven of Dostoevsky's key works and shows him to be equally adept at the short story as with the novel. Exploring many of the same themes as in his longer works, these small masterpieces move from the tender and romantic White Nights, an archetypal nineteenth-century morality tale of pathos and loss, to the famous Notes from the Underground, a story of guilt, ineffectiveness, and uncompromising cynicism, and the first major work of existential literature. Among Dostoevsky's prototypical characters is Yemelyan in The Honest Thief, whose tragedy turns on an inability to resist crime. Presented in chronological order, in David Magarshack's celebrated translation, this is the definitive edition of Dostoevsky's best stories. Dostoyevsky is usually regarded as one of the finest novelists who ever lived. Literary modernism, existentialism, and various schools of psychology, theology, and literary criticism have been profoundly shaped by his ideas. His works are often called prophetic because he so accurately predicted how Russia's revolutionaries would behave if they came to power. In his time he was also renowned for his activity as a journalist. In 1876-77 Dostoyevsky devoted his energies to Dnevnik pisatelya, which he was now able to bring out in the form he had originally intended. A one-man journal, for which Dostoyevsky served as editor, publisher, and sole contributor, the Diary represented an attempt to initiate a new literary genre. Issue by monthly issue, the Diary created complex thematic resonances among diverse kinds of material: short stories, plans for possible stories, autobiographical essays, sketches that seem to lie on the boundary between fiction and journalism, psychological analyses of sensational crimes, literary criticism, and political commentary. The Diary proved immensely popular and financially rewarding, but as an aesthetic experiment it was less successful, probably because Dostoyevsky, after a few intricate issues, seemed unable to maintain his complex design. Instead, he was drawn into expressing his political views, which, during these two years, became increasingly extreme. Specifically, Dostoyevsky came to believe that western Europe was about to collapse, after which Russia and the Russian Orthodox church would create the kingdom of God on earth and so fulfill the promise of the Book of Revelation. In a series of anti-Catholic articles, he equated the Roman Catholic church with the socialists because both are concerned with earthly rule and maintain (Dostoyevsky believed) an essentially materialist view of human nature. He reached his moral nadir with a number of anti-Semitic articles. Because Dostoyevsky was unable to maintain his aesthetic design for the Diary, its most famous sections are usually known from anthologies and so are separated from the context in which they were designed to fit. These sections include four of his best short stories--"Krotkaya" ("The Meek One"), "Son smeshnogo cheloveka" ("The Dream of a Ridiculous Man"), "Malchik u Khrista na elke" ("The Heavenly Christmas Tree"), and "Bobok"--as well as a number of autobiographical and semifictional sketches, including "Muzhik Marey" ("The Peasant Marey"), "Stoletnaya" ("A Hundred-Year-Old Woman"), and a satire, "Spiritizm. Nechto o chertyakh Chrezychaynaya khitrost chertey, esli tolko eto cherti" ("Spiritualism. Something about Devils. The Extraordinary Cleverness of Devils, If Only These Are Devils").
