"The Dying Swan" is a famous short ballet choreographed by Mikhail Fokine to the music of Saint-Saens in 1905 for the great Anna Pavlova. Mlle. Pavlova was inspired to ask Fokine to create this piece by Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poem "The Dying Swan" and from the swans seen in the public parks.
The original concept of the piece is that the Swan has been wounded and is painfully fighting against death, but in the end, she loses her battle and dies. The great Maya Plisetskaya famously presented the Swan as elderly and stubborn and dying of old age, rather than dying from a wound when she danced the piece at the age of 61.
This variation became Mlle. Pavlova's signature ballet, but today, what it is performed as "The Dying Swan" is miles away from what Fokine actually choreographed.
In the words of Fokine's granddaughter, Isabelle:
"The Dying Swan does not make enormous technical demands, but rather enormous artistic ones because every movement and every gesture should signify a different experience, which is emerging from someone who is attempting to escape death."
Today, what we have as "The Dying Swan" is very a "Swan Lake" style piece that strongly resembles the Swan Queen Odette, which is not what Fokine intended.
Isabelle Fokine said in today's version "it looks like Odette at death's door. The ballet in essence is not about the beauty of a ballerina being able to transform herself into a figure of a swan. It is not about a swan, it is about death and the swan is simply a metaphor."
Here we have a comparison between Ulyana Lopatkina's version and Anna Pavlova's version - look at how different these two versions are! As you can see, Pavlova is all about the artistry, while Lopatkina is all about the technique. "The Dying Swan" today has become too technical and does not in any way match Fokine's original creation for one of the greatest ballerinas of all time.
According to legend, when Anna Pavlova was lying on her deathbed, her last words were, "Get my Swan costume ready".

This is the only known recording of the voice of Anna Pavlova.
I've included two versions of the footage.
In the first version, the ballerina's voice is clearer, and the picture somewhat blurry. And in the second the picture is much clearer, with close-ups of the interaction towards the end, but Pavlova's voice is indistinct.
It is possible there were (at least) two takes of this scene as the images and the sound are subtly different in each, which I'll outline.
In first version of the footage, we see the ballerina walking along a stone path surrounding the edge of a small lake in the gardens of her home, Ivy House, which is situated in Golders Green, north of Hampstead Heath, in London.
She throws food from a bowl into the lake towards two large white swans, stationary in the water. As she reaches a small flight of stone stairs coming down from the house, she kneels down and then sits on the ground, her feet towards us, as she continues to throw food into the water.
At one point, she leans forwards and looks around back of her, smiles and laughs presumably at some behind her just out of frame.
All the while, she is calling to her swans, one being her famed favourite, Jack, as you hear:
"Jack ... come ... come on jack ... come on ... come on ... come on darlings ... come Jack ... come ... come"
In second version of the footage, we first see the ballerina kneel down by the edge of the small lake at the bottom of the small flight of stone stairs. She appears to have just come down the stone stairs.
Pavlova kneels down and only then begins to feed her swans, and she kneels throughout the footage - she does not sit of the ground with her feet towards us as this may have been perceived as too inelegant in the first take.
The ballerina also appears to begin feeding the birds only when she has knelt down, rather then as a continuous action that started during her walk to the stairs.
As she throws food from a bowl into the lake and the two large white swans paddle across the water towards her, rather than being stationary throughout. Pavlova continues to throw food into the water.
We then have a close-up of this scene.
When the ballerina finishes feeding the swans, she stands up and for a moment contemplates her swans, presumably before going back up the stairs to the house.
There seems much less talk in this second version, which perhaps why it is not more widely known. Or the 'script' may have been the same but the sound recording a poorer quality.
It is truly magically to hear this legendary artist speaking. And I absolutely love the timbre of her voice -- exactly as I would have wanted it to be -- and so expressive, caressingly encouraging the birds to come to her.

Anna Pavlova (Russian: А́нна Па́вловна; February 12 [O.S. January 31] 1881 – January 23, 1931) was a Russian ballerina of the late 19th and the early 20th century. She is widely regarded as one of the finest classical ballet dancers in history and was most noted as a principal artist of the Imperial Russian Ballet and the Ballets Russes of Sergei Diaghilev. Pavlova is most recognised for the creation of the role The Dying Swan and, with her own company, became the first ballerina to tour ballet around the world.
Her mother was a laundress named Lyubov Feodorovna. The identity of her father has been open to debate. She later claimed her father had died when she was two years old. Some sources, including The Saint Petersburg Gazette, have claimed that her illegitimate father was the Jewish–Russian banker Lazar Polyakov. Her mother's second husband, Matvey Pavlov, is believed to have adopted her at the age of three, by which she acquired his last name.
Pavlova's passion for the art of ballet was ignited when her mother took her to a performance of Marius Petipa's original production of The Sleeping Beauty at the Imperial Maryinsky Theater. The lavish spectacle made an impression on the young Pavlova, and at the age of nine she was taken by her mother to audition for the renowned Imperial Ballet School. Because of her age, and what was considered to be a "sickly" appearance, she was not chosen, but in 1891 she was finally accepted, at the age of 10. She appeared for the first time on stage in Marius Petipa's Un conte de fées (A Fairy Tale), which the ballet master staged for the students of the school.

Anna Pavlova Speaks - To Her Swans At Ivy House
This is the only known recording of the voice of Anna Pavlova. I've included two versions of the footage. In the first version, the ballerina's voice is clearer, and the picture somewhat blurry. And in the second the picture is much clearer, with close-ups of the interaction towards the end, but Pavlova's voice is indistinct. It is possible there were (at least) two takes of this scene as the images and the sound are subtly different in each, which I'll outline. In first version of the footage, we see the ballerina walking along a stone path surrounding the edge of a small lake in the gardens of her home, Ivy House, which is situated in Golders Green, north of Hampstead Heath, in London. She throws food from a bowl into the lake towards two large white swans, stationary in the water... -

"The Dying Swan does not make enormous technical demands, but rather enormous artistic ones because every movement and every gesture should signify a different experience, which is emerging from someone who is attempting to escape death."
Today, what we have as "The Dying Swan" is very a "Swan Lake" style piece that strongly resembles the Swan Queen Odette, which is not what Fokine intended.
Isabelle Fokine said in today's version "it looks like Odette at death's door. The ballet in essence is not about the beauty of a ballerina being able to transform herself into a figure of a swan. It is not about a swan, it is about death and the swan is simply a metaphor."
Here we have a comparison between Ulyana Lopatkina's version and Anna Pavlova's version - look at how different these two versions are! As you can see, Pavlova is all about the artistry, while Lopatkina is all about the technique. "The Dying Swan" today has become too technical and does not in any way match Fokine's original creation for one of the greatest ballerinas of all time.
According to legend, when Anna Pavlova was lying on her deathbed, her last words were, "Get my Swan costume ready".

In the first version, the ballerina's voice is clearer, and the picture somewhat blurry. And in the second the picture is much clearer, with close-ups of the interaction towards the end, but Pavlova's voice is indistinct.
It is possible there were (at least) two takes of this scene as the images and the sound are subtly different in each, which I'll outline.
In first version of the footage, we see the ballerina walking along a stone path surrounding the edge of a small lake in the gardens of her home, Ivy House, which is situated in Golders Green, north of Hampstead Heath, in London.
She throws food from a bowl into the lake towards two large white swans, stationary in the water. As she reaches a small flight of stone stairs coming down from the house, she kneels down and then sits on the ground, her feet towards us, as she continues to throw food into the water.
At one point, she leans forwards and looks around back of her, smiles and laughs presumably at some behind her just out of frame.
All the while, she is calling to her swans, one being her famed favourite, Jack, as you hear:
"Jack ... come ... come on jack ... come on ... come on ... come on darlings ... come Jack ... come ... come"
In second version of the footage, we first see the ballerina kneel down by the edge of the small lake at the bottom of the small flight of stone stairs. She appears to have just come down the stone stairs.
Pavlova kneels down and only then begins to feed her swans, and she kneels throughout the footage - she does not sit of the ground with her feet towards us as this may have been perceived as too inelegant in the first take.
The ballerina also appears to begin feeding the birds only when she has knelt down, rather then as a continuous action that started during her walk to the stairs.
As she throws food from a bowl into the lake and the two large white swans paddle across the water towards her, rather than being stationary throughout. Pavlova continues to throw food into the water.
We then have a close-up of this scene.
When the ballerina finishes feeding the swans, she stands up and for a moment contemplates her swans, presumably before going back up the stairs to the house.
There seems much less talk in this second version, which perhaps why it is not more widely known. Or the 'script' may have been the same but the sound recording a poorer quality.
It is truly magically to hear this legendary artist speaking. And I absolutely love the timbre of her voice -- exactly as I would have wanted it to be -- and so expressive, caressingly encouraging the birds to come to her.
