There are many theories of humor which attempt to explain what humor is, what social functions it serves, and what would be considered humorous. Among the prevailing types of theories that attempt to account for the existence of humor, there are psychological theories, the vast majority of which consider humor to be very healthy behavior; there are spiritual theories, which consider humor to be an inexplicable mystery, very much like a mystical experience. Although various classical theories of humor and laughter may be found, in contemporary academic literature, three theories of humor appear repeatedly: relief theory, superiority theory, and incongruity theory. Among current humor researchers, there is no consensus about which of these three theories of humor is most viable. Proponents of each one originally claimed their theory to be capable of explaining all cases of humor; However, they now acknowledge that although each theory generally covers its own area of focus, many instances of humor can be explained by more than one theory. Incongruity and superiority theories, for instance, seem to describe complementary mechanisms which together create humor.
Pete McGraw is a leading researcher at the Humor Research Lab at the University of Colorado, Boulder. In this talk he not only discusses what is funny, but what makes something funny as well. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.) About TED TED is a nonprofit organiza...
Leeds Assistant Professor Peter McGraw and Ph.D. candidate Caleb Warren have crafted a theory of humor, which they call the Benign Violation Theory of Humor. The Benign Violation theory builds on work by Tom Veatch and integrates existing humor theories to propose that humor occurs when and only when three conditions are satisfied: (1) a situation is violation, (2) the situation is benign, and (3) both perceptions occur simultaneously. A violation occurs when a situation threatens the way that you believe the world "ought" to be. Simply put, something seems wrong. Violations take many forms, ranging from tickling and playfighting to the violations of linguistical norms, conventions, and rules that take place in puns. There are also many ways to make a violation benign. McGraw and ...

10/18/2010 Thomas Flamson - UCLA Department of Anthropology "Encryption Theory: The evolution of humor as an honest signal" The Encryption Theory of Humor proposes that humor evolved as a means of signaling similarity in locally variable personal features in order to facilitate assortment with the most compatible peers within the local group. It claims that a necessary component of humorous production is the presence of multiple, divergent understandings of speaker meaning, some of which are dependent on access to implicit information. Because of this dependence, only those listeners with access to this background knowledge can "decrypt" the implicit understandings, which further entails the inference that the speaker shares that access. This provides a channel for the honest signaling of...

Each day most people participate in humorous exchanges. We seek out movies, television programs, and books that make us laugh. Cross-culturally societies appreciate a good "sense of humor." Few would argue that humor is not highly valued. This presentation will focus on theoretical and empirical approaches to understanding humor. It will cover traditional and contemporary theories of humor, along with social psychological, developmental, and cognitive perspectives on humor. Despite E.B. White’s admonition that, "analyzing humor is like dissecting a frog: nobody’s much interested and the frog dies", the talk will leave the frog unscathed.
If you can find the absurdity in your own circumstances, you can keep them from getting you down Although most people value humor, philosophers have said little about it, and what they have said is largely critical. Three traditional theories of laughter and humor are examined, along with the theory that humor evolved from mock-aggressive play in apes. Understanding humor as play helps counter the traditional objections to it and reveals some of its benefits, including those it shares with philosophy itself. Use code ‘ROCKSTARS’ to save 10%! -- Stranger Things is now one of Netflix's most-watched series, and the sci-fi / horror show's success is largely thanks to its embrace of 80s pop culture nostalgia -- films like ET, Poltergiest, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jaws, Nightmare on Elm Street, Stand by Me, The Goonies, Star Wars, Aliens, The Evil Dead, and more. Erik has broken down all of these references, explaining how exactly they make us love Stranger Things so much.
