A metaphor is a figure of speech that identifies something as being the same as some unrelated thing for rhetorical effect, thus highlighting the similarities between the two. While a simile compares two items, a metaphor directly equates them, and does not use "like" or "as" as does a simile. One of the most commonly cited examples of a metaphor in English literature is the "All the world's a stage" monologue from As You Like It:
All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances[...]
—William Shakespeare, As You Like It, 2/7
This quotation expresses a metaphor because the world is not literally a stage. By figuratively asserting that the world is a stage, Shakespeare uses the points of comparison between the world and a stage to convey an understanding about the mechanics of the world and the behavior of the people within it.
The Philosophy of Rhetoric (1937) by I. A. Richards describes a metaphor as having two parts: the tenor and the vehicle. The tenor is the subject to which attributes are ascribed. The vehicle is the object whose attributes are borrowed. In the previous example, "the world" is compared to a stage, describing it with the attributes of "the stage"; "the world" is the tenor, and "a stage" is the vehicle; "men and women" is the secondary tenor, and "players" is the secondary vehicle.

The Sickness is the debut studio album by the American heavy metal band Disturbed. The album was released on March 7, 2000. The album peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 chart and it has spent a total of 103 weeks on that chart, as of June 2010. It is, to date, Disturbed's only album to not hit number one on the Billboard 200.The Sickness has been certified 4x platinum by the RIAA, with around 4,248,000 copies sold in the United States alone as of 2011, making it the band's most successful album. It is one of three Disturbed albums to have the Parental Advisory label and contain high amounts of profanity.
On March 23, 2010, a reissue of the album was released, which includes B-sides, new artwork, and exclusive online content. This reissue celebrates the tenth anniversary of the release of the album and is available for the first time in vinyl format. Disturbed's guitarist, Dan Donegan, commented on the reissue: "[...] it's the album that put us on the map and launched our career. So we went back into the studio and we remixed it, we're having it remastered, we're gonna put a couple of bonus tracks on there and touch up some of the packaging and the artwork. Just a little collector's item, a little tribute to that album for the fans".

Similes and metaphors are similar but nothing more than a comparison in different ways. Similes use “like” or “as,” and metaphors need none of that. They just say exactly what they want to say. (Metaphor) You really are the apple of my eye. (Simile) Hanging with you is as easy as pie. (Metaphor) You’ve got a smile that lights up a room. (Simile) Let’s stay together like the stars and the moon. Chorus (Metaphor) Sometimes you’re hot, and then sometimes you’re cold. (Simile) Then again you can be good as gold. (Metaphor) Into each life a little rain must fall. (Simile) Don’t just sit there...
