Hot off the press—Hidden History of Helena, Montana!
Two of Helena’s premier historians, Ellen Baumler and Jon Axline, share their newest book. Distinguished by statesmen and magnates, Helena's history is colored with many other compelling characters and episodes nearly lost to time. Before achieving eminence in Deadwood, Sheriff Seth Bullock oversaw Montana Territory's first two legal hangings. The Seven Mile House was an oasis of vice for the parched, weary travelers entering the valley on the Benton Road, despite a tumultuous succession of ownership. The heritage of the Sieben Ranch and the saga of "King Kong" Clayton, "the Joe Louis of the Mat," have faded from public memory. From unraveling the myths of Chinatown to detailing the lives of red-light businesswomen and the Canyon Ferry flying saucer hoax, Ellen Baumler and Jon Axline team ...

We were blown away by everything that the capital city of Montana has to offer!
This week, Katelyn planned all the activities to kick off Howard's birthday week and here are our 6 things to do in Helena, Montana. Continuing our free camping streak, we were boondocking at a free campground about 45 minutes outside the city and drove in for a full day of exploration.
0:00 Intro
1:41 Nosh Cafe
3:05 Gates of the Mountains Boat Tours
6:29 Montana State Capitol Building
7:56 General Mercantile
8:46 Reeder's Alley
9:42 Saigon Alley
#freecamping #rvlife
"Katelyn's Day of Fun" began in Last Chance Gulch, Helena's downtown area, where we grabbed a delicious breakfast at Nosh Cafe. The food was amazing and the service was great.
From there we hopped back in the car and drove about 20 minutes to Gates of the Mountains for stop number two. This two hour boat tour through history is an incredible way to learn about the area while taking in the amazing sites of the towering limestone cliffs. At only $16 per person, Gates of the Mountains Boat Tour is a steal! Our Captain was incredibly knowledgeable and shared stories from the Lewis and Clark expedition as well the tragic story of the Mann Gulch Fire. This fire claimed the lives of 13 firefighters and ultimately changed the way the National Forest Services responds to and fights wildfires.
After our historic sightseeing tour, we headed back downtown for a bit more history stopping at the Montana State Capitol building. This beautifully designed state capitol features incredible art work houses both the House and Senate Chambers, which can be viewed from the balcony above. They no longer offer guided tours, but you can grab a map for a little self-exploration.
Stop number four lead us to the General Mercantile, a funky coffee shop combined with an eclectic gift store. It's been around since the 70's and is a great place to refuel with some delicious coffee.
Stop number 5 was another historic stop, Reeder's Alley. This area is the oldest piece of intact history from the gold mining days of Helena. The alley with its impressive brick structures offers a glimpse into early mining life here. It's the oldest street in Montana and the brick structures even withstood the massive earthquake of 1935.
We finished off our whirlwind tour of downtown Helena with a surprise stop for delicious vietnamese at Saigon Alley. Located at the top of Reeder's Alley, we almost missed it had we not heard the clanging of dishes coming down the alley. They recently opened (still no sign outside on the alley side!) and formerly operated as a food truck. The bahn mi, red curry and green curry popcorn were all delicious! We highly recommend venturing off the beaten path to grab a bite here.

Exploring Helena - Montana's State Capitol
Helena. Helena. It’s not Helaaaaana, guys. But it is one of the most friendly and eclectic cities in Montana. But what makes it special? Let’s find out.
There’s just something special about this city. There’s so much to see. So much history packed into the streets and buildings that’s it’s simply impossible to see it all in a day. To even sample just the beginning, where do I begin? I need a guide. I need someone that knows the city like the back of their hand. Someone like… like… yes! I need a guide like this!
One my favorite idiosyncrasies about Helena is the diverse variety of prodigious shops and small businesses. Barnes Jewelry Recently I strolled into Barnes Jewelry and met a couple of really nice gentleman that were more than welcoming to me and my family of squatches.
Marvin and Stacy have quite the collection of not only clocks, but yesteryear toys and electronics. Looking around at the eccentric collection, it elicits a tidal wave of childhood memories. But some of these items, although familiar, reach beyond my era into one or two generations before my time. A lot of these items have their own stories - some of them quite personal - some of them relatable. Marvin also has his own personal treasures that he shares including sets of antique Christmas lights from his childhood, photos of his family, and jewelry that has that personal connection. And Marvin and Stacy certainly don’t forget about the children with their own curiosities. Their store is more than accommodating for little squatches of all ages. Be sure to stop by and talk to these two fine gentleman.
JMacs Store
If you’re looking for authentic and practical made-in-Montana souvenirs, then JMacs Pottery will be on your list of shops to visit. His shop, like many others in this town, comes with its own special story of how it was founded. Jeremy’s story of true grit, determination, and passion is an allegory that we can all appreciate. Each of his creations holds a piece of that inspiration. And when I left, I had that feeling that no matter what life throws at me, there is always a way to triumph.
The Parrot
The Parrot is infamous to Helena locals and, actually, well beyond. It has been a Helena staple for nearly 100 years. During that time, many of the signature recipes and timeless atmosphere have remained true to their roots. We were able to get a sneak peak of how some of their delicious delicacies were made. Thank you for the insight, Parrot – we’ll be seeing you soon on our return pilgrimage later this year.
The Capital
Admittedly I haven’t experienced many other capitol buildings in person, but I must say, this one has some remarkable architecture and artwork. So many stories hidden in the walls and craftsmanship embedded and hammered into every corner. Mindfully explore this building and appreciate not only how it was constructed, but what has taken place to shape Montana into the beautiful place we call home today.
The Cathedral
A beacon on the horizon, these towers still brand the cityscape with their majestic and ornate design. The bells ring out every hour and remind us of its revered past. From the outside, you can still hear the organist practice for mass or special events. And from the inside, well, take a look for yourself.
The Fingerprint
Hauser founded First National Bank of Helena (1866) and later in life served as governor of Montana Territory. Yes, this was just a few years before Montana became an official state in 1889. Hauser’s mansion still stands to this day nestled in the quite neighborhood streets of Helena. This was a popular house back in the day. So popular, it still attracts the most legendary of guests...
What a beautiful day to tour the town to gleam some of the copious history and visit some of the finest people that make the town what it is today. This city is truly a gem fit to be the capitol of our celebrated Montana state. Thank you, Helena, for always welcoming us, and surprising us, with new informative history. We’re not done – no – we’ve only tapped into a small part of what makes this town great. But, we’ll save this continuing story for your personal exploration. So, get out there and enjoy a historical city tucked away deep in the heart of beautiful Montana.

From unraveling the myths of Chinatown to detailing the lives of red-light businesswomen and the Canyon Ferry flying saucer hoax, Ellen Baumler and Jon Axline team up to preserve a compendium of Helena's yesteryear.
