National Guard is the name used by a wide variety of current and historical uniformed organizations in different countries. The original National Guard was formed during the French Revolution around a cadre of defectors from the French Guards.

Ukraine (i/juːˈkreɪn/; Ukrainian: Україна, tr. Ukraina [ukrɑˈjinɑ]) is a country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia to the east and northeast, Belarus to the northwest, Poland and Slovakia to the west, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova to the southwest, and the Black Sea and Sea of Azov to the south and southeast, respectively. It is currently in dispute with Russia over the Crimean peninsula which Russia annexed in 2014 but Ukraine and most of the international community still recognise as Ukrainian. Including Crimea, Ukraine has an area of 603,628 km2 (233,062 sq mi), making it the largest country entirely within Europe and the 46th largest country in the world, and a population of about 44.5 million, making it the 32nd most populous country in the world.
The territory of modern Ukraine has been inhabited since 32,000 BC. During the Middle Ages, the area was a key centre of East Slavic culture, with the powerful state of Kievan Rus' forming the basis of Ukrainian identity. Following its fragmentation in the 13th century, the territory was contested, ruled and divided by a variety of powers, including Lithuania, Poland, the Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary, and Russia. A Cossack republic emerged and prospered during the 17th and 18th centuries, but its territory was eventually split between Poland and the Russian Empire, and later submerged fully into Russia. Two brief periods of independence occurred during the 20th century, once near the end of World War I and another during World War II, but both occasions would ultimately see Ukraine's territories conquered and consolidated into a Soviet republic, a situation that persisted until 1991, when Ukraine gained its independence from the Soviet Union in the aftermath of its dissolution at the end of the Cold War.
The National Guard of Ukraine (NGU; Ukrainian: Національна гвардія України, Natsionalna hvardiya Ukrayiny) is the Ukrainian national gendarmerie. It is part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It was originally created as an agency under the direct control of the Ukrainian parliament on 4 November 1991, following Ukrainian independence. It was later disbanded and merged into the Internal Troops of Ukraine on 11 January 2000 by then President Leonid Kuchma, as part of a "cost-saving" scheme. Following the early 2014 Ukrainian revolution on 13 March 2014, amidst a political crisis in the country, the National Guard was reestablished and the Internal Troops were disbanded.
During the ongoing war in the Donbass region of Ukraine, the forces of the revived National Guard have fought against pro-Russian separatists.
The National Guard was recreated in accordance with the Law of Ukraine "On the National Guard of Ukraine" [Law number 4393] dated 12 March 2014, (the draft legislation being originally introduced to the Ukrainian parliament on 11 March). A previous attempt by then President Yushchenko to bring back the National Guard during civil unrest in 2008 had been blocked in the Rada. It was finally re-established in March 2014 after the beginning of the Crimean crisis.

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Last week the Ukrainian government announced the formation of the National Guard, after it was revealed that the army only had 6,000 combat ready troops compared to Russia's 200,000. The volunteer force will bolster the under-strength military and protect Ukraine's borders after Crimea having been effectively annexed and Russian forces now building up along Ukraine's eastern border. The first to answer the call were the self defense groups who fought on the barricades during last month's revolution. So we headed down to the Maidan to hopefully tag along with them to the training grounds outside of Kiev for their induction day. We bring to the attention of Global Research Readers a video on the atrocities committed in Eastern Ukraine. The mainstream media is silent on the issue. These videos are the object of censorship. Ukraine's National Guard which is supported by the West is controlled by Neo-Nazis with Nazi emblems. In the media's coverage of unfolding atrocities directed against civilians in Eastern Ukraine, the words Nazi, Fascist or Neo-Nazi are a taboo. They have been eliminated from the anthology of investigative reporting. Sea Breeze 2016 - The National Guard of Ukraine
A gruelling boot camp for Ukraine's contract soldiers from the National Guard. Battle-hardened military instructors who've served in Afghanistan and Iraq are training the servicemen in new, NATO-standard techniques. Most of the men in the program have already served for months on the frontline in eastern Ukraine. But they say the new drills are at times more advanced than they've experienced. Some of the exercises include special combative training as well as explosives and firepower handling. Oleksandr Hadjynov, National Guard fighter from light infantry brigade: "During the exercises I remembered the movie GI Jane and others about US marines. About their training. I didn't expect that I would last in the programme and complete it." Combat on Ukraine's frontline is in most cases conduc...
Oklahoma Army National Guardsmen with 1st Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT), conduct pre-mobilization training throughout November at Camp Gruber Training Center (CGTC), near Braggs, Oklahoma, in preparation for their deployment to Ukraine. The 179th is the first of two six-month rotations to the Ukraine as part of the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine, a training mission focused on providing defensive and security training to Ukrainian forces within the U.S. Security Cooperation agreement. With only a few weeks notice of the deployment, the IBCT had to rapidly gear up and ensure more than 250 Soldiers per rotation are ready to mobilize. “Between mobilization and pre-mob training, there were really only a couple weeks,” Col. David Jord...
