T-14 Armata

The T-14 Armata (Russian: Т-14 «Армата»; industrial designation "Object 148") is a Russian 5th generationmain battle tank based on the Armata Universal Combat Platform. It was first seen in public (initially with its turret and cannon shrouded) during rehearsals for the 2015 Moscow Victory Day Parade. From 2015 to 2020 the Russian army plans to acquire 2,300 T-14s.

Design

Featuring a number of innovative characteristics, the T-14 represents a new generation of Russian main battle tanks. The most significant new feature is the use of an unmanned turret, with the crew of three seated in an armored capsule in the front of the hull.

The development of the tank took five years and was initiated after the earlier, incrementally innovative T-95 (object 195) project was cancelled, after protracted development, with authorities citing excessive weight, complexity, and cost.

Armament

The main armament of the T-14 is the 2A82-1M 125 mm (4.92 in) smoothbore cannon, a new replacement for the 2A46 of previous Russian and Soviet tanks. Noteworthy features include an absence of a fume extractor (due to the unmanned turret), a firing rate of 10–12 rounds per minute, and a maximum effective-penetration range of 8 km. The detection range of the tank's optical sensors is more than 5 km for tank-sized targets at day (this is the official government data), and at least 3.5 km at night through the thermal imaging channel. The gunner sight's optical channel is equipped with 4x and 12x optical zoom. The laser rangefinder has a theoretical maximum range of 7.5 km. These systems are duplicated, in addition there is a weaker third system which can fire on the move. The crew uses a high-definition camera to monitor 360 degrees.

Universal Combat

Universal Combat (sometimes abbreviated to UC) is the second video game series by the developer 3000AD Inc. and is the successor of the Battlecruiser series of games. It is reported that, in comparison to the Battlecruiser series, the game places a greater emphasis on action and is designed for a wider audience, appealing to both action and space "sims" fans alike.

Development

The project began as early as 2000 when Derek Smart announced that he had licensed Croteam's Serious Sam game engine for "Project ABC", for "After Battlecruiser", as replacement for the Battlecruiser Tactical Engagement add-on module intended for Battlecruiser Millennium. The game's scheduled release date was in late 2001, developed for PC and Xbox.

Development started in late 2001 as Battlecruiser Generations, the 5th game in the Battlecruiser series. As part of its design, the upcoming game was intended to make use of newer technology. With a new publisher, DreamCatcher Games, on board and offering more oversight, the direction of the game changed towards more action-based gameplay than the Battlecruiser series had previously been known for. The changes warranted a new title, and the name was changed to Universal Combat.

Armata Universal Combat Platform

The "Armata" Universal Combat Platform (Russian: Армата) is a Russian prototype of an advanced next generation heavy military tracked vehicle platform. The Armata platform is the basis of the T-14, the T-15, a combat engineering vehicle, an armoured recovery vehicle, a heavy armoured personnel carrier, a tank support combat vehicle and several types of self-propelled artillery, including the 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV under the same codename based on the same chassis. It is also intended to serve as the basis for artillery, air defense, and NBC defense systems. The new "Armata" tank platform is meant to replace the older Russian MBTs and APCs that are currently used by the Russian military.

Western news media believe the tank is designed to rival and even surpass comparable NATO technology.

Origin of designation

The combat platform is formally designated as "prospective family of heavy unified battlefield platforms". The name "Armata" derives from the plural of the Latin word arma which refers to weapons of war, and was an old Russian word for 14th century guns;it is also the plural of the ancient Greek word "Arma", meaning "chariot". This was wrongly transcribed as "Armada" by journalists on several occasions.

Combat or fighting is a purposeful violent conflict meant to weaken, establish dominance over, or kill the opposition, or to drive the opposition away from a location where it is not wanted or needed.

The term combat (French for fight) typically refers to armed conflict between opposing military forces in warfare, whereas the more general term "fighting" can refer to any physical or verbal conflict between individuals or nations. Combat violence can be unilateral, whereas fighting implies at least a defensive reaction. A large-scale fight is known as a battle. A verbal fight is commonly known as an argument.

Combat may take place under a specific set of rules or be unregulated. Examples of rules include the Geneva Conventions (covering the treatment of people in war), medieval chivalry, the Marquess of Queensberry rules (covering boxing) and several forms of combat sports.

Combat in warfare involves two or more opposing military organizations, usually fighting for nations at war (although guerrilla warfare and suppression of insurgencies can fall outside this definition). Warfare falls under the laws of war, which govern its purposes and conduct, and protect the rights of combatants and non-combatants.
