Hyperbole is the use of exaggeration as a rhetorical device or figure of speech. In rhetoric, it is also sometimes known as auxesis (lit. "growth"). In poetry and oratory, it emphasizes, evokes strong feelings, and creates strong impressions. As a figure of speech, it is usually not meant to be taken literally.
Hyperbole may also be used for instances of such exaggerations for emphasis or effect. Hyperboles are often used in casual speech as intensifiers, such as saying "the bag weighed a ton". Hyperbole makes the point that the speaker found the bag to be extremely heavy, although it was nothing like a literal ton. Understanding hyperboles and their use in context can further one's ability to understand the messages being sent from the speaker. It has been established that use of hyperboles relays emotions. Hyperbole can be used in a form of humour, excitement, distress, and many other emotions, all depending on the context in which the speaker uses it.
Literal and figurative language is a distinction within some fields of language analysis, in particular stylistics, rhetoric, and semantics.
Literal usage gives words their proper meanings, in the sense of the meaning they have by themselves, outside any figure of speech. It maintains a consistent meaning regardless of the context, with the intended meaning corresponding exactly to the meaning of the individual words. Figurative use of language is the use of words or phrases that implies a non-literal meaning which does make sense or that could [also] be true.

It will change your life It will take you from the dark into the light Nothing can prepare you You're so empty now You're so empty now
Hyperbole Prove it to me My eyes won't see, show it to me
So many promises of joy, so many empty words of happiness I'm doing fine here on my own, better than you no matter how you spin it Yeah, that's the ticket
If I say it long enough it will be true (I can't hear you, I know it's not true) If I say it loud enough you'll think it too I can't hear you, I know it's not true)
There's no greater peace All the pressures of your chaotic life will cease You can be like we are You're so lonely now You're so lonely now
You make it sound so tempting, but I didn't just get off the turnip truck I won't buy what you're peddling, the ship you're selling me has run aground I've been around
If I say it long enough it will be true (I can't hear you, I know it's not true) If I say it loud enough you'll think it too I can't hear you, I know it's not true)
