Paddling under The Iron Bridge at Lake Vanaja
Paddling under The Iron Bridge at Lake Vanaja
"The bridge lets the stream run its course and at the same time grants their way to mortals so that they may come and go from shore to shore. Bridges lead in many ways. The city bridge leads from the precincts of the castle to the cathedral square; the river bridge near the country town brings wagons and horse teams to the surrounding villages. The old stone bridge's humble brook crossing gives to the harvest wagon its passage from the fields into the village and carries the lumber cart from the field path to the road. The highway bridge is tied into the network of long-distance traffic, paced as calculated for maximum yield. Always and ever differently the bridge escorts the lingering and hastening ways of men to and from, so that they may get to other banks and in the end, as mortals, to the other side. Now in a high arch, now in a low, the bridge vaults over glen and stream-whether mortals keep in mind this vaulting of the bridge's course or forget that they, always themselves on their way to the last bridge, are actually striving to surmount all that is common and unsound in them in order to bring themselves before the haleness of the divinities. The bridge gathers, as a passage that crosses, before the divinities-whether we explicitly think of, and visibly give thanks for, their presence, as in the figure of the saint of the bridge, or whether that divine presence is obstructed or even pushed wholly aside. The bridge gathers to itself in its own way earth and sky, divinities and mortals. Gathering or assembly, by an ancient word of our language, is called "thing." The bridge is a thing-and, indeed, it is such as the gathering of the fourfold which we have described. To be sure, people think of the bridge as primarily and really merely a bridge-" Source: "Building Dwelling Thinking" in "Poetry, Language, Thought" by Martin Heidegger, translated by Albert Hofstadter, Harper Colophon Books, New York, 1971.- published: 15 Nov 2013

Toledo, Spain
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Founded 7th century
Toledo (Latin: Toletum) is a municipality located in central Spain, 70 km south of Madrid. It is the capital of the province of Toledo and of the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage as one of the former capitals of the Spanish Empire and place of coexistence of Christian, Jewish and Moorish cultures. Many famous people and artists were born or lived in Toledo, including Al-Zarqali, Garcilaso de la Vega, Alfonso X and El Greco. It was also the place of important historic events such as the Visigothic Councils of Toledo. As of 2007, the city has a population of 78,618 and an area of 232.1 km² (89.59 square miles).
Toledo once served as the capital city of Visigothic Spain, beginning with Liuvigild (Leovigild), and was the capital until the Moors conquered Iberia in the 8th century. Under the Caliphate of Cordoba, Toledo enjoyed a golden age. This extensive period is known as La Convivencia, i.e. the co-existence of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Under Arab rule, Toledo was called Tulaytulah (Arabic طليطلة, academically transliterated Ṭulayṭulah).
On May 25, 1085 Alfonso VI of Castile took Toledo and established direct personal control over the Moorish city from which he had been exacting tribute, and ending the mediaeval Taifa's Kingdom of Toledo . This was the first concrete step taken by the combined kingdom of Leon-Castile in the Reconquista by Christian forces.
Toledo was famed for its production of iron and especially of swords and the city is still a center for the manufacture of knives and other steel implements. When Philip II moved the royal court from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, the old city went into a slow decline from which it never recovered.
Toledo's Alcázar became renowned in the 19th and 20th centuries as a military academy. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 its garrison was famously besieged by Republican forces.
Arts and culture
Toledo reached its zenith in the era of Islamic Caliphate. Historian P. de Gayangos writes:
The Muslim scientists of this age were not rivaled in the world. Perhaps among their greatest feats were the famous waterlocks of Toledo.[1]
The old city is located on a mountaintop with a 150 degrees view, surrounded on three sides by a bend in the Tagus River, and contains many historical sites, including the Alcázar, the cathedral (the primate church of Spain), and the Zocodover, a central market place.
From the 4th century to the 16th century about thirty synods were held at Toledo. The earliest, directed against Priscillian, assembled in 400. At the synod of 589 the Visigothic King Reccared declared his conversion from Arianism; the synod of 633 decreed uniformity of liturgy throughout the Visigothic kingdom and took stringent measures against baptized Jews who had relapsed into their former faith. The council of 681 assured to the archbishop of Toledo the primacy of Spain.
As nearly one hundred early canons of Toledo found a place in the Decretum Gratiani, they exerted an important influence on the development of ecclesiastical law. The synod of 1565–1566 concerned itself with the execution of the decrees of the Council of Trent; and the last council held at Toledo, 1582–1583, was guided in detail by Philip II.
Toledo was famed for religious tolerance and had large communities of Muslims and Jews until they were expelled from Spain in 1492 (Jews) and 1502 (Muslims). Today's city contains the religious monuments the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, the Synagogue of El Transito, Mosque of Cristo de la Luz and the church of San Sebastián dating from before the expulsion, still maintained in good condition. Among Ladino-speaking Sephardi Jews, in their various diasporas, the family name Toledano is still prevalent - indicating an ancestry traced back to this city (the name is also attested among non-Jews in various Spanish-speaking countries).
In the 13th century, Toledo was a major cultural center under the guidance of Alfonso X, called "El Sabio" ("the Wise") for his love of learning. The program of translations, begun under Archbishop Raymond of Toledo, continued to bring vast stores of knowledge to Europe by rendering great academic and philosophical works in Arabic into Latin. The Palacio de Galiana, built in the Mudéjar style, is one of the monuments that remain from that period.
The Cathedral of Toledo (Catedral de Toledo) was built between 1226-1493 and modeled after the Bourges Cathedral, though it

Cans - how they are recycled
Aluminium cans are:
* Shredded, removing any coloured coating
* Melted in a huge furnace
* The molten metal is poured into ingot casts to set. Each ingot can be made into around 1.5m cans
* NB: Aluminium foil is a different alloy and is usually recycled separately with other aluminium scraps to make cast items such as engine components, where it makes a big contribution to making vehicles lighter and more energy efficient.
Steel cans are:
* Put into the furnace where molten iron is added
* Oxygen is then blasted into the furnace which heats up to around 1700 degrees centigrade
* The liquid metal is poured into a mould to form big slabs which are then rolled into coils
* These coils are used to make all sorts of steel products such as bikes, cars, bridges, paperclips or even new food and drink cans.

The Gospel According to Jazz, Chapter III
For yours is the kingdom, the victory and the majesty, the power and dominion, for all that is in heaven and earth are yours…1 Chronicles 29:11a
On October 13, 2007, at Reid Temple AME Church on the outskirts of Washington DC, a standing room only audience packed the 3000-plus capacity state-of-the-art worship complex to experience the transforming power of Kirk Whalum’s The Gospel According to Jazz, Chapter III. Recorded live by three generations of Whalums and some of the most resounding names in jazz, pop, gospel and r&b;, The Gospel According to Jazz, Chapter III comes ten years after the first chart-topping Gospel According to Jazz, Chapter I CD debuted, and in the wake of the Grammy nominated, Stellar Award winning second chapter, released in 2002.
The two-disk set, plus DVD, is the most expansive in the series in terms of sheer minutes of music, 118.35 to be exact, but also in terms of content and concept. From the first plaintive note in “Call to Worship,” it is clear that this will be far more than an extension or installment of what came before. Kirk Whalum and company blow the roof off with subtlety, nuance, inspired performances and a message of faith, hope and love that both encompasses and transcends every point on the musical compass.
The accompanying DVD makes the most of Whalum the philosopher, theologian and theorist, with film director Jim Hanon (End of The Spear; and Miss HIV, for which Kirk wrote the soundtrack) capturing him as he weaves the story of jazz, gospel, the blues (verbally and instrumentally) in candid shots interposed with concert footage.
Although Whalum—who lives up to his reputation as “the most influential saxophonist of his generation”—is front and center throughout, this is undoubtedly an ensemble recording. He shares the stage with what could be called the ‘Whalum dynasty’ (three generations and six Whalums: brother Kevin (vocals); Uncle Peanuts (vocals, sax, and piano); son, Kyle (electric bass); nephews Kenneth III (saxophone) and Kortland (vocals), plus first cousin Caleb tha Bridge (vocals/rap). The unparalleled George Duke, featured on both I and II, returns on keys, and is joined by vocalist Lalah Hathaway, guitarist Doc Powell, keyboardist/vocalist John Stoddart, trumpeter/vocalist Aaron Broadus, stand-up bassist, Reginald Veal, percussionist Lenny Castro and Kirk’s former bandmate, drummer Sean McCurley.
The renowned gospel/r&b; writer and producer Jerry Peters once again brings his prodigious talent, sharing credits with Whalum on two songs and also as album co-producer, along with Kirk and Hal Sacks, the latter has served as engineer for all three GATJ live recordings. “My father loved James Cleveland and Jerry brought that sensibility, as well as playing the B3 organ.”
But “gospel” in the radio/church sense is only whispered or suggested. The range of material is reflected in its creators/writers—from Whalum, himself, and son Kyle, to Charlie Chaplin, Diane Warren, Isaiah Jones and Frankie Beverly, among others. This genre-and-time-spanning array of songwriting is the perfect backdrop for Whalum’s seemingly endless expression. His signature r&b-inflected; jazz, rich with romance and melodic power, imbued with blues, funk, pop, Latin and world music is solidly present, but on songs like Ananias and Sapphira, we see the more adventurous Whalum. As he describes it, “The song is definitely avant garde; we go into deep improvisation. This isn’t a good groove and some licks, this is where we go somewhere.” And where he goes is in the direction of Elvin Jones, Coltrane and Henderson. Not only does Whalum pull out all the stops on this sobering nod to God’s holiness and power, but Reginald Veal is a standout on upright, as he turns his bass into a sitar and plucks out a driving percussive and intricate melody.
Whalum is on a mission not just to share the Good News of the Gospel, but to expand it far beyond the walls of the church and traditionally accepted ways of communicating the message, and jazz is the medium. Whalum’s God is a lot bigger and the music that glorifies him is as limitless, transcendent, unexpected and powerful as He is. “How can you describe the indescribable?” queries Whalum. “That’s an opportunity for jazz and other creative arts. I wanted to make sure there were moments where it was ethereal, avant garde—that’s something that’s missing in the genre we call gospel. It needs to go where it is more ‘art music,’ It’s not just in y

The Ironbridge 10K Mud Killer
Hundreds of mud lovers decided to forego the option of a quiet Sunday morning on the sofa to pit themselves against one of the toughest endurance events held in Shropshire. The Ironbridge 10k Mud Killer involved numerous obstacles -- and lots of mud -- around the six-mile course on the edge of the Ironbridge Gorge at Buildwas. More than 250 people took part in the inaugural event yesterday. It was organised by Kickass Endurance and the course was designed by a Royal Marine physical trainer, firefighters and personal fitness trainers to test all-around strength, stamina, determination and team bonding. Those taking part hailed it a huge success, with many taking to Facebook to praise the course and the organisation of the even -- with many promising to return for any repeat of the event next year. Daniel Dykes said: "Great event! Not a bad word to say. A big thumbs up to all involved." Rob Hughes added: "Fab event, well done loved it see you at Weston Park." Kerry-Ann Morris said: "Well done to every one who took part and well done to the guys who made course -- was fab, thanks to all the volunteers who marshalled. Great day had by all." The next event organised by Kick Ass Endurance will be the Weston Park 10k obstacle challenge on October 26.- published: 12 Aug 2013
