Autonomous region is a designation for some types of autonomous administrative divisions.
The Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) or Xizang Autonomous Region, called Tibet or Xizang (Tibetan: བོད་ ; Chinese: 西藏; pinyin: Xīzàng) for short, is a province-level autonomous region of the People's Republic of China (PRC). It was created in 1965 on the basis of Tibet's incorporation by the PRC in 1951.
Within China, Tibet is identified as an Autonomous Region. The current borders of Tibet were generally established in the 18th century and include about half of ethno-cultural Tibet. The Tibet Autonomous Region is the second-largest province-level division of China by area, spanning over 1,200,000 square kilometres (460,000 sq mi), after Xinjiang, and mostly due to its harsh and rugged terrain, is the least densely populated provincial-level division of the PRC.
Modern scholars still debate on the exact nature of relations between Tibet and the Chinese Ming dynasty (1368–1644) and whether the Ming had sovereignty over Tibet after the Mongol conquest of Tibet and Yuan administrative rule in the 13th and 14th centuries. While Tibet has formally been a protectorate of China and under administrative rule of the Qing dynasty (1644–1912) since 1720, from 1912 to 1950 Tibet was dissolved of suzerainty under China proper as a result of the Xinhai Revolution and concentration of the central government fighting against the Japanese invasion during World War II. Other parts of ethno-cultural Tibet (eastern Kham and Amdo) have also been under the administration of the Chinese dynastic government since the mid-eighteenth century; today they are distributed among the provinces of Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan and Yunnan. The Dalai Lama /ˈdɑːlaɪ ˈlɑːmə/ is a monk of the Gelug or "Yellow Hat" school of Tibetan Buddhism, the newest of the schools of Tibetan Buddhism founded by Je Tsongkhapa. The 14th and current Dalai Lama is Tenzin Gyatso.
The Dalai Lama is considered to be the successor in a line of tulkus who are believed to be incarnations of Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, called Chenrezig in Tibetan. The name is a combination of the Mongolic word dalai meaning "ocean" (being the translation of the Tibetan name, 'Gyatso') and the Tibetan word བླ་མ་ (bla-ma) meaning "guru, teacher, mentor". The Tibetan word "lama" corresponds to the better known Sanskrit word "guru".
From 1642 until the 1950s (except for 1705 to 1750), the Dalai Lamas or their regents headed the Tibetan government or Ganden Phodrang which governed all or most of the Tibetan plateau from Lhasa with varying degrees of autonomy, up to complete sovereignty. This government also enjoyed the patronage and protection of firstly Mongol kings of the Khoshut and Dzungar Khanates (1642–1720) and then of the emperors of the Manchu-led Qing dynasty (1720–1912).

Beijing is celebrating 50 years since it made Tibet an autonomous region. This follows a couple of months after long-exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama turned 80, and was feted in Glastonbury, England, in June. He has contested China's iron rule in Tibet since 1950. He calls for a middle way for Tibet, or what he calls "meaningful autonomy". Beijing, however, considers his appeal as a bid for independence. Tibet Autonomous Region, as it is known, means central and western Tibet.… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2015/08/31/tibetan-autonomy-reaches-50-wishes-unresolved What are the top stories today? Over 200 masked Tibetans perform opera to celebrate the ongoing week-long Shoton Festival in Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region. As an indispensable part of the traditional festival, the performances draw people both young and old.
A traditional Tibetan opera competition was held on Friday as part of the ongoing Shoton Festival, in Lhasa, the capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region. Some innovation elements were added to the traditional opera performance. For example, a 33-year-old performer Dawa Yangzom played due roles in her performance – male and female, making their performance be a highlight of the competition. When she played the male role, she would wear a hat, while in the female role, she took off the hat. Masks are the important performing props of the Tibetan opera, which can show the roles’ personalities and characteristics. Chinese scientists witnessed the life-or-death migration of Tibetan antelopes in July and August as they followed the animals for 200 kilometers in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region. The scientists observed more than 150,000 Tibetan antelopes return to their natural habitat just weeks after they had arrived at the Sewu snow mountain in Changtang Nature Reserve on the Tibetan Plateau to give birth. The Changtang Nature Reserve with an area of 300,000 square kilometers is China's biggest habitat for antelopes and wild yaks. According to the latest figures, over 200,000 antelopes live there. The antelopes started their daily journeys shortly after 07:00, traveling 4 to 7 kilometers before stopping for the night. They walked, ate, fed calves and rested, all the while remaining vigi...
The population of Tibetan antelopes in Changtang, which is home to the endangered animals in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, has reached above 150,000, according to latest findings. China, for the first time, recently deployed an unmanned aerial device to keep track of the Tibetan antelopes and figure out their total population. Located at an altitude of 5,000 meters, people find it hard to even breathe in Changtang, let alone conduct a scientific research. It is finally good news for zoologists to resort to the state-of-the-art equipment to track the movements of these animals at Mt. Siu. The unmanned aerial devices flew above an area where antelopes often give birth to cubs, and also followed their migration routes. According to Dr. Hu Jianbo with the Tianjin Researc...

It lives only in central China, in mountainous areas covered in mountain forests, such as Sichuan province, parts of the Shaanxi or the Tibet Autonomous Region, between 1800 and 3400 meters.
