MorganFreeman (摩根): So what is it like? I mean is it alright? 怎麼樣？還可以嗎？
H.H. Karmapa (法王): One way it's meaningful, one way it's a little bit heavy. People have a lot of expectations. 很有意義，同時也有些沈重。人們總是有很多期望。
Morgan Freeman (narration): The expectation is heavy for a thirty-year old man, the Karmapa must teach how to find enlightenment whilst still working to find it for himself.

Morgan Freeman (摩根)：Enlightenment，how does one even begin to form that trial to attain it? 那麼如何開始證悟之路呢？

H.H. Karmapa (法王): The first part is maybe you need to recognise yourself, like where are you from and why am I here? 首先你或許應該先認識你自己，比如你從哪裡來？我為什麼會在這裡？
Morgan Freeman (摩根): So I would like to get some instruction about enlightenment please.那麼請您教我一些證悟方法好嗎？
H.H. Karmapa (法王): I will try. 我試試
Morgan Freeman (narration): The Karmapa tells me meditation is the key to enlightenment, if the apocalypse is the revelation of the true will of God, meditation aims to reveal the true will of me.
摩根·弗里曼畫外敘述：噶瑪巴告訴我禪修是證悟的關鍵。如果世界末日揭示上帝的真意，那麼禪修的目的是見到真實的我。
H.H. Karmapa (法王): There are lots of different ways to meditate but the simple one is to focus on your breathing.有很多禪修的方法，簡單的是專注於自己的呼吸。
Morgan Freeman (摩根): Just the one I know.我剛好知道這種。
H.H. Karmapa (法王): Relax your mind and don't think about the future, at the moment just focus on your breathing and that is all.放輕鬆，不要思考未來，此刻，只是專注於你的呼吸。

Morgan Freeman (摩根): It's about the westerners idea of the apocalypse, the end of time in being. Is there such a thing in Buddhism? When everything stops and the world comes to an end, and mankind is judged. 是西方關於世界末日，人類終結的觀點。佛教有這樣的看法嗎？一切都將停止，世界末日來臨，人類會被審判。
H.H. Karmapa (法王): We believe that everyday, somewhere one universe is ending and another one is beginning, but it's not like there is a judgement day, it's a little bit different.佛教認為每一天，宇宙的某個地方都有結束也有新的開始，而不是認為有一個審判日，有一些不同。
Morgan Freeman (摩根): So actually what your saying is what I think is that there is no end only change, one thing ends another begins.所以我想您在說沒有結束只有改變，一個結束是另一個的開始。
H.H. Karmapa (法王): Yes, maybe there is no absolute ending. 是，沒有一個絕對的結束。
Morgan Freeman (ending narration): When you meet someone like His Holiness Kamarpa, I guess the thing that stands out the most is his humility, the Kamarpa doesn't give you the impression that, he thinks of himself as greater than you, higher than you or better in any way than you. He's here like the rest of us on this quest trying to understand why we're here, seeking to unveil the truth, seeking enlightenment.

In Dutch: Vorig jaar raakte in na een aardige synchroniciteit en via derden in contact met His Holiness de 17e Karmapa Trinlay Thaye Dorje en kreeg ik te horen dat ik en mijn vrouw en kinderen welkom waren om een TV-interview met hem op te nemen. Met het hele gezin de caravan en de bergen in naar een onbekende doch prachtige bestemming. Uiteindelijk zelfs speciale initiaties voor alle monniken (die jaren in retraite zouden gaan de dag erna) mogen filmen in de tempel de dag erna, wat een ervaring. Eenmaal net terug thuis na de reis naar Frankrijk brak de rem-as van onze auto: de duurste Tv-special ooit bleek dus later (maar ook een van de meest enerverende en unieke ervaringen en wie weet zijn we behoed voor een auto-ongeluk op minder vlakke en lage bodem!?) Nu met tranen in ogen kijken naar beelden van onze kinderen die erbij mochten zijn en zelfs zich mochten vermaken met het fonteintje bij de persoonlijke Boeddha van His Holiness de 17e Karmapa (we hadden droge kleren bij ons...).

This great video is (part1) of three of an interview with HH the 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje on Danish television in 2004. The original interview was 40 minutes long. The short version is 14 minutes long split into 3 parts ... and sorry, i am afraid I don't have the full version :-(

Many people have asked you about this, when you escape from Tibet in 1999, is it your own decision or you were affected by other people? Does it take a lot of time to make the decision or it’s a rush one?
It didn’t take too much time, only several months or a year. But when it was decided finally, seems like a very quick decision. Generally, it’s my own decision. No one dares to decide it for me.
Before you left Tibet, other three leaders of Tibetan Buddhism are all in India already, is it inevitable for you to leave and join them?
I think that’s two different things. It is not because they are there so I have to go too. It is because I am the spiritual leader of Kagyu lineage, I should take my responsibilities, fulfilling this inheritance course. I must take this from my gurus, while they were in India at that time and can’t come to Tibet. That’s one reason. And another is I’m worried when I grow up, the Chinese government will give me some political tasks and force me to say bad words about His Holiness Dalai Lama. They want me to say something on their half. I don’t think that’s right thing to do. Last but not the least reason is lots of foreigners come to see me since I was a little kid. So I always wish to go abroad and see the world. However, I’ve waited for so many years but can’t get the permission. Not only I’m not permitted to go abroad, I can’t even go everywhere in Tibet freely. There are lots of restrictions from the government. Everytime my friends come, they beg me to go to their countries. So I am determined to go.
There is a statement released from the official media of Chinese government. In this statement they say when you left Tibet, you left a letter, saying you leave to get the instrument back, it is not a betrayal to the countryman or a betrayal to the monastery.
Yes, I left a letter. Most of the contents are the same as they stated. But there is one more thing in that letter, after all these years can’t get the permission to go abroad, I decided to leave. I didn’t escape just for some instruments.

The Karmapa (officially His Holiness the Gyalwa Karmapa, sometimes spelled Gyalwang Karmapa) is the head of the Karma Kagyu, the largest sub-school of the Kagyupa (Tibetan Bka' brgyud), itself one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
The historical seat of the Karmapas is Tsurphu Monastery in the Tolung valley of Tibet. His Holiness' principal seat in exile is the Dharma Chakra Centre at Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim, India. His regional monastic seats are Karma Triyana Dharmachakra in New York, Dhagpo Kagyu Ling in France and Tashi Choling in Bhutan.
Due to a controversy within the Karma Kagyu school over the recognition process, the identity of the current 17th Karmapa is disputed. See Karmapa controversy for details.
The first Karmapa, Düsum Khyenpa (Dus gsum Mkhyen pa) (1110–1193), was a disciple of the Tibetan master Gampopa. A talented child who studied dharma (Buddhist teachings) with his father from an early age and who sought out great teachers in his twenties and thirties, he is said to have attained enlightenment at the age of fifty while practicing dream yoga. He was henceforth regarded as the Karmapa, a manifestation of Avalokitesvara (Chenrezig), whose coming was predicted in the Samadhiraja Sutra and the Lankavatara Sutra.

Morgan Freeman (narration): The Karmapa tells me meditation is the key to enlightenment, if the apocalypse is the revelation of the true will of God, meditation aims to reveal the true will of me.

Morgan Freeman (ending narration): When you meet someone like His Holiness Kamarpa, I guess the thing that stands out the most is his humility, the Kamarpa doesn't give you the impression that, he thinks of himself as greater than you, higher than you or better in any way than you. He's here like the rest of us on this quest trying to understand why we're here, seeking to unveil the truth, seeking enlightenment.

MorganFreeman (摩根): So what is it like? I mean is it alright? 怎麼樣？還可以嗎？
H.H. Karmapa (法王): One way it's meaningful, one way it's a little bit heavy. People have a lot of expectations. 很有意義，同時也有些沈重。人們總是有很多期望。
Morgan Freeman (narration): The expectation is heavy for a thirty-year old man, the Karmapa must teach how to find enlightenment whilst still working to find it for himself.

Morgan Freeman (摩根)：Enlightenment，how does one even begin to form that trial to attain it? 那麼如何開始證悟之路呢？

H.H. Karmapa (法王): The first part is maybe you need to recognise yourself, like where are you from and why am I here? 首先你或許應該先認識你自己，比如你從哪裡來？我為什麼會在這裡？
Morgan Freeman (摩根): So I would like to get some instruction about enlightenment please.那麼請您教我一些證悟方法好嗎？
H.H. Karmapa (法王): I will try. 我試試
Morgan Freeman (narration): The Karmapa tells me meditation is the key to enlightenment, if the apocalypse is the revelation of the true will of God, meditation aims to reveal the true will of me.

H.H. Karmapa (法王): There are lots of different ways to meditate but the simple one is to focus on your breathing.有很多禪修的方法，簡單的是專注於自己的呼吸。

Morgan Freeman (摩根): It's about the westerners idea of the apocalypse, the end of time in being. Is there such a thing in Buddhism? When everything stops and the world comes to an end, and mankind is judged. 是西方關於世界末日，人類終結的觀點。佛教有這樣的看法嗎？一切都將停止，世界末日來臨，人類會被審判。
H.H. Karmapa (法王): We believe that everyday, somewhere one universe is ending and another one is beginning, but it's not like there is a judgement day, it's a little bit different.佛教認為每一天，宇宙的某個地方都有結束也有新的開始，而不是認為有一個審判日，有一些不同。
Morgan Freeman (摩根): So actually what your saying is what I think is that there is no end only change, one thing ends another begins.所以我想您在說沒有結束只有改變，一個結束是另一個的開始。
H.H. Karmapa (法王): Yes, maybe there is no absolute ending. 是，沒有一個絕對的結束。
Morgan Freeman (ending narration): When you meet someone like His Holiness Kamarpa, I guess the thing that stands out the most is his humility, the Kamarpa doesn't give you the impression that, he thinks of himself as greater than you, higher than you or better in any way than you. He's here like the rest of us on this quest trying to understand why we're here, seeking to unveil the truth, seeking enlightenment.

In Dutch: Vorig jaar raakte in na een aardige synchroniciteit en via derden in contact met His Holiness de 17e Karmapa Trinlay Thaye Dorje en kreeg ik te horen dat ik en mijn vrouw en kinderen welkom waren om een TV-interview met hem op te nemen. Met het hele gezin de caravan en de bergen in naar een onbekende doch prachtige bestemming. Uiteindelijk zelfs speciale initiaties voor alle monniken (die jaren in retraite zouden gaan de dag erna) mogen filmen in de tempel de dag erna, wat een ervaring. Eenmaal net terug thuis na de reis naar Frankrijk brak de rem-as van onze auto: de duurste Tv-special ooit bleek dus later (maar ook een van de meest enerverende en unieke ervaringen en wie weet zijn we behoed voor een auto-ongeluk op minder vlakke en lage bodem!?) Nu met tranen in ogen kijken naar beelden van onze kinderen die erbij mochten zijn en zelfs zich mochten vermaken met het fonteintje bij de persoonlijke Boeddha van His Holiness de 17e Karmapa (we hadden droge kleren bij ons...).

Many people have asked you about this, when you escape from Tibet in 1999, is it your own decision or you were affected by other people? Does it take a lot of time to make the decision or it’s a rush one?
It didn’t take too much time, only several months or a year. But when it was decided finally, seems like a very quick decision. Generally, it’s my own decision. No one dares to decide it for me.
Before you left Tibet, other three leaders of Tibetan Buddhism are all in India already, is it inevitable for you to leave and join them?
I think that’s two different things. It is not because they are there so I have to go too. It is because I am the spiritual leader of Kagyu lineage, I should take my responsibilities, fulfilling this inheritance course. I must take this from my gurus, while they were in India at that time and can’t come to Tibet. That’s one reason. And another is I’m worried when I grow up, the Chinese government will give me some political tasks and force me to say bad words about His Holiness Dalai Lama. They want me to say something on their half. I don’t think that’s right thing to do. Last but not the least reason is lots of foreigners come to see me since I was a little kid. So I always wish to go abroad and see the world. However, I’ve waited for so many years but can’t get the permission. Not only I’m not permitted to go abroad, I can’t even go everywhere in Tibet freely. There are lots of restrictions from the government. Everytime my friends come, they beg me to go to their countries. So I am determined to go.
There is a statement released from the official media of Chinese government. In this statement they say when you left Tibet, you left a letter, saying you leave to get the instrument back, it is not a betrayal to the countryman or a betrayal to the monastery.
Yes, I left a letter. Most of the contents are the same as they stated. But there is one more thing in that letter, after all these years can’t get the permission to go abroad, I decided to leave. I didn’t escape just for some instruments.
