Here are 10 unusual birth defects.
Human gestation is highly complex and in the 9 months of development many abnormalities can occur. Some are much less common than others.
Here are 10 unusual birth defects.
Number 10. Mermaid Syndrome. It may have a storybook name, but the condition, which causes the legs to be fused together, rarely has a fairy tale ending. Most often the affected newborn dies as kidneys and other vital organs don’t form properly either.
Number 9. Treacher Collins. This genetic disorder presents as a significant lack of facial bone structure. Those born with the syndrome are often, albeit insensitively, described as not having a face. Communication and food consumption can be greatly impacted as a result of the missing bone mass.
Number 8. Harlequin Ichthyosis. Babies born with this have patches of thick skin that has difficulties sealing, making them prone to infection. Medication and frequent bathing help with discomfort and boost the skin’s ability to grow and shed. It’s estimated there are about 100 cases existing in the world today.
Number 7. Congenital arhinia. The name refers to being born without a nose, and 1 in 100 million babies are affected with the facial anomaly. Fewer that 50 cases have been recorded in modern medical texts.
Number 6. Ambras Syndrome. The genetic condition, which causes thick patches hair to grow over the entire face and body, has only been documented about 50 times since the Middle Ages. The only danger it presents is the inevitable cruelty of others.
Number 5. Epidermolysis bullosa. Within this range of skin disorders is a particular variety in which babies are born without skin. The only known treatment is to keep the exposed areas covered as a means of staving off infections.
Number 4. Ectopia cordis. The defect, which is marked by the heart developing outside of the body, can sometimes occur when the chest cavity is too small to accommodate it. Thankfully, surgeons have had some success with creating the needed space and housing the entirety of the heart inside.
Number 3. Brittle Bone Disease. Baby bones are fragile as it is, but newborns suffering from this disorder sustain fractures much more easily. It occurs in 3 in 50 thousand births and only among those with a family history of the problem.
Number 2. Progeria. Causing rapid aging, the syndrome leads to the early develop of conditions associated with advanced years, such as osteoporosis. Sam Berns, the progeria sufferer who was featured in an HBO documentary about the disease, only lived to be 17 years old.
Number 1. Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva. This defect causes the muscle and tendon tissue to calcify and harden to a bone-like consistency. Its onset is slow, but often causes significant disability by the adult years. 1 of every 2 million people is born with it.

At a routine 20-week ultrasound, Layna Stafford and husband Matt found out there was a potential problem with their baby boy. She was sent to the MUSC Prenatal Wellness Center, where they delivered the devastating news that baby Jaxton had a fatal birth defect and would likely not live long after birth. Through it all, Layna describes the care and support she and her husband received from the team at MUSC. It gave them the courage to try again for another child- this time with a happy ending.

Donnie and Ronnie Galyon are the world’s oldest set of siamese twins at the age of 64 years old. They are conjoined from their sternum to the groin area. They have 2 sets of legs, 2 torsos, 2 heads, but only one set of male genitalia.
Number 8: Bubble Man
Chandra Wasna is a man who has a genetic disease that causes his entire body to be covered in small bubbles, or rather small noncancerous tumors. There is no place on his body that the tumors aren’t covering.
Number 7: Tree Man
Rising to #7 on the countdown is Tree Man. Dede Koswara is an Indonesian man who has an extremely rare fungus growing on his hands and feet. In 2008, Dede came to the U.S. to get 12 lbs of fungus cut off. Unfortunately, it returned, and he has to continue to have surgeries once the fungus starts impairing his mobility.
Number 6: Jose Mestre
A growth so large it masked his entire face. It was impossible to even tell he was human. Jose Mestre developed an extremely large and terrifying tumor over his entire face. He let it go for many years due to not having proper medical information. He finally received treatment after being flown from Portugal to Texas. The mass was removed and Jose lives a normal life.
Number 5: Turtle Boy
A child in Columbia had a mole so big in covered his entire back. It was so large that it looked like a turtle shell. The boy was shunned by neighbors who were scared of him as they were very superstitious. A surgeon heard of his plight and went to operate on the boy. Surgery was a success and the boy lives a normal life.
Number 4: Fish Boy
Minh Anh is a Vietnamese man who was born after his mother was exposed to Agent Orange. His skin is scaly and sloughs off. He appears to have the skin of a fish. Being in water helps him be more comfortable as there is no cure for his condition.
Number 3: Manar
Manar was born with one body and a parasitic twin, sticking out from her head. The head had one large mass but no limbs. The extra head could only blink and smile. Surgery to separate them was performed after Manar fell ill. The parasitic twin died immediately. Manar lived another year before she died.
Number 2: Rudy Santos and the Parasitic Twin
Rudy was born with a parasitic twin sticking out of his abdomen. Arms, legs, part of a head with an ear and hair. He was offered the chance to have it removed, however, he turned the surgeons down as he said he was ‘far too attached to it’.

Joseph Merrick is better known as ‘The Elephant Man’. Born in 1839 he had a disease that caused his limbs to enlarge and his head to grotesquely bulge out. When he went out he had to wear a sack over his head so that people wouldn’t scream. He lived the end of his life in a hospital where he entertained many visitors. He died after he tried to sleep like a normal person , suffocating himself.

A congenital disorder, or congenital disease, is a condition existing at birth and often before birth, or that develops during the first month of life (neonatal disease), regardless of causation. Congenital disorders vary widely in causation and abnormalities. Any substance that causes birth defects is known as a teratogen.

Surgery was a success and the boy lives a normal life. Number 4: Fish Boy Minh Anh is a Vietnamese man who was born after his mother was exposed to Agent Orange. His skin is scaly and sloughs off. He appears to have the skin of a fish. Being in water helps him be more comfortable as there is no cure for his condition. Number 3: Manar Manar was born with one body and a parasitic twin, sticking out from her head. The head had one large mass but no limbs. The extra head could only blink and smile. Surgery to separate them was performed after Manar fell ill. The parasitic twin died immediately. Manar lived another year before she died. Number 2: Rudy Santos and the Parasitic Twin Rudy was born with a parasitic twin sticking out of his abdomen. Arms, legs, part of a head with an ear and hair. Fatal Birth Defect- A Mom Shares Her Story - MUSC Health
At a routine 20-week ultrasound, Layna Stafford and husband Matt found out there was a potential problem with their baby boy. She was sent to the MUSC Prenatal Wellness Center, where they delivered the devastating news that baby Jaxton had a fatal birth defect and would likely not live long after birth. Medication and frequent bathing help with discomfort and boost the skin’s ability to grow and shed. It’s estimated there are about 100 cases existing in the world today.
Number 7. Congenital arhinia. The name refers to being born without a nose, and 1 in 100 million babies are affected with the facial anomaly. Fewer that 50 cases have been recorded in modern medical texts.
Number 6. Ambras Syndrome. The genetic condition, which causes thick patches hair to grow over the entire face and body, has only been documented about 50 times since the Middle Ages. The only danger it presents is the inevitable cruelty of others.
Number 5. Epidermolysis bullosa. Within this range of skin disorders is a particular variety in which babies are born without skin. The only known treatment is to keep the exposed areas covered as a means of staving off infections.
Number 4. Ectopia cordis. The defect, which is marked by the heart developing outside of the body, can sometimes occur when the chest cavity is too small to accommodate it. Thankfully, surgeons have had some success with creating the needed space and housing the entirety of the heart inside.
Number 3. Brittle Bone Disease. Baby bones are fragile as it is, but newborns suffering from this disorder sustain fractures much more easily. It occurs in 3 in 50 thousand births and only among those with a family history of the problem.
Number 2. Progeria. Causing rapid aging, the syndrome leads to the early develop of conditions associated with advanced years, such as osteoporosis. Sam Berns, the progeria sufferer who was featured in an HBO documentary about the disease, only lived to be 17 years old.

A growth so large it masked his entire face. It was impossible to even tell he was human. Jose Mestre developed an extremely large and terrifying tumor over his entire face. He let it go for many years due to not having proper medical information. He finally received treatment after being flown from Portugal to Texas. The mass was removed and Jose lives a normal life.
Number 5: Turtle Boy
A child in Columbia had a mole so big in covered his entire back. It was so large that it looked like a turtle shell. The boy was shunned by neighbors who were scared of him as they were very superstitious. A surgeon heard of his plight and went to operate on the boy. Surgery was a success and the boy lives a normal life.
Number 4: Fish Boy
Minh Anh is a Vietnamese man who was born after his mother was exposed to Agent Orange. His skin is scaly and sloughs off. He appears to have the skin of a fish. Being in water helps him be more comfortable as there is no cure for his condition.
Number 3: Manar
Manar was born with one body and a parasitic twin, sticking out from her head. The head had one large mass but no limbs. The extra head could only blink and smile. Surgery to separate them was performed after Manar fell ill. The parasitic twin died immediately. Manar lived another year before she died.
Number 2: Rudy Santos and the Parasitic Twin
Rudy was born with a parasitic twin sticking out of his abdomen. Arms, legs, part of a head with an ear and hair. He was offered the chance to have it removed, however, he turned the surgeons down as he said he was ‘far too attached to it’.

Birth defects are serious conditions that involve changes to the structure of one or more parts of the body. While the causes of many birth defects are still unknown, their importance and the impact on peoples’ lives are quite clear. Birth defects are common, occurring in 1 of every 33 babies born every year in the United States. Additionally, birth defects are a leading cause of pediatric hospitalizations and medical expenditures. CDC and its partners are working together to identify both genetic and environmental risk factors that may contribute to the development of birth defects. We have made great advances, but there is still much that can be done to understand and prevent birth defects. This session of Grand Rounds discussed some of the research underway to identify the risk factors for birth defects, and develop the key intervention strategies that can be used to help ensure that every child is born in the best possible health.
