We pondered of them all and the different ways in which to get there and eventually decided on The Isle of Skye and the Isle of Lewis and Harris. I admit I was quite nervous about driving on the opposite side from what I am used to and after being in Edinburgh for a month, I was extra nervous about city driving. We decided to take the bus to Inverness, a smaller city, and rent a car from there. I am glad we did because we just wouldn't have been able to explore the islands the way we did, with lot's of time, freedom and flexibility if we hadn't. I adjusted quite quickly after a couple of laps around the hotel parking lot and away we went. Reaching for the seatbelt on the wrong side or constantly wanting to rest the wrong arm while driving were the only adjustments I really had to make, there are constant reminders and the signs are clear so there was no trouble whatsoever. Furthermore, once you are on the islands, the roads for the most part, are single track and other cars are few and far between.
