A mental event is a particular occurrence of something going on in the mind or mind substitute that make up the conscious mind of an individual. It can be a thought, a dream, a feeling, a realization, or any other mental activity. Some believe that mental events are not limited to human thought but can be associated with animal and artificial intelligence as well. The issue of whether mental events are identical with complex physical events, or whether such an identity even makes sense, is central to the mind-body problem.
Mental events often occur because of physical events, however, physical events do not always occur because of mental events.
However, some see such a distinction as erroneous, and state that the mental and the physical are the very same property which cause any event(s).
Here we recapitulate some of the major ideas in Jaegwon Kim's "The Many Problems of Mental Causation", which details how the issues of so called mind/body, or mental/physical interactionism as bedeviled Descartes still vex contemporary discussions in philosophy of mind, albeit in an altered form. Kim notes three major ways in which the issue of mental causation asserts itself, namely, through the problems of mental anomolism, extrinsic mental properties, and, what he cites as perhaps the most crucial, the problem of causal exclusion. After reviewing these issues, we conclude with a brief coda with some personal speculation as to how a way out of this impasse might be found... This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The news media focuses on tragic and violent events involving people with mental illnesses and, as a result, the public has an exaggerated view of the relationship between mental illness and violence, as well as their own personal risk of being harmed by someone who has a mental illness. But what is the reality for people with mental illnesses who become involved with the criminal justice system? If this is both a public health and public safety concern, what role do we, the general public, have in promoting mental health and preventing or reducing crime? Crystal Dieleman is an occupational therapist and assistant professor at Dalhousie University. Her passion is mental health and criminal justice. ...
