An MH-60R helicopter lands on the flight deck of USS Antietam. Video by Seaman David Flewellyn The Sikorsky SH-60/MH-60 Seahawk (or Sea Hawk) is a twin turboshaft engine, multi-mission United States Navy helicopter based on the United States Army UH-60 Black Hawk and a member of the Sikorsky S-70 family. The most significant airframe modification is a hinged tail to reduce its footprint aboard ships. The U.S. Navy uses the H-60 airframe under the model designations SH-60B, SH-60F, HH-60H, MH-60R, and MH-60S. Able to deploy aboard any air-capable frigate, destroyer, cruiser, fast combat support ship, amphibious assault ship, or aircraft carrier, the Seahawk can handle anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), naval special warfare (NSW) insertion, search and rescue (SAR),...
The USS Antietam (CG-54), a Ticonderoga class Cruiser of the United States Navy (USN) at the Manila Harbor.
This video follows the film "Dad Enters the Navy." In this interview with Kirby Lee Davis, U.S. Navy veteran Dale Davis describes his job aboard the USS Antietam, CV-36, during its 1950-52 Korean War cruise in the Sea of Japan. As a storekeeper on the giant aircraft carrier, Dale provides insight on the ship's infrastructure and work routines. Other stories from this interview include the Navy's shore leave relations with the Japanese and how his curiosity over combat got him into danger (and on report).
U.S. Navy veteran Dale Davis shares more of his experiences sailing the Sea of Japan on the USS Antietam during the Korean War. These tales include the challenges of resupplying an aircraft carrier, how a coffee break got Davis in trouble with the executive officer, and his walking through a wall of rain on the Antietam's wooden deck. Interview and video by his younger son, Kirby Lee Davis, as part of a family history series.
What does a storekeeper on an aircraft carrier do after he finishes work for the day? Korean War veteran Dale Davis answers that question, and other lifestyle inquiries, in this third video about his career aboard the USS Antietam during its 1950-52 tour of the Sea of Japan. It's all part of the Davis Family History Series on YouTube by Kirby Lee Davis. This film captures an interview with Dale Davis in the fall of 2014. It was completed in March 2016. These tales of the Korean War started with the film "Dad Enters the Navy," and end with "Life After the Navy."
Huell Howser visits the USS Antietam (CG-54) in 1995. He visits the ship while it is in drydock and when it is underway. The Antietam fires its CWIS and 5 in gun. Sorry about the video quality, it's from a VHS tape from 1995.
A home movie of the USS Rainier (AOE-7) '99 Tiger Cruise - the second of seven parts. This segment describes an underway replenishment, featuring the USS Fitzgerald (DDG-62) with cameos from USS Antietam (CG-54), USS McClusky (FFG-41), USS Oldendorf (DD-972) and USS Princeton (CG-59).

Battle of Antietam, also called Battle of Sharpsburg, (September 17, 1862), a decisive engagement in the American Civil War (1861–65) that halted the Confederate advance on Maryland for the purpose of gaining military supplies. The advance was also regarded as one of the greatest Confederate threats to Washington, D.C. The battle took its name from Antietam Creek, which flows south from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to the Potomac River near Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Following the Union defeat at the Second Battle of Bull Run, Confederate General Robert E. Lee advanced into Maryland with some hope of capturing the Federal capital of Washington to the southeast. On September 17, 1862, his forces were met at Antietam by the reorganized Federal army under General George B. McClellan, who blo...
The Arleigh Burke class of guided-missile destroyers was designed as a gas turbine-powered replacement for the Coontz class missile destroyers and the Leahy- and Belknap- classes of missile cruisers. Originally intended to be a cheaper, less capable vessel than the Ticonderoga class cruiser, the design has evolved into an extremely capable general purpose warship, incorporating highly advanced weaponry and systems. Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) was the first alrge US Navy vessel designed to incorporate stealth shaping techniques to reduce radar cross-section. Originally tasked with defending against Soviet aircraft, missiles and submarines, this potent destroyer is now used in high-threat areas to conduct anti-air, anti-submarine, anti-surface, and strike operations. A new hull profile s...
