Shanghai, China. For those wanting to explore this wonderful city there is plenty to do ranging from traditional to extremely modern.

Shànghǎi) , with a population of more than 23 million (with over 9 million migrants), is the largest and most developed city in

Shanghai was the largest and most prosperous city in the
Far East already during the
1930's, and has remained the most developed city in mainland China
. In the past 20 years Shanghai has again become an attractive city for tourists from all over the world.
The world once again had its eyes on the city when it hosted the
2010 World Expo, recording the greatest number of visitors in the event's history. Shanghai is split in two by the
Huangpu River (
黄浦江 Huángpǔ Jiāng). The most basic division of the area is Puxi (浦西 Pǔxī)
West of the river, versus
Pudong (浦东 Pǔdōng),
East of the river. Both terms can be used in a general sense for everything on their side of the river, but are often used in a much narrower sense where Puxi is the older (since the
19th century) city center and Pudong the mass of new (since the
1980s) high-rise development across the river. Shanghai is a fascinating mix of
East and West. It has historic shikumen (
石库门) houses that blend the styles of
Chinese houses with
European design flair, and it has one of the richest collections of
Art Deco buildings in the world. As there were so many concessions (designated districts) to
Western powers during the turn of the
20th century, in many places the city has a cosmopolitan feel. There is everything from classic
Parisian style, to
Tudor style buildings that give an
English flair and
1930s buildings reminiscent of
New York or
Chicago.
There is a saying that goes, "Shanghai is heaven for the rich, hell for the poor,"
People from all over China flock to Shanghai — everyone from farmers seeking jobs in manual labour to university graduates seeking to start a career or wanting to live in a cool up-tempo city. Even well-off people, though, complain that buying a home is becoming impossible; prices have skyrocketed in the last few years: wikitravel.org/en/Shanghai
http://nomadicsamuel.com : The most dynamic city in the world's fastest- changing nation, Shanghai is an exhilarating, ever-morphing metropolis that isn't just living
China's dream, but is setting the pace for the rest of the world.
Once a playground for foreign adventurers and socialites, the one-time whore of the
Orient is now where home-grown tycoons build soaring monuments to capitalism and the locals party all night. But despite a past as evocative as it is notorious, Shanghai has dispensed with the rear-view mirror, pushed the pedal to the floor and is roaring towards its imagined future so fast that keeping up is almost impossible. New developments spring up weekly, while the rapidly growing middle classes work seven days a week in the hope of graduating to the big-time.
Shanghai is much more
Hong Kong than
Běijīng; there are no dusty imperial palaces here.
Instead, European-style cityscapes and tempting, tree-lined neighbourhoods rub shoulders with the sci-fi skyline of Pǔdōng. Shanghai was where China first met the West and it's still a frontier town, obsessed with the latest fads, fashions and technology.
But tucked between the shopping malls and the eye-popping modern architecture is the old Shanghai, where temples nestle down alleys, along with street markets and classical
Chinese gardens. Shanghai is a city of stunning contrasts, where visitors can go from sipping a cocktail in a designer bar overlooking the
Bund, to eating dumplings at a street stall, or gazing at a
10th-century Buddhist monastery, in the space of a few hours.
Summer is hot and humid, winter can get cold, but Shanghai never stops:
