The Matsu Islands (Chinese: 馬祖列島; pinyin: Mǎzǔ Lièdǎo; Fuzhou dialect: Mā-cū liĕk-dō̤ or less frequently, Chinese: 馬祖群島; pinyin: Mǎzǔ Qúndǎo; Fuzhou dialect: 馬祖島 Mā-cū-dō̤) are a minor archipelago of 36 islands and islets in the Taiwan Strait administered as Lienchiang County (連江縣; Lièng-gŏng-gâing pinyin: Liánjiāng Xiàn;) under streamlined Fujian Province of Taiwan. It is the smallest county in the country.
Only a small area of what is historically Lienchiang County is under the control of the Republic of China. The People's Republic of China (PRC) administers the part of the historical county on mainland China as Lianjiang County, which claims the entire archipelago to be its Mazu Township (馬祖鄉; Mā-cū-hiŏng). Kinmen is the other archipelago along the coast of Fujian that is controlled by the Republic of China (Taiwan).
The Matsu Islands are named for the goddess Matsu.
The Lienchiang name is derived from the original Lianjiang County of Fujian province in Mainland China. In April 2003, the county government started considering changing the name to Matsu County to avoid confusion with the county of the same name on the mainland. Some local people opposed the name change because they felt it reflected a Democratic Progressive Party Taiwan Independence viewpoint.

Mandarin/Nat Taiwan's Matsu islands are less than 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the area where China is staging its latest round of war games. Remaining residents and troops based there a bracing themselves - in case the exercises turn out to be a cover for an attack. Matsu's mainland island of Nan Kan lies close to the coast of mainland China. The island forms the anchor of the offshore defence line of Taiwan. Heavily fortified with a garrison of several thousand soldiers, the island is on alert for possible Chinese aggression. Soldiers are returning from leave to posts on the other outlying islands in the chain, but most of its residents are not taking a chance and are leaving. On the island of Hsichu, most of the 350 inhabitants have left for Taiwan. One o...

Department of Defense PIN 27002 STAFF FILM REPORT 66-45A
Mandarin/Nat Taiwan bans any direct commerce, communication, and transportation links with rival China since the two sides split amid civil war in 1949. But that has not stopped fishermen from the two sides trading. Taiwan's legislature passed a bill in early March to open up trade between Taiwanese outlying islands and Mainland China. But the largely symbolic piece of legislation does not automatically open up any part of the outlying islands to mainland ships and aircraft. The Taiwanese Cabinet believes that if direct links are permitted, they should be allowed for all of Taiwan, not just the outlying islands. But some officials believe the bill will create holes in the island's defences, and flood Taiwan with defence threats and disease from the outlying island. If ...

Taiwan is a bit different to China. In China old temples have been destroyed. Matsu is a deity revered in Taiwan. Fireworks are to scare away any bad spirits. The 'Buddah' is paraded through the back streets, and tourist night market, dragon dance is in front of Longshan Temple.

We Said Go Travel http://www.wesaidgotravel.com/ Lonely Planet Taiwan calls the Penghu Islands the "Hawaii of Taiwan." Might Penghu be like an old-time Hawaii? And as a place known for its fishing industry, Penghu seems like a destination far from the tourist trail, a place with a major Matsu festival and therefore a tantalizing prospect for exploration. http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Matsu, also known as Mazu, is dedicated to the Chinese goddess of the sea who is said to protect fishermen and sailors. This flamboyantly decorated Taoist temple is divided into three halls and two courtyards. Filled at all hours with people burning incense and joss sticks to the gods and trying to divine the future, the Lukang temple is one of the most important in Taiwan. There is even a Matsu pilgrimage yearly during which a statue of Matsu is carried 350 kilometers/217 miles around the island over an eight-day period! Can you just imagine that sight?
Matsu is smallest rural county in Taiwan. It’s closer to China than Taiwan. Based on the isolated location and limited resources, Matsu has focused towards developing an eco-tourism industry for the future. This will ensure that Matsu’s development maintains an appropriate balance between economic growth and environmental protection. Since 2012, bioluminescent algae has started blooming in Matsu. The bioluminescent algae has been named as Dinoflagellates. The blooming of Dinoflagellates causes the surface of the ocean to sparkle at night. This spectacle attracts thousands upon thousands of tourists and it is seen as a local cultural symbol. However, according to my research, we found that the main reason of the heightened bioluminescent algae activity is pollution from China and global w...

English/Nat China's military exercises near Taiwan's outlying islands are expected to intensify Thursday due to better weather conditions. This week inhabitants of the defensive frontline Matsu islands have been leaving for fear of possible attack but one resident refuses to go - an 80 year old nun from Belgium. On a clear day Mainland China is visible from the harbour of Nankan island. At their closest the Matsu group of islands lie only 4.5 kilometres from the Chinese coast. Since the beginning of the week China has been holding a series of exercises close to the islands. Locals from smaller less defended islets have moved to Taiwan after rumours that China might attack. But one long time resident is unbothered by the tension. Sister Madeleine Severens has been i...

Taiwanese people are people from Taiwan who share a common Taiwanese culture and speak Chinese or Aboriginal languages as a mother tongue, made out of two ethnic groups, Han Chinese, who make up 98% of the population, and Aboriginals, who make up the remaining 2%. Taiwanese people may also refer to individuals who either claim or are imputed cultural identity focused on Taiwan or areas under the control of the Government of the Republic of China since 1945, including Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu islands. At least three competing paradigms are used to identify someone as a Taiwanese person: nationalist criteria, self-identification criteria, and socio-cultural criteria. These standards are fluid, and result from evolving social and political issues. The complexity resulting from competing and ...
Kinmen or Quemoy is a small archipelago of several islands of Taiwan including Great Kinmen, Lesser Kinmen, and some islets. Administratively, it is Kinmen County of the streamlined Fujian Province, Taiwan. The county is also claimed by the People's Republic of China as part of its own Fujian Province's Quanzhou Prefecture. It is geographically very near Xiamen, no more than 2 kilometres. Some islands of other counties, such as Wuqiu, were transferred to the jurisdiction of Kinmen County by the ROC government following its defeat in the Chinese Civil War and retreat to Taiwan. Matsu is the other set of islands on the Fujian coast controlled by the Republic of China. This video is targeted to blind users.
