Thomson Reuters Corporation (/ˈrɔɪtərz/) is a major multinational mass media and information firm founded in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and based in New York City and Toronto. It was created by the Thomson Corporation's purchase of British-based Reuters Group on 17 April 2008, and today is majority owned by The Woodbridge Company, a holding company for the Thomson family. The company operates in more than 100 countries, and has more than 60,000 employees around the world. Thomson Reuters was ranked as Canada's "leading corporate brand" in the 2010 Interbrand Best Canadian Brands ranking. Thomson Reuters' operational headquarters are located at 3 Times Square, Manhattan, New York City; its legal domicile is 333 Bay Street, Suite 400, Toronto, Ontario.
The company was founded by Roy Thomson in 1934 in Ontario as the publisher of The Timmins Daily Press. In 1953 Thomson acquired the Scotsman newspaper and moved to Scotland the following year. He consolidated his media position in Scotland in 1957 when he won the franchise for Scottish Television. In 1959 he bought the Kemsley Group, a purchase that eventually gave him control of the Sunday Times. He separately acquired the Times in 1967. He moved into the airline business in 1965, when he acquired Britannia Airways and into oil and gas exploration in 1971 when he participated in a consortium to exploit reserves in the North Sea. In the 1970s, following the death of Lord Thomson, the company withdrew from national newspapers and broadcast media, selling the Times, the Sunday Times and Scottish Television and instead moved into publishing, buying Sweet & Maxwell in 1988. The company at this time was known as the International Thomson Organisation Ltd (ITOL).

Reuters /ˈrɔɪtərz/ is an international news agency headquartered in Canary Wharf, London, England, United Kingdom and a division of Thomson Reuters. Until 2008, the Reuters news agency formed part of an independent company, Reuters Group plc, which was also a provider of financial market data. Since the acquisition of Reuters Group by the Thomson Corporation in 2008, the Reuters news agency has been a part of Thomson Reuters, making up the media division. It transmits news in English, French, Arabic, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Urdu and Chinese.
The Reuter agency was established in 1851 by Paul Julius Reuter in Britain at the London Royal Exchange. Paul Reuter worked at a book-publishing firm in Berlin and was involved in distributing radical pamphlets at the beginning of the Revolutions in 1848. These publications brought much attention to Reuter. He later developed a prototype news service in 1849 in which he used electric telegraphy and carrier pigeons. The Reuter's Telegram Company was later launched. The company initially covered commercial news, serving banks, brokerage houses, and business firms.

The first story from our new series, SLUMSCAPES, focuses on the residents of Kibera, Nairobi who are battling the construction of a new highway that is slated to slice through their community - bulldozing 10 schools, thousands of homes, churches, clinics and graveyards. Kibera is one of Africa's oldest, largest slums, located just five kilometres from Nairobi city centre, and home to more than 170,000 people. The battle highlights the precarious situation faced by slum dwellers globally. Many have no legal rights to the land they have occupied for decades, thwarting their efforts to invest in essential services, like education, to improve their lives. In 1989, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, there were only 15 border walls around the world. Today, there are 70 of them. Ten years after the Secure Fence Act, which authorised the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to spend $1.2 billion for the construction of a 700-mile fence along the U.S.-Mexico border, we interviewed Reece Jones - author of “Border Walls: Security and the War on Terror in the United States, India, and Israel” - to try to understand why countries across the world are increasingly investing in such barriers. Jones, who is also a Professor of Geography at the University of Hawaii, has been studying border walls for the past 15 years - some well known, like the US / Mexico fence, and some not, like the wall between Russia and Norway. He reveals border disputes few ...

Stanley Greene worked in Jabal al-Zawiya in northwest Syria in March and in Aleppo in April. There he found a war that had pushed people almost beyond the limits of sanity. Civilians, including mothers and children, were forced into hiding, even inside tombs, hunting for scraps of food and targeted by snipers when they dared to emerge. Others fled the country, with more certain to follow, Greene said. Over 2 million Syrians have already sought refuge in neighbouring states. "The people are leaving. You are about to see mass exodus. All of these countries are about to be put to the test. Jordan which has had a relatively safe passage through the Arab Spring could get sucked in before it knows it. Look at Turkey's discontent (at) refugees spilling over. Lebanon… The scenarios are endless...

Hundreds of girls forced to work up to 14 hours a day in India's cigarette-rolling industry are looking to the future thanks to a new Plan programme to help them realise their rights. In the town of Kadiri in Andhra Pradesh alone, hundreds of families have relied on cigarette – or beedi – rolling for generations. Almost all of the workers are women and many are young girls. They must roll at least 1,000 beedis per day to earn a paltry sum of less than 2 US$. The beedi manufacturers, however, make billions of dollars.
