Santiago de Chile, a city of extremes, is surrounded by the world’s longest mountain range, driest desert, largest ocean and southernmost grassy plains. The cosmopolitan South American capital has the perfect mix of both historic and ultra-modern attractions.
The lively Plaza de Armas houses the divine Metropolitan Cathedral and the National History Museum. Santa Lucía Hill is the place where the city was founded by the Spanish in the 16th-century and the Chilean Museum of pre-Colombian Art shows what life was like here before colonial rule.
La Moneda Palace is the seat of government and the place of Augusto Pinochet’s 1973 military coup. The Museum of Memory and Human Rights documents the dictator’s repressive regime.
Santiago has many city parks. Parque Bicentenario is in Vitacura, while the sculptures of Parque de las Esculturas are in Providencia. Centrally located Parque Forestal, houses the Museum of Contemporary Art. Nearby is Centro Cultural Estación Mapocho, in a former train station.
Find colorful street art, craft shops and sidewalk cafés in Bellavista. From this neighborhood, you can access Cerro San Cristóbal to look back at Santiago one more time before exploring Chile’s many natural treasures.
Our trip to Chile wouldn't have been complete without a visit to the capital, so towards the end of our stay we decided to visit Santiago. We had 4 days to discover what the city was all about, so we set out to visit the main attractions, sample Chilean food (Comida Chilena), and explore various neighborhoods on foot. We may not have been able to see it all, but the following is our experience in the city. For anyone planning a similar trip, here's a look at 20 things to do in Santiago de Chile on your visit:

Santa Lucia is an urban park smack dab in the middle of Santiago and it’s a popular hangout in the afternoons and weekends. The hike is a pleasant one with lots to see, including fountains, spiralling staircases, defensive forts, sprawling gardens, and cool lookout points.
Lastarria is a neighbourhood located just east of Santa Lucia hill and it was once the bohemian hub of the city.Today it is very popular with tourists as it offers an outdoors flea market, an international mix of cafes and restaurants, & live music.
For panoramic views of the city, ride the funicular to the top of San Cristobal Hill.
Plaza de Armas is the heart of Santiago’s historic centre. There are lots of benches under the cover of palm trees, and the place is buzzing with activity. The Metropolitan Cathedral is located in the historic centre of Santiago overlooking the square. The construction you see today dates back to the year 1800, since previous cathedrals were destroyed in earthquakes.
Santiago’s Central Market is the place to come for the freshest food. You'll find rows of restaurants serving up everything from grilled fish to ceviche. We really like our ceviche, so we found a place serving exactly that.
Parque Forestal is a park that forms a long stretch of greenery along the Mapocho River. It’s a nice green escape in the middle of the city.
Palacio de la Moneda is the seat of the President of the Republic of Chile. This is where you can come to watch the changing of the guard. Just underneath Palacio de La Moneda, you’ll find Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda, which is a cultural centre featuring exhibitions, design shops, and a small selection of cafes.
Bellavista is a cultural hub with lots of theatres, cinemas, cafes, museums, and restaurants. The most famed home in the neighbourhood is La Chascona, the home of the famed Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.

Santiago De Chile, the capital of Chile, is dignified, modest and European-looking and also lively, modern and full of Latin temperament, a city that has many green areas and a history that covers five hundred years. The Plaza De Armas is the heart of the city and the historic centre of colonial Santiago that contains the city’s most important buildings. The Museo Histórico Nacional is located in the Palacio Real Audiencia. It contains around twelve thousand exhibits that feature Chile’s history from pre-Columbian times right up to the twentieth century. Strikingly dressed in black and white uniforms and brown caps, the soldiers of the guard march across the Plaza De La Constitution towards the La Moneda Palace, an elongated, strictly classical building whose white façade looks almost kitsch with the blue sky as its backdrop. Following restoration work, General Augusto Pinochet moved in and it has been the seat of government ever since. Dictatorship transformed into democracy! The Parque Forestal is situated on the northern edge of the city centre along the Rio Mapocho, a park complex with various varieties of tree. Amid all the green is the German Fountain with, at its centre, a ship with heroic figures and huge birds of prey. Today, the city is looking good and although with colonial roots, Santiago De Chile is now open-minded, modern and cosmopolitan.

Chile was given its name by the Incas who respectfully called it Chili, ‘the country in the south’. Santiago De Chile, the capital of Chile, is dignified, modest and European-looking and also lively, modern and full of Latin temperament. The city of Valparaiso or, Paradise Valley, is around a hundred and twenty kilometres from the capital of Santiago De Chile on the Pacific coast. The city’s development was closely connected with its harbour which brought it wealth and power. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, escalators have rattled up and down the steep hills of the harbour city with forty five hills flanking the bay, each of them covered with a number of tiny wooden huts. Only a short journey on a gravel road and the Atacama Desert begins. At its centre it is the driest desert in the world where the forces of nature have turned it into an extraordinary landscape. The Atacama extends between the Pacific Ocean and the Cordilleras, an area of stone and sand that is perforated only by various frequently dried out salt lakes. For those ships that sailed around Cape Horn, Ancud represented a safe harbour on the journey north in which they could rest after sailing the stormy waters of the South Pacific. At a time when whales and seals were hunted in the Antarctic, Ancud served as a supply station along the route to the southern Polar sea. From the Atacama Desert in the north to as far as the stormy Tierra Del Fuego in the south, Chile is a country rich in contrast. Volcanoes, arid deserts, salt lakes, lively geysers, sandstone mountains and a cosmopolitan city. All of this is to be found in Chile, a country at the end of the world!

Santiago
Santiago (/ˌsæntiˈɑːɡoʊ/; Spanish pronunciation: [sanˈtjaɣo]), also known as Santiago de Chile [sanˈtjaɣo ðe ˈtʃile], is the capital and largest city of Chile. It is also the center of its largest conurbation. Santiago is located in the country's central valley, at an elevation of 520 m (1,706 ft) above mean sea level.
Founded in 1541, Santiago has been the capital city of Chile since colonial times. The city has a downtown core of 19th century neoclassical architecture and winding side-streets, dotted by art deco, neo-gothic, and other styles. Santiago's cityscape is shaped by several stand-alone hills and the fast-flowing Mapocho River, lined by parks such as Parque Forestal. The Andes Mountains can be seen from most points in the city. These mountains contribute to a considerable smog problem, particularly during winter. The city outskirts are surrounded by vineyards and Santiago is within a few hours of both the mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
Santiago's steady economic growth over the past few decades has transformed it into a modern metropolis. The city is now home to a growing theater and restaurant scene, extensive suburban development, dozens of shopping centers, and a rising skyline, including the tallest building in Latin America, the Gran Torre Santiago. It includes several major universities, and has developed a modern transportation infrastructure, including a free flow toll-based, partly underground urban freeway system and the Metro de Santiago, South America's most extensive subway system. Santiago is the cultural, political and financial center of Chile and is home to the regional headquarters of many multinational corporations. The Chilean executive and judicial powers are located in Santiago, but Congress meets in nearby Valparaíso.

In addition to Jerusalem and Rome, Santiago De Compostela was the third most important Christian pilgrimage destination.Its beautiful main facade combines various decorative and architectural elements that are to be found along the pilgrims’ way, the Camino de Santiago. In addition to the imposing cathedral there are further treasures hidden within the historical centre of the town such as the 16th century Colegio De Fonseca. Unlike the architectural transformation of its external façade most of the cathedral’s interior has retained its original form. Lastarria is a neighbourhood located just east of Santa Lucia hill and it was once the bohemian hub of the city.Today it is very popular with tourists as it offers an outdoors flea market, an international mix of cafes and restaurants, & live music.
For panoramic views of the city, ride the funicular to the top of San Cristobal Hill.
Plaza de Armas is the heart of Santiago’s historic centre. There are lots of benches under the cover of palm trees, and the place is buzzing with activity. The Metropolitan Cathedral is located in the historic centre of Santiago overlooking the square. The construction you see today dates back to the year 1800, since previous cathedrals were destroyed in earthquakes.
Santiago’s Central Market is the place to come for the freshest food. You'll find rows of restaurants serving up everything from grilled fish to ceviche. We really like our ceviche, so we found a place serving exactly that.
Parque Forestal is a park that forms a long stretch of greenery along the Mapocho River. It’s a nice green escape in the middle of the city.
Palacio de la Moneda is the seat of the President of the Republic of Chile. This is where you can come to watch the changing of the guard. Just underneath Palacio de La Moneda, you’ll find Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda, which is a cultural centre featuring exhibitions, design shops, and a small selection of cafes.
Bellavista is a cultural hub with lots of theatres, cinemas, cafes, museums, and restaurants. The most famed home in the neighbourhood is La Chascona, the home of the famed Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.

The Museo Histórico Nacional is located in the Palacio Real Audiencia. It contains around twelve thousand exhibits that feature Chile’s history from pre-Columbian times right up to the twentieth century. Strikingly dressed in black and white uniforms and brown caps, the soldiers of the guard march across the Plaza De La Constitution towards the La Moneda Palace, an elongated, strictly classical building whose white façade looks almost kitsch with the blue sky as its backdrop. Following restoration work, General Augusto Pinochet moved in and it has been the seat of government ever since. Dictatorship transformed into democracy! The Parque Forestal is situated on the northern edge of the city centre along the Rio Mapocho, a park complex with various varieties of tree. Amid all the green is the German Fountain with, at its centre, a ship with heroic figures and huge birds of prey. Today, the city is looking good and although with colonial roots, Santiago De Chile is now open-minded, modern and cosmopolitan.

Santiago De Chile, the capital of Chile, is dignified, modest and European-looking and also lively, modern and full of Latin temperament. The Plaza De Armas is the heart of the city and the historic centre of colonial Santiago that contains the city’s most important buildings. The city of Valparaiso or, Paradise Valley, is around a hundred and twenty kilometres from the capital of Santiago De Chile on the Pacific coast. The city’s development was closely connected with its harbour which brought it wealth and power. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, escalators have rattled up and down the steep hills of the harbour city with forty five hills flanking the bay, each of them covered with a number of tiny wooden huts. Only a short journey on a gravel road and the Atacama Desert begins. At its centre it is the driest desert in the world where the forces of nature have turned it into an extraordinary landscape. The Atacama extends between the Pacific Ocean and the Cordilleras, an area of stone and sand that is perforated only by various frequently dried out salt lakes. For those ships that sailed around Cape Horn, Ancud represented a safe harbour on the journey north in which they could rest after sailing the stormy waters of the South Pacific. At a time when whales and seals were hunted in the Antarctic, Ancud served as a supply station along the route to the southern Polar sea. From the Atacama Desert in the north to as far as the stormy Tierra Del Fuego in the south, Chile is a country rich in contrast. Volcanoes, arid deserts, salt lakes, lively geysers, sandstone mountains and a cosmopolitan city. All of this is to be found in Chile, a country at the end of the world!
