Kamasi (Persian: كماسي, also Romanized as Kamāsī; also known as Kafāsī) is a village in Estarabad-e Shomali Rural District, Baharan District, Gorgan County, Golestan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 1,825, in 416 families.
The human voice consists of sound made by a human being using the vocal folds for talking, singing, laughing, crying, screaming etc. The human voice is specifically a part of human sound production in which the vocal folds (vocal cords) are the primary sound source. Generally speaking, the mechanism for generating the human voice can be subdivided into three parts; the lungs, the vocal folds within the larynx, and the articulators. The lung (the pump) must produce adequate airflow and air pressure to vibrate vocal folds (this air pressure is the fuel of the voice). The vocal folds (vocal cords) are a vibrating valve that chops up the airflow from the lungs into audible pulses that form the laryngeal sound source. The muscles of the larynx adjust the length and tension of the vocal folds to ‘fine-tune’ pitch and tone. The articulators (the parts of the vocal tract above the larynx consisting of tongue, palate, cheek, lips, etc.) articulate and filter the sound emanating from the larynx and to some degree can interact with the laryngeal airflow to strengthen it or weaken it as a sound source.

Saxophonist and composer Kamasi Washington, 34, has been working on releasing his now three-CD, nearly three-hour, choir-and-strings-assisted album The Epic for the better part of five years now. Even longer, if you consider how long his 10-piece working band has known each other: Most of its members, known collectively as The Next Step or The West Coast Get Down, have known each other since at least high school decades ago in South Central Los Angeles, and in some instances well before that. Even as their diverse careers have made it difficult to focus exclusively on this band — Washington is, for instance, the saxophone player heard on the new Flying Lotus and Kendrick Lamar albums — they've all continually committed to experimenting with a brand of jazz that resonates with their own gen...

October 09, 2015 by PATRICK JARENWATTANANON Artists don't usually tell long, rambling stories at the Tiny Desk, and if they do, those stories don't usually make the final cut. But this one felt different. It was about the time Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, a young black man, says he was stopped by New Orleans police late at night for no reason other than to harass and intimidate him. And how his pride almost made him do something ill-advised about it. And how he finally channeled that pent-up frustration into a piece of music whose long-form title is "Ku Klux Police Department." "K.K.P.D." was the emotional peak of the septet's performance, though it wasn't a new tune. That's notable, because Scott stopped by the Tiny Desk on the very day his new album came out. It was played by somethi...

Saxophonist and composer Kamasi Washington, 35, has been working on releasing his now three-CD, nearly three-hour, choir-and-strings-assisted album The Epic for the better part of five years now.

His latest record The Epic (released on Brainfeeder) is a 3 hour dreamscape journey through the mind of a master craftsman. The Los Angeles jazz scene seemingly revolves around a large group of friends who’ve been playing music together since childhood (when I asked Kamasi how long he’d known Thundercat his response was “Since he was in his mom’s belly"). A few minutes with LA jazz artist Kamasi Washington. Educated in LA public schools, Kamasi is one to watch.
Terrace Martin has been around for a minute. Though it was his work on Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly—which he helped to shape by helming the contributions of a wide array of collaborators, including his childhood friends Kamasi Washington and Thundercat—that served as his introduction to music fans beyond the realm of modern jazz, he's been a steady, indispensable presence at studios in and around L.A. In addition to his brilliant solo work, he also put in years working with Snoop Dogg. When Martin stopped by The FADER's offices recently, he gave us a peak into the studio habits of both Kendrick (quiet and spongelike) and Snoop (focused and weed-heavy), and how their core sensibilities were learned directly from Dr. Dre. "We all are students of Dr. Dre," he said. "We're like cousin...
