Puttanna Kanagal

Puttanna Kanagal (born Shubraveshti Ramaswamiah Seetharama Sharma, 1 December 1933 – 5 June 1985), was an Indian filmmaker and is considered as one of Kannada's cinema's greatest filmmakers. He was born in Kanagal, a village in the erstwhile Kingdom of Mysore into a poor Madhwa Brahmin family. Starting his career as a publicity boy, Kanagal was drawn into independent filmmaking after a stint in theatre and working with film director and producer B. R. Panthulu as his assistant. Kanagal's assiatants include Tamil directors SP. Muthuraman and P. Bharathiraja, and T. S. Nagabharana.

Although a majority of Kanagal's films were on offbeat or taboo subjects, generally women-centric, he endeared himself to both the critics and ordinary film goers alike making "bridge films" between art and commercial cinema. His first film in Kannada, Gejje Pooje, based on a novel of the same name by M. K. Indira is considered a landmark film. He would go on to direct other films such as Kappu Bilupu (1969), Sharapanjara (1971), Naagarahaavu (1972), Edakallu Guddada Mele (1973), Shubhamangala (1975) and Ranganayaki (1981), all of which are seen as milestones in Kannada cinema. He also directed a handful of films in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi languages.

Vijaya Bhaskar

Vijaya Bhaskar (Kannada: ವಿಜಯಭಾಸ್ಕರ್; 1924–2002) was an Indian music director and composer who composed music for several mainstream and experimental feature films in Kannada film industry. Scoring music for over 600 feature films, Bhaskar worked in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, Tulu and Konkani language films as well. He was a part of all of popular Kannada film director KSL Swamy's (Ravi) movies and was also known for his association with acclaimed director Puttanna Kanagal.

Influenced by R C Boral and Mukul Mehta, Bhaskar developed his own style of music and introduced the concept of theme music in Kannada film industry. He is credited for inspiring producers to select popular works of Kannada poets through his music. He was awarded with the Dr. Rajkumar Award and the prestigious Sur Singar Award from Mumbai music lovers (for his classical score in Malaya Marutha Kannada movie, directed by Ravi). He was also a recipient of Karnataka State Film Award for Best Music Director six times.

Vijaya Narasimha

Vijaya Narasimha (Kannada: ವಿಜಯ ನರಸಿಂಹ) (1927 – 31 October 2001) was an Indian lyricist who worked in Kannada cinema.

Career

Vijaya Narasimha first wrote the song "Ee Dehadinda Dooranaade" for the 1956 film Ohileshwara. He was part of the magic trio of director S. R. Puttanna Kanagal and music director Vijaya Bhaskar, which came up with matchless songs. be it bharata bhushira mandira sundari (upasane), panchama veda premada nada (Gejje Pooje), sandesha megha sandesha (sharapanjara) or preethine aa dyavru tanda aasthi namma baalvege (doorada betta) his words stuck to the mind as much for the cadence as for their meaning. who can forget the enchanting viraha! of yedakallu guddadamele picturised on actress Jayanthi.

The first song that he wrote for Kannada filmdom was ee dehadinda dooravaade yeke atmave (o soul, why did you depart from the body) for the rajkumar-starrer ohileshwara in the late 1950s.

He worked with every major singer and music director through the 60s, 70s and 80s and with every major actor, including a couple of Kannada films with Tamil superstar rajnikanth. His last film was the Rajkumar-starrer Odahuttidavaru. He was always writing, though his eyesight was bad, it was a passion with him. According to his family, even three days before his death, he was writing devotional songs on lord rama for a cassette. Other than nearly 4,000 film songs, vijaya narasimha wrote three novels Badukina Bairagi, Srimanchakrayana and Sanjegempu and also Puttanna Kanagal's biography and lyrics for countless devotional cassettes. His cassette bhadrapada shuklada chauti sold a record number of copies 30 years ago. He also holds the unique distinction of writing Kannada song for a Tamil movie in M.G. Ramachandran's Tamil classic Nadodi Mannan(1958).

Kannada

Kannada /ˈkɑːnədə, ˈkæ-/ (ಕನ್ನಡ kannaḍa, IPA: [ˈkʌnːəɖɑː]) or Canarese/Kanarese /kænəˈriːz/, is a Dravidian language spoken predominantly by Kannada people in South India, mainly in the state of Karnataka, and by linguistic minorities in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala, and Goa. The language has roughly 40 million native speakers who are called Kannadigas (Kannaḍigaru), and a total of 50.8 million speakers according to a 2001 census. It is one of the scheduled languages of India and the official and administrative language of the state of Karnataka.

The Kannada language is written using the Kannada script, which evolved from the 5th-century Kadamba script. Kannada is attested epigraphically for about one and a half millennia, and literary Old Kannada flourished in the 6th-century Ganga dynasty and during the 9th-century Rashtrakuta Dynasty. Kannada has an unbroken literary history of over a thousand years.

Based on the recommendations of the Committee of Linguistic Experts, appointed by the Ministry of Culture, the Government of India designated Kannada a classical language of India. In July 2011, a center for the study of classical Kannada was established as part of the Central Institute of Indian Languages at Mysore to facilitate research related to the language.
