Corte (Italian pronunciation: [ˈkorte],Corsican Corti) is a commune in the Haute-Corse department of France on the island of Corsica. It is the fourth-largest commune in Corsica (after Ajaccio, Bastia, and Porto-Vecchio).
Corte is a subprefecture of the Haute-Corse department.
Corte was the capital of the Corsican independent state during the period of Pasquale Paoli.
During the 1914-18 War, German prisoners of War were kept in the Citadel.
Sites of interest include the Fortress (A citadella), the Museum of Corsica (Museu di a Corsica), and the University of Corsica (Università di Corsica).
National roads lead to Ajaccio and Bastia.
Corte is also linked to Ajaccio, Bastia and Calvi by the Chemin de fer de la Corse (Corsican Railway).
Corte has become a major University town in Corsica since the Pasquale Paoli University opened up again in 1980s.
Corte was the birthplace of Joseph Bonaparte (1768–1844), the eldest brother of the French Emperor Napoleon I, who made him King of Naples (1806–1808) and Spain (1808–1813).
Gaspar Corte-Real (c. 1450 – c. 1501?) was a Portuguese explorer.
He was the youngest of three sons of João Vaz Corte-Real, also a Portuguese explorer, and had accompanied his father on his expeditions to North America.[citation needed] In 1500, King Manuel I of Portugal sent Gaspar to discover lands and search for a Northwest Passage to Asia.
He reached Greenland, believing it to be east Asia, but chose not to land. He set out on a second voyage to Greenland in 1501, with his brother Miguel Corte-Real[citation needed] and three caravels. Encountering frozen sea, they changed course to the south and reached land, believed to be Labrador and Newfoundland. There they captured about sixty native men, who would later be sold as slaves. Gaspar then sent his brother and two ships back to Portugal before continuing southwards. Nothing more was ever heard of Gaspar Corte-Real. His brother Miguel attempted to find him in 1502, but he too never returned.
