Clonfert Meelick Pride of Place Winners 2009.wmv
This is a pictorial video of the Parishes of Meelick and Clonfert in South East Galway. Meelick and Clonfert were entered in the 2009 Pride of Place competition by Galway County Council and sucessfully won the overall all Ireland prize for their population. The Pride of Place Competition recognises and celebrates the vital contributions that community partnerships make to society. The focus is on people coming together to shape, change and enjoy all that is good about their local area. It differs from other similar projects in that they specifically recognise the involvement of the local community in all aspects of rural and urban regeneration including, promoting social cohesion, involvement in planning, the promotion of heritage and environmental awareness.
The Pride of Place competition springs from Co-operation Ireland's work with Local Authorities on a cross-border basis through the Local Authority All Island Steering Forum. This forum established a wide range of projects. One of these projects was the Pride of Place Initiative. This initiative expertly guided by Chairman, Tom Dowling grew from strength to strength and has proved to be a run away success in terms of interest and participation from local community groups and their respective Local Authorities. We could safely now say that this is a flagship initiative of the forum.

Eddie Stones Medugorje 2008
Music Carmel Horan Up to 1000 people regularly attend monthly ceremonies Clonfert, while Eddie himself carries his work across Ireland, England and Scotland. He focuses strongly on "the Sacrament of Reconciliation" (formerly Confession). He considers Clonfert "part of the renewal of the Church in Ireland, with lay people and priests working together."
While acknowledging that people are attracted by reports of healing, Eddie argues that "God uses that to bring them back to him, whether they get physically healed or not. After all," he reasons, "what is the point of being healed of cancer if you end up dying in your sins?" He wants "to encourage people who have fallen away from their faith to come back to the Lord and to once again live godly lives."

"If it is one night you say
I am to sleep with Liadán
any layman who spent it would see
that the night was not wasted
If it is one night you say
I am to sleep with Liadán
though we spent a year together
we would still have something to commemorate"

Alison Brown - The Wonderful Sea Voyage of Holy St.Berndan (Merlefest 2011) -HD
Saint Brendan of Clonfert or Bréanainn of Clonfert was chiefly renowned for his legendary quest to the "Isle of the Blessed," also called Saint Brendan's Island. Many versions exist that tell of how he set out onto the Atlantic Ocean with sixty pilgrims (other versions have fourteen, plus three unbelievers who join at the last minute) searching for the Garden of Eden. One of these companions is said to have been Saint Malo, the namesake of Saint-Malo. If it happened, this would have occurred sometime between 512-530 AD, before his travel to the island of Great Britain. As the legend of the seven years voyage spread, crowds of pilgrims and students flocked to Ardfert. Religious houses were formed at Gallerus, Kilmalchedor, Brandon Hill, and the Blasket Islands, in order to meet the wants of those who came for spiritual guidance from Saint Brendan. Saint Brendan is the Patron Saint of sailors and travelers. At the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, a large stained glass window commemorates Brendan's achievements. At Fenit Harbour, Tralee, a substantial bronze sculpture with a small horn has been erected to honor the memory of Brendan. While the story is often assumed to be a religious allegory, there has been considerable discussion as to whether the legends are based on actual events, including speculation that the Isle of the Blessed was actually North America. There is a St Brendan Society that celebrates the belief that Brendan was the first European to reach North America. Tim Severin has demonstrated that it is possible that a leather-clad boat such as the one described in the Navigator could have reached North America.
