A potent and potentially lethal form of heroin may be about to hit the world market.
It's apparently being produced in jungle factories in Burma and is already making a mark in villages across the border in Thailand.
Scores of Thai addicts are said to have collapsed after taking it - and unconfirmed reports say some have died.
In a hill tribe village, near Mae Chan, in Northern Thailand, an ethnic Akha woman prepares a two U-S dollar fix of heroin.
In these remote parts it's such a common sight no-one appears to give it a second glance.
34-year-old Jeler's habit has already given her AIDS.
Now it could pose a new danger.
The heroin in her syringe is said to be up to twice the usual strength.
Called "999" it's low quality and is possibly cut with amphetamine.
Since it reappeared in these Northern Thai villages three months ago it's caused havoc.
When 26-year-old Somsak shot up a syringe, he collapsed instantly.
Only the prompt action of a friend saved him.

"I injected this heroin but it's stronger than usual, and I got a shock and died. My friend
injected me twice with sugar water solution until I revived, but I still felt very stoned."

Now the threat's poised to go worldwide.
These hills and jungles are part of the infamous Golden Triangle of Thailand, Burma and
Laos.
From here comes an estimated 60 per cent of America's heroin.
A major dealer in this village said he was looking overseas for his money.
He's thought to have connections in Europe and the U-S.
He said it was bad quality, and that everyone he'd sold it to here had collapsed.
The reappearance of 999 is said to stem directly from the surrender of drug overlord Khun Sa to the Burmese authorities, in January.
Backed by his Mong Tai Army he was one of the world's biggest exporters of high quality heroin.
But, it's claimed, those who have filled his shoes lack his production skills, so they've
reverted to rougher methods.
Those trying to reduce the drug problem among the hill tribes have watched the reappearance of 999 with alarm.
Ayei (Pron: I-Yee) is involved in weaning users onto the substitute drug, methadone.
He says there's now a widespread fear among them.

In the 9th century, the Bamar people entered the upper Irrawaddy valley and, following the establishment of the Pagan Kingdom in the 1050s, the Burmese language, culture and Theravada Buddhism slowly became dominant in the country. The Pagan Kingdom fell due to the Mongol invasions and several warring states emerged. In the 16th century, reunified by the Taungoo Dynasty, the country was for a brief period the largest empire in the history of Southeast Asia. The early 19th century Konbaung Dynasty ruled over an area that included modern Myanmar and briefly controlled Manipur and Assam as well. The British conquered Myanmar after three Anglo-Burmese Wars in the 19th century and the country became a British colony. Myanmar became an independent nation in 1948, initially as a democratic nation and then, following a coup d'état in 1962, a military dictatorship. While the military dictatorship formally ended in 2011, most of the party leaders are former military officers.

Now the threat's poised to go worldwide.
These hills and jungles are part of the infamous Golden Triangle of Thailand, Burma and
Laos.
From here comes an estimated 60 per cent of America's heroin.
A major dealer in this village said he was looking overseas for his money.
He's thought to have connections in Europe and the U-S.
He said it was bad quality, and that everyone he'd sold it to here had collapsed.
The reappearance of 999 is said to stem directly from the surrender of drug overlord Khun Sa to the Burmese authorities, in January.
Backed by his Mong Tai Army he was one of the world's biggest exporters of high quality heroin.
But, it's claimed, those who have filled his shoes lack his production skills, so they've
reverted to rougher methods.
Those trying to reduce the drug problem among the hill tribes have watched the reappearance of 999 with alarm.
Ayei (Pron: I-Yee) is involved in weaning users onto the substitute drug, methadone.
He says there's now a widespread fear among them.

"Even the sellers are frightened. People say that after using this heroin for two months
they feel dreadful - far worse than before - and they're afraid it'll kill them. The poor have to use it because it's all they can afford."

Dr Jennifer Gray, who runs the Australian-funded methadone project, is worried about the claims of amphetamine content, and the effect on users more used to high-grade heroin.

Simply Bagan
Bagan is a place like no other in the world. I've been here twice and both times, I was captivated by it and surprised by all the details I missed the last time. Over 2,200 abandoned pagodas spread out over the orange-yellowish landscape that is the plain of Bagan. Biking is my preferred mode of transportation which allowed me access to some very remote temples with ease. Not to mention, this place is probably one of the most beautiful place in the world to watch a sunrise. Updated: Made the video a little more concise and the music a little bit more interesting and not repetitive. Take a deep breath and go on a journey around South East Asia through leech-infested jungles, abandoned temples, and colorful coral reefs. Myanmar aka Burma! A beautiful tropical country with stunning Pagoda's to see and wonderful people to meet. Myanmar sits between Bangladesh, China and Thailand....
Myanmar aka Burma! A beautiful tropical country with stunning Pagoda's to see and wonderful people to meet. Myanmar sits between Bangladesh, China and Thailand.
Myanmar only recently opened up to tourism 2012 and is a hidden gem. If you are thinking about your next place to visit, I highly recommend checking out this incredible country. However, keep in mind that even though it's a rather hot and humid climate, you need to try to keep your shoulders and knees covered out of respect for the more conservative culture.
Here are my top 5 tips for visiting Myanmar!
1) Don't drink the water! It's still a developing country and the water can cause unpleasant digestive issues for a foreigner. Even at hotels, do not drink any water that does not come from a sealed water bottle. You'll thank me later...
2) They accept two forms of currency: Myanmar Kyat & USD. However, the acceptance of the USD comes with a catch… It has to be the most pristine, unflawed cash you've ever seen. Even a small spot or tear on the bill they may turn away (even if it's $20). I recommend having some Kyat just in case you end up some place that will not accept USD regardless of how new the bills are.
3) It's an all cash economy. DO NOT depend on finding another ATM outside of a city center to get more cash out at a later time. You may end up having to take a taxi an hour and a half to the nearest town to find another ATM. In addition, you won't be able to get Myanmar Kyat out of Myanmar, most likely due to the fact that the country recently opened to tourism. Do not expect to exchange your left over Kyat for any other currency in another country. Exchange it in Myanmar, otherwise it's literally just a paper souvenir!
4) Always have your BFF with you: Toilet paper! You don't' have to take an entire roll, but have some kleenex with you if you want to be able to wipe your behind, because it will most likely not be provided.
5) The country is still developing and there are not very many tourists at the moment. Personally I see this as a good thing because it felt like visiting an authentic place with friendly people. Everyone was overjoyed to see me and happy to help. There is a lot of trash and garbage around as well as people living in shacks trying to survive. However the country working hard on developing roads and the people themselves work very hard to make better lives for themselves.
BONUS TIP! I kind of mention this in the beginning of the video but I do want to point it out again: It's hot and humid as well as conservative so keep that in mind. Be respectful and modify your habits to fit that environment and culture. 90% of the people follow Buddhism and you will see a lot of shrines and Buddhist temples and most people cover their bodies out of modesty. You will not be allowed into see these temples if you are not properly covered. Keep that in mind when packing!
And…elephants are amazing!!! So go check out Myanmar. Go to the gorgeous beach, ride some beautiful elephants and see fantastic temples.

Myanmar only recently opened up to tourism 2012 and is a hidden gem. If you are thinking about your next place to visit, I highly recommend checking out this incredible country. However, keep in mind that even though it's a rather hot and humid climate, you need to try to keep your shoulders and knees covered out of respect for the more conservative culture.
Here are my top 5 tips for visiting Myanmar!

Bagan is a place like no other in the world. I've been here twice and both times, I was captivated by it and surprised by all the details I missed the last time. Over 2,200 abandoned pagodas spread out over the orange-yellowish landscape that is the plain of Bagan. Biking is my preferred mode of transportation which allowed me access to some very remote temples with ease. Not to mention, this place is probably one of the most beautiful place in the world to watch a sunrise. See in the video for yourself. :)
In this particular video, I experimented on many new techniques I learned over the past few days from motion tracking to speed ramping and sound design. Possibly the longest I've spent doing a video to date. I hope I did not overuse the speed ramping technique since I think it fits in well with the flow of the story, the building emotion and the music.
Hope you enjoy the video! Try watching it with a good pair of headphones. :)

Updated: Made the video a little more concise and the music a little bit more interesting and not repetitive.
Take a deep breath and go on a journey around South East Asia through leech-infested jungles, abandoned temples, and colorful coral reefs. It was a 2 months trip that gone by so fast, like taking one deep breath.
This is no ordinary "inspiring" travel video. For this, I decided to go with a much more fun and action-packed style instead of the usual go-to "inspirational" travel style that I like to do.. and a delicious "disco" music. Everything is better with disco music. :) I also experimented on many ways of shooting and framing and I think most of the footages came out really well.
I spent 2 months traveling around Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia with a few different friends and with such a diverse culture in the region, I was able to accumulate so many material like I never had before. With such a variety of different types of transportation, landscape, people, and food, I was surprise that I could squeeze so much of the material into a 5:30 minutes video shown here.
All in all, I think this is one of my best work yet and I have the most fun creating the video as well. I hope you enjoy it!

WHY A TOUR IN ASIA?
Attracted both by the beauty of Asia, we left our jobs to realise our dream: launch an online travel guide, while traveling six months through Asia. We already much traveled the world but we chose finally this continent because we always have lived strong and memorable experiences there. We defined our route following the dry seasons of each country. Eh yes! We studied tourism management and we are therefore very rigorous in the organization of a trip. This project gave a real goal to this trip: to discover even more, even further, limitless. After a few months, we found ourselves completely free of any prior, completely off the beaten tracks and we become true adventurers. And it is there, you really feel the joy, the pride of all the emotions experienced. It's crazy, such a an adventure!

Passionate about cultural discoveries, the World cuisine, meeting people, travel has changed our lives. Before starting our trip, we lived in a kind of routine without really knowing how thousands of people were living in a very different continent of ours. Today we are coming back bringing with us different vision, awesome pictures in mind and above all a new approach to life. To be happy, we don't need so much: just a backpack to ... go on an adventure and discover magical places which still enrich our life today. Then, we must always remember this trip and remember that even though this is not always easy, we go completely outside of your small comfort zone, we learn a lot about who we really are : a couple passionate about the treasures that surround us, about the cultural differences, about unknown flavors; yes you totally understood: about TRAVEL. RANGOON: Today, even after fifty years of neglect, with many decaying edifices, broken footpaths, and whirring generators to combat frequent power failures, the...
RANGOON: Today, even after fifty years of neglect, with many decaying edifices, broken footpaths, and whirring generators to combat frequent power failures, there’s no mistaking the remaining strong British influences, mixed with sidewalk vendors and food stalls at every turn.
PAGODAS: In Yangon, we visit the Schwedagon Pagoda to watch the sun set and to see the sixty tons of glistening pure gold covering the ‘bell’ of the main stupa change colour. And then in Mandalay, It’s not too much of a burden sitting on the top deck of ‘The Road to Mandalay’ cruiser in the open-air, taking of the breakfast buffet, and looking out over the river to the pagodas atop 37 hilltops.
MARKETS: At 3,000 feet In Nyaungshwe, the jetty-town for Inle Lake, where it is so much cooler than sweltering Yangon, we experience the one-in-five day local markets, where the colourfully dressed local hill tribes come to buy and sell their vegetables, flowers, bamboo and tobacco. In other places, it’s the workshops that appeal and difficult to get Pam and Juanita away from the jewellery and lacquer ware.
INLE LAKE: Inle Lake is famous for its unique leg rowers, conical fishing, and lotus fibre weaving. We observe all these and so much more as we come and go, travelling 85 kilometres sitting on cushions in wooden armchairs in our longboat over three days. The first day turns out to be long, but totally engrossing. We go up a river to a little-visited complex of old pagodas on top of the hill; it’s only when I can barely lift my nip of scotch before dinner that night that I realise how exhausting! But wonderful!
INDEIN Greenery grows out from ornate stucco carvings of spirits and legendary animals. Heads have been taken from most of the Buddhas inside. A little further on, our guide leads us away from the columns lining the covered stairway and along a dirt pathway up the hillside. He wants us to walk among and appreciate the hundreds of weatherworn stupas from the 17th and 18th centuries.
MANDALAY I’ve always carried an image of people walking over a long bridge seemingly on tall stilts above the water as stereotypical of Burma. I’m about to be surprised. THE "ROAD TO MANDALAY": There’s a lot to be said for seeing the countryside from the comfort of a cruise vessel. The ‘Road to Mandalay’ of Orient Express is no exception of course. We use the vessel as our hotel and base at both ends. We are totally spoiled in upgraded ‘state rooms’ with large picture windows allowing us not to miss a moment of life along the banks or the many different craft passing us along the mighty Irrawaddy.
BAGAN: Up before dawn, we drive over dusty roads in an rickety old wooden bus that’s been built on the chassis of an old World War II Chevrolet Jeep to watch the sun rise over the pagodas, aloft in a hot-air balloon. I can still hear the whoosh and lick of flame as the British pilot turns on the burners. We float for nearly an hour taking in the surreal landscape and at times coming low enough to look inside a ruin and see a statue of Buddha.

RANGOON: Today, even after fifty years of neglect, with many decaying edifices, broken footpaths, and whirring generators to combat frequent power failures, there’s no mistaking the remaining strong British influences, mixed with sidewalk vendors and food stalls at every turn.
PAGODAS: In Yangon, we visit the Schwedagon Pagoda to watch the sun set and to see the sixty tons of glistening pure gold covering the ‘bell’ of the main stupa change colour. And then in Mandalay, It’s not too much of a burden sitting on the top deck of ‘The Road to Mandalay’ cruiser in the open-air, taking of the breakfast buffet, and looking out over the river to the pagodas atop 37 hilltops.
MARKETS: At 3,000 feet In Nyaungshwe, the jetty-town for Inle Lake, where it is so much cooler than sweltering Yangon, we experience the one-in-five day local markets, where the colourfully dressed local hill tribes come to buy and sell their vegetables, flowers, bamboo and tobacco. In other places, it’s the workshops that appeal and difficult to get Pam and Juanita away from the jewellery and lacquer ware.
INLE LAKE: Inle Lake is famous for its unique leg rowers, conical fishing, and lotus fibre weaving. We observe all these and so much more as we come and go, travelling 85 kilometres sitting on cushions in wooden armchairs in our longboat over three days. The first day turns out to be long, but totally engrossing. We go up a river to a little-visited complex of old pagodas on top of the hill; it’s only when I can barely lift my nip of scotch before dinner that night that I realise how exhausting! But wonderful!
INDEIN Greenery grows out from ornate stucco carvings of spirits and legendary animals. Heads have been taken from most of the Buddhas inside. A little further on, our guide leads us away from the columns lining the covered stairway and along a dirt pathway up the hillside. He wants us to walk among and appreciate the hundreds of weatherworn stupas from the 17th and 18th centuries.
MANDALAY I’ve always carried an image of people walking over a long bridge seemingly on tall stilts above the water as stereotypical of Burma. I’m about to be surprised. Justin and I managed to squeeze in several hikes during our week-long stay in Nepal in December of 2015.
Despite the winter season being in full swing (and we are folks from a tropical country who never experience this kind of weather back at home!) we still spent majority of our time outdoors.
The Nagarkot Panoramic Hike (2 hours) took us in and out of villages surrounding Nagarkot, a 2000 MASL hilltown 1-1/2 hours away from Kathmandu. As the activity suggests, the hike was a leisurely walk along the Nagarkot ridge with open views of the Langtang Range, Manaslu, Dorje Lhakpa and the Central Nepal / Himalayan Range. We got info on this hike from Kyarol Dhoju of Peaceful Cottage and Cafe du mont, who also helped secure our hike guide. Temperature lowest at 1º.
A day after, we headed westward by bus to Pokhara where we started our 2-day hike that concluded in Australian Camp, Dhampus. The first day was a 5-hour hike. We spent 1 night in a teahouse. The second day was a more relaxed 3-hour downhill walk back to Naudanda. The Annapurnas could be seen from camp, or from anywhere during the hike for that matter. This 2-day hike is, as we later on learned, the trailhead to Annapurna Base Camp. We got info and everything we needed for this hike from the helpful staff of Himalayan Deurali Resort where we spent 1 night prior the 2-day hike. Temperature in camp: High 7º, low 0º.
Before you go: I would note that in light of an ongoing fuel crisis, transportation costs continue to go up, food choices are slim due to lack of cooking gas, and a country-wide electricity load balancing is in effect leaving everyone out of power 99% of the time we were there. That meant for a tourist: no power in your hostel, no hot shower, hard to bargain. You would be lucky if your hostel had a generator. We saw fewer tourists in the Kathmandu capital than in Pokhara. Hikers and trekkers were still aplenty.
Despite all this, the Nepalis that I returned to and the ones that we met were still the same warm, soft-spoken, passionate people that I knew. They are going through a lot. Tourism WILL help them.
