Provence (Provençal) wine comes from the French wine-producing region of Provence in southeast France. The Romans called the area provincia nostra ("our province"), giving the region its name. Just south of the Alps, it was the first Roman province outside Italy.
Wine has been made in this region for at least 2,600 years, ever since the ancient Greeks founded the city of Marseille in 600 BC. Throughout the region's history, viticulture and winemaking have been influenced by the cultures that have been present in Provence, which include the Ancient Greeks, Romans, Gauls, Catalans and Savoyards. These diverse groups introduced a large variety of grapes to the region, including grape varieties of Greek and Roman origin as well as Spanish, Italian and traditional French wine grapes.
Today the region is known predominantly for its rosé wine, though wine critics such as Tom Stevenson believe that region's best wines are the spicy, full-flavoured red wines. Rosé wine currently accounts for more than half of the production of Provençal wine, with red wine accounting for about a third of the region's production. White wine is also produced in small quantities throughout the region with the Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) region of Cassis specializing in white wine production. The Côtes de Provence is the largest AOC followed by the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence. The Bandol region near Toulon is one of the more internationally recognized Provençal wine regions.
Provence (French pronunciation: [pʁɔ.vɑ̃s]; Provençal: Provença in classical norm or Prouvènço in Mistralian norm, pronounced [pʀuˈvɛⁿsɔ]) is a geographical region and historical province of southeastern France, which extends from the left bank of the lower Rhône River on the west to the Italian border on the east, and is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea on the south. It largely corresponds with the modern administrative région of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, and includes the départements of Var, Bouches-du-Rhône, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and parts of Alpes-Maritimes and Vaucluse. The largest city of the region is Marseille.
The Romans made the region into the first Roman province beyond the Alps and called it Provincia Romana, which evolved into the present name. It was ruled by the Counts of Provence from their capital in Aix-en-Provence until 1481, when it became a province of the Kings of France. While it has been part of France for more than five hundred years, it still retains a distinct cultural and linguistic identity, particularly in the interior of the region.
La Perle (en. The Pearl) (ru. «Жемчужина» or «Прелестная жемчужина»; Zhemchuzhina or Prelestnaya Zhemchuzhina) (en. Pearl or Pretty Pearl) is a ballet-divertissement in one act, with libretto and choreography by Marius Petipa and music by Riccardo Drigo.
La Perle was created by Marius Petipa—the renowned Premier maître de ballet of the St. Petersburg Imperial Theatres—and the composer Riccardo Drigo—principal conductor of ballet and Italian opera performances for the St. Petersburg Imperial Theatres and director of music to the Imperial Ballet—as a lavish piece d'occasion for the gala given at the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow in celebration of the coronation of Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Fydorovna. The ballet was first presented after a performance of scenes from Mikhail Glinka's opera A Life for the Tsar on 29 May [O.S. 17 May] 1896. The cast for the premiere of La Perle at the coronation gala of 1896 featured the highest ranking dancers of both the Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg and of the Ballet of the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow.
Wine (from Latin vinum) is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grapes or other fruits. Due to a natural chemical balance, grapes ferment without the addition of sugars, acids, enzymes, water, or other nutrients.Yeast consumes the sugar in the grapes and converts it to ethanol and carbon dioxide. Different varieties of grapes and strains of yeasts produce different styles of wine. These variations result from the complex interactions between the biochemical development of the grape, the reactions involved in fermentation, the terroir (the special characteristics imparted by geography, geology, climate and plant genetics) and subsequent appellation (the legally defined and protected geographical indication used to identify where the grapes for a wine were grown), along with human intervention in the overall process.
Wine has been produced for thousands of years. The earliest evidence of wine to date was found in the country of Georgia, where 8000-year old wine jars were uncovered. Traces of wine have also been found in Iran with 7,000-year-old wine jars and in Armenia with the 6100-year old Areni-1 winery, which is considered to be the earliest known winery by far. The earliest form of grape-based fermented drink however, was found in northern China, where archaeologists discovered 9000-year old pottery jars. Wine had reached the Balkans by c. 4500 BC and was consumed and celebrated in ancient Greece, Thrace and Rome. Throughout history, wine has been consumed for its intoxicating effects, which are evident at normal serving sizes.
French cuisine consists of cooking traditions and practices from France.
Guillaume Tirel, a court chef known as "Taillevent", wrote Le Viandier, one of the earliest recipe collections of medieval France. During that time, French cuisine was heavily influenced by Italian cuisine. In the 17th century, chefs François Pierre La Varenne and Marie-Antoine Carême spearheaded movements that shifted French cooking away from its foreign influences and developed France's own indigenous style. Cheese and wine are a major part of the cuisine, playing different roles regionally and nationally, with many variations and appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) (regulated appellation) laws.
French cuisine was codified in the 20th century by Auguste Escoffier to become the modern haute cuisine; Escoffier, however, left out much of the local culinary character to be found in the regions of France and was considered difficult to execute by home cooks. Gastro-tourism and the Guide Michelin helped to acquaint people with the rich bourgeois and peasant cuisine of the French countryside starting in the 20th century. Gascon cuisine has also had great influence over the cuisine in the southwest of France. Many dishes that were once regional have proliferated in variations across the country.
Vinoa's first box was dedicated to the region of lavenders, a handful of Roman monuments and some very beautiful vineyards. Yes, September's box was all about Provence wine. The warm climates of the region are recognised for producing fruity full bodied roses. In fact, Provence is the largest producer of pink wine in France, but this does not mean that the reds and whites of the region should go unnoticed. We toured through the South of France by tasting one white; Cassis Blanc, one rose; Coteaux Varois and two reds; Bandol and Le Vallon. Each wine was selected for their ability to express the region and its signature for enjoying the best that the world has to offer, as much through the vivid landscape as the menu of Provencal tastes. Though our boxes are small, the carry huge chances for...
From Marseille to St. Tropez, this is a hot and sunny region, regularly swept by a strong wind where many grape varietals coexist: Cinsault, Mourvedre, Grenache, Syrah and Tibouren for the reds and rosés; Rolle, Clairette, Ugni Blanc and Semillon for the whites. Above all else, Provence is known for its rosé wines, tasted on the Mediterranean coast in the summer and representing almost 90% of their production. But are certain appellations such as Bandol, where we find great red wines, capable of aging... Understanding Provence wines in Bandol with Chateau Pibarnon Mourvèdre is THE grape of Bandol, like a macho Latino in a silk dress blowing kisses. In southern France, as elsewhere, the 'terroir' does the work as the vintner relaxes with a glass of rosé in hand. But this romanti...

Consumption of rosé wines from Provence continues to grow as high-quality producers are embracing the US market. Cyn talks with François Millo, director of Provence Wine Council, and Aurélien Pont, winemaker of Château Pigoudet, about rosés that are good food-pairing wines, like Clos Cibonne's Tibouren.

The nicest time of the year to visit the region "Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur" in South France is most likely end of May / June when the lavender fields blossom and the whole region seems to shine resplendent in purple. It was always a dream of mine to go there during this period and capture these amazing pictures you can see on so many posters. Well, if the trip is your Babymoon and the baby is suppose to come the last week of May -- then end of May / June isn't really an option, is it? :) So my wife and I hit the road down to South France in the last days of March 2013 and as you can see even during this time it's beautiful and definitely a journey worth! Anyway, pictures speak louder than words, so I stop here and you can just press "play": Join us on our trip and enjoy the clip! =)...
